The Algarve / West Algarve region
The Algarve has changed a lot in the past 15 years, and is now a lot more built up. There are some advantages - everything works better (no water or electic outages any more), good roads - and some disadvantages - more people. However Lagos is at the Western end of the Algarve, and so is a lot less touristy than Albufeira and Vilamoura.
Its location nearer the Atlantic means it is also slightly less overpowering heat-wise than the Eastern Algarve - however it is very hot in June, July and August, as well as nice and warm in Spring and Autumn. Over winter, you get warm days, but nights are cooler (and frankly with luck there will be a bit more rain this year too!).
Going further West from Lagos, the area becomes even less touristy, until you get to the Atlantic coast proper, which is now a designated nature reserve and so free of development completely - lovely!
The Algarve is well known for its golf courses and also for the many attractive fishing villages - and hence, of course, for the seafood, which is delicious - but fortunately not the only thing on the menu if you have a family with mixed views about fish (like ours!) We have a great selection of good restaurants to recommend.
The local people are very friendly and welcoming to Brits, and children are welcome everywhere (we gave up trying to get them into bed before about midnight after the first couple of days!) People generally speak excellent English, but actually it is worth learning just a bit of Portuguese (we can recommend an excellent six week CD course) because you will get a lot more out of being able to understand and communicate a little.
Lagos / Marina area
Lagos is a historic town, and the narrow streets and city walls are well worth exploring - lots of shops and stalls, and a small museum (Cat with two heads a great hit with our kids!). Also definitely worth taking a small boat from just outside the fort to visit the "grottos" - caves and coves hewn out of the limestone cliffs. The many intriguing shapes in the limestone are fascinating, beautiful and in many cases amusing, if you've a good imagination.
About 30 minutes away is Cape St Vincent - the Land's End of Europe which is very spectacular and further round the coast the wilder Atlantic beaches of Carapateira and Amado - a must for surfers (can fill you in on all the surfing details).
Also a must is a visit to sample the delicious local speciality Chicken Piri Piri (chilli chicken) at a mountain top restaurant above the town of Monchique which in the Autumn and Spring especially has amazing views over about 15 miles of countryside to the sea.
If you want a bit of action, you can learn to wind and kite surf, go diving or hire a Hoby Cat and there's plenty of sea fishing and dolphin watching trips available. Lagos is also a perfect base for blending the needs of the family with split golf loyalties!
Not sure about nightlife - we're not into that much - prefer nice meals out with conversation and company.

The rates are based on 2 people for the week. If you have a larger party (up to six in total) there is an additional cost per adult or per child.
If you have any specific requests or requirements, don't hesitate to let us know, we're very happy to do anything we can to help make your holiday relaxing, memorable and above all hassle free.
Conditions
Not ideal for small children - not being part of a complex and not having a private pool - but this makes it quieter, and an ideal base for older couples, families or groups of friends wanting to explore the area. for example, some friends - an older couple - spent a great three weeks exploring the area, our family have had lovely holidays there with our children 13, 11 and 7 and recently a party of six golfers stayed for 10 days.
