About the home

Spacious private villa (quinta) in the Costa Vicentina National Park - a serene location in a traditionally Portuguese valley of almonds, figs, olives, carobs and cork oaks, yet only 2 kms from the pretty fishing village of Burgau, with its cobbled streets and beautiful beach - the perfect place to unwind or to use as a base to explore the Western Algarve.

Set in beautiful landscaped gardens with many unusual plants, including some superb palms.

We have children and have ensured that the property is family orientated with many indoor and outdoor games, including space for playing ball and a private pool.

A two hectare 'wilderness' area with meandering paths, tyre swings and a climbing rope has been created for older children to explore, make dens or play hide & seek.

The property is close to spectacular beaches and many attractions including; local bars / restaurants and amenities. To discover the neighbouring towns of Lagos, Luz and Silves a car would be beneficial.

An extensive information pack will be available at the villa, Quinta dos Almarjoes, reflecting our 45 year knowledge of the area, allowing you to experience more to your holiday than most tourists.

Facilities

Further details indoors:
The sitting/dining room is extremely spacious (7m x 9m) with wooden floors and a woodburner. Wide French windows open out onto a terrace and gardens.
Satellite TV with UK channels, DVD, I-Pod Docking Station, CD player, English books, toys and games are available.

A very well appointed kitchen with oven, dishwasher, microwave, and a fridge/freezer. It has been fully furnished with enough plates, glasses and cutlery to entertain 12 people. Coolbags and picnic equipment are also available.

There is a separate laundry area, housing a washing machine and clothes horse. A small courtyard for drying clothes is situated conveniently outside the kitchen door, next to the laundry area.

Bedroom 1 is large with a kingsize bed and fitted wardrobes.
Bedroom 2 is spacious with a single bed, bunk beds and fitted wardrobes.
Bedroom 3 has twin beds and its own French windows leading to the terrace & gardens.
All bedrooms have wooden floors.

Large bathroom with a full size bath, WC, bidet and a separate shower.

Prices include gas, electricity, clean linen and towels. Winter rates include logs for the wood burner. A Property Manager is available during your stay. The villa will be cleaned at the end of each week, with towels changed midweek.

Further details outdoors:
Beautiful gardens surround the terraces, which have been restored by a professional garden designer. Paths wind through palm trees and tropical plants to secluded seating areas where one can hide away with a good book.

There is a private pool, approx 30 m2 and 1.10 metres deep [ a child of around 8 can stand easily, but the pool is still deep enough to swim and play], that is surrounded by wooden decking and is securely fenced with a chained gate within full view of the main terraces. A shaded terrace offers a cool area for younger children to play or for parents to keep a mindfull eye on the pool.

For al fresco eating there is a BBQ near the pool and close to the covered seating area. Terraces are featured on the north, east and south sides, with shaded areas and outdoor furniture including tables, chairs and sunloungers.

The large lawned area has been created especially for ball games and there are five hectares of woodland and fields surrounding the property. We have cut out paths through some of this area to create a shady area for older children to play and explore.

CHILDREN ARE VERY WELCOME - If the children have a great holiday, then so do the parents - The property has many toys, DVDs, football goals, boules, badminton set, children story CDs and books aimed at a wide range of ages. We have created the gardens with children in mind so there is plenty of space to kick a ball or play badminton.

The villa has no steps within it and the main terraces are spacious and level. The entrance to the villa has steps down to the terrace, although a ramp is available if required. The gardens have been created with ramps instead of steps although the paths are gravel based.

Please check availability by telephoning or emailing. We require a 40% deposit (within 7 days of booking), after which we will acknowledge and reserve your dates. The balance of the rental (60%) will be due 4 weeks prior to your departure date and at this point we will send you detailed directions and any additional information.

Cancellations: Where possible we will try to re-let the property and if successful a full refund will be given.

We appreciate that cheaper air fares are available midweek, so we try to be as flexible as possible. Check-in time is after 3.00 pm, with check-out time by 10.30 am.

The Algarve / West Algarve region

The Western Algarve enjoys wonderful hot summers and sunny warm springs and autumns. It is rich in Iberian and Moorish influences and hasn't lost the Portuguese traditions that make it an unique holiday on the south west tip of Europe.

