Enquire nowThe Algarve / West Algarve region
The Algarve, the most southerly region of Portugal, has the best of Portugal's climate. Cooling sea breezes make peak summer season here not too oppressive, although temperatures can climb up to 39 degrees centigrade in August. Average daily minimum temperatures on the Algarve can range from 8 to 10 degrees centigrade. Many suggest that the best time to visit the Algarve is between May and June when temperatures are up around 24 to 30 degrees centigrade - not oppressively hot, although that's hot enough. Expect very hot temperatures in July and August on the Algarve when they tend to push into the mid to high 30s centigrade.
Don't assume that the Algarve has day in day out sunshine out of peak season - it doesn't, it does get the rain too, mostly from November to April. Not much rain though, on average per year only around 50 days and a total of 500mm. Summers are hot and dry, whilst winters are mild. Cooling sea breezes ease the heat in peak summer, and sunshine hours are long. Sea water temperatures range from around 14 degrees centigrade in January to around 22 degrees centigrade in peak August. Good news for surfing and watersports fanatics then! The eastern more sheltered Algarve coast around the Faro, Tavira and Montegordo beaches have the best of warm sea water temperatures, and superb sheltered calm waters perfect for family holidays on the Algarve.
The Lagos / Porto de Mos area
Praia Porto do Mos - Is a long wide sandy beach backed by high cliffs with stunning views. The beach shelves gently into the sea and you can play in the crashing surf. There are sun loungers and sun shades available to rent.
The beach bars “Campimar” and “O Antonios” serve snacks and drinks all day plus a full lunch and dinner menu is available with fish dishes being a speciality. There is ample parking at Praia Porto do Mos, also a life guard is in attendance during the busy summer months. There is a bus service (no 13) available from the town centre.
The cliffs at Porto do Mos are a great place to walk in a natural surrounding, where many picturesque surprises awaiting you. If the tide is out, you can watch the fisherman combing the rocks in search of something (not sure exactly what)! These cliffs provide a natural path that can take you all the way to Praia da Luz, if you are really in for a long day's walk. A few minutes in the car and you are in the centre of the historic town of Lagos with its cobbled sidewalks and colourful market square, offering a larger variety of restaurants, bars, cafés, shopping and markets.
Modern Day Lagos - Essentially now an important tourist town there are still many architectural signs of its ancient past, even a building dating originally back to around 1445 which is recorded as being Europe’s first building used as a slave market.
The town’s more recently constructed Marina presents a lovely picture and this harbour is practically the first sight a visitor has of Lagos. Besides the boats that find it convenient as a permanent mooring it is usually full of yachts passing on the way or returning from the Mediterranean and the Americas. At the entrance to the harbour is the "Forte da Bandeira" which was constructed in the 17th Century.
Near the centre of town the municipal council has constructed a reasonably modern Cultural Centre in which various exhibitions and culturally related events are held during the year. In the Marina visitors will find different boat tours, yacht hire, and deep sea-fishing outings that can be booked.
Other Nearby Locations – well worth a visit - To the west of Lagos the once upon a time fishing village of Praia da Luz is now devoted to the quieter side of the tourist trade and is the home of many residents from the colder northern climates. Further to the west is another small fishermen's beach village of Burgau. Moving even further west is the coastal village of Salema. Here will be found some small Roman ruins proving the existence of its past importance.
The furthest west town is Vila do Bispo and is a very small administrative town for the Sagres area, the later being the most south-westerly corner of Europe! This area is a must for every visitor to the Algarve as it presents a very impressive and dramatic sight of towering sheer cliffs being beaten by the weight of the vast Atlantic Ocean. It is from here that Prince Henry sat and planned the several epic voyages of discovery that enlarged the known world of that time.
To the north of Lagos on the road to Lisbon is the small town country town of Aljezur with some fine nearby west coast beaches. Originally a hamlet, the Moors constructed a castle in the 10th Century whose ruin still stands today overlooking this town.

We had a phenomenal stay at this apartment. The place was essentially brand new. You are right within walking distance of a beautiful beach, have a stocked grocery store (Intermarche) nearby, and the town provides a lot of activities if you ask around. All in all, a great stay definitely worth the trip! |

My partner and I, my daughter and her boyfriend stayed in Sylvester and Carol's apartment in Lagos last week - it was the perfect setting, being within easy walking distance to a beautiful beach with two lovely restaurants offering superb cuisine and only a short taxi ride away to the centre of Lagos with so many lovely little streets filled with shops and bars to suit every age group... The apartment itself had all mod cons, everything you would need to make your holiday perfect... Sylvester and Carol are the perfect hosts - nothing is too much trouble for them and they went out of their way to arrange for us to get to the supermarket on arrival and also helped us with travel arrangements from and to the airport and to the Zoo Marine which is a "must do"... We will definitely be returning...!!!Thank you Sylvester and Carol - your apartment and your team are a credit to you both... Response: I am really glad you all had a great time in my apartment we do our best to make sure all our liens who have saved hard for their summer break have the best time with us.We always go the extra mile. Thanks once again for your booking. |