Beautiful unspoilt beaches, traditional villages with a simple slow way of life

The Algarve, Portugal with its endless beaches, impeccable golf courses and wonderful climate is the perfect holiday destination. Rich in history, the quaint and the luxurious side by side, the natural beauty, great food and warm welcome charm all visitors.

The Lagos / Burgau area

The villa is situated in a protected Nature Reserve and therefore is secluded and unspoilt, with no development permitted in the viscinity. During the spring, walks around the property are outstanding, as this part of the Algarve becomes a botanist's dream.

Our extensive knowledge can assist in researching specific interests. My parents wrote numerous books and articles on birdwatching, wildlife, arts and crafts and the cultural traditions of Portugal and Spain.

The choices of beaches is endless - all beautiful, but all different - from the family friendly beaches at Burgau, Luz, Salema and Lagos to the Internationally acclaimed wild beaches of the West Coast which are a surfer's paradise, awe inspiring and invariably almost deserted even in high summer.

Local villages and towns:

Burgau is a small and picturesque fishing village with narrow streets tumbling down to a slipway lined with colourful fishing boats. This bay is flanked by spectacular cliffs and offers a family friendly beach, restaurants and shops. A 3 minute drive or an easy 30 minute walk from the villa.

The beautiful and lively village of Luz offers water sports and a wide beach

The attractive, historic city of Lagos with its Marina and walled town and dramatic beaches offers large shops, cafes and night life.

Sagres, the most south westerley point in Europe, is a 20 minute drive west.

Inland there are many traditional villages barely touched by tourism with the central cafe and a way of life unchanged by progress.

Sports available locally include horse riding, water sports, tennis, scuba-diving, archery, deep-sea fishing, jeep safaris, gyms, boat trips and spectacular walks both inland and along coastal paths. Water Parks and Zoomarine are approximately a 40 minute drive, with Lagos Zoo only 15 minutes away.

During the summer months there are many events occuring throughout the Algarve. One that we can highly recommend is FIESA International Sand Sculpture Festival at Pera.

The Burgau Sports Centre has tennis courts, squash courts, a swimming pool which is heated during winter months and also offers children's activities.

John Aldridge Soccer School in Luz provides courses 3 mornings per week during the holidays for children between 6 and 15.

The Algarve is renowned for its top golf courses and there are 4 courses within close proximity:

Parque da Floresta is a 5 minute drive away and is a 18 Holes Par [SSS] 72 [72] It is a spectacular, although hilly course, designed by Pepe Gancedo and can be challenging for beginners as it has been carved out of the hilly landscape.

Boavista is a 10 minute drive away and is a 18 Holes Par[SSS] 71 [71]. It was designed recently by Howard Swan and is integrated into the natural terrain overlooking Lagos and Monchique mountains.

Palmares is a 15 minute drive and is an 18 holes Par[SSS] 71 [72] and combines links-style golf on the first nine holes with a slightly more hilly second nine. It has breathtaking scenery and is renowned for its annual Almond Blossom tournament week in February.

Penina is a 20 minute drive away and has an 18 hole Chamionship course Par[SSS] 73 [73], a 9 hole resort Par 35 and a 9 hole Academy course Par 30. It was laid out by Sir Henry Cotton.

Overall though there are 31 Golf Courses along the Algarve and more details can be given.

A new Autodrome has recently opened, around a 15 minute drive away, between the towns of Lagos and Portimao. It is considered to be the most advanced in the world and the top racing teams are using it for testing purposes prior to the Formula 1 season. It is hoped it will become part of the Formula 1 circuit by 2014. At present it holds International Superbike championships and other racing car events.
There is also an International Go-Kart circuit where the general public can hire Go-Karts. If you are interested in motorsports check out their agenda for the forthcoming season on www.autodromodoalgarve.com.

“Fantastic villa for those with young children. Near lovely sheltered and quiet beach!” We stayed here at the end of June with another family and had a lovely time. The beach at Burgau is the best for miles around as is really quiet and unspoilt with fairly easy parking and a beach bar. The villa is in lovely rural location and the gardens are great for the children to explore. There aren't any steps and a secure gated pool so really relaxing for parents of toddlers. The villa is also really well stocked.
