About the home

A stylish and comfortable terraced property, with air conditioning, set in a small, countryside condominium called Vale da Ribeira ('VDR'). VDR sits in approximately 75 acres of farmland between hills and valleys so the view from the terrace across open countryside and down to the Alvor Estuary is simply stunning. The house is privately owned by a family who take pride in offering a home from home experience to guests with luxury furnishings and fully fitted kitchen and bathroom facilities. Set into the side of a little hill the property's front door is at first floor level leading to a large sitting room, kitchen, utility room and cloakroom with loo and sink. Accessed from the sitting room through glass doors are two roof terraces with dining furniture and fabulous views. Downstairs are two bedrooms, both with en suites and French doors out to small private patios which, in turn, lead out onto the communal gardens. All windows and external doors have lockable shutters. Parking to the front of the property is off street and at first floor (entrance) level. Free WIFI is available to all guests staying in the property. An extra put up bed is available to hire

Within a short minute's stroll is a large communal pool. A little waterfall runs down into a children's paddling pool area making VDR perfect for families. At the highest point of the village is a pergola with seating - a perfect place to relax and soak up the views of the surrounding countryside. Extensive, landscaped gardens offer plenty of space to relax and many guests comment on how easy it is to slip into their holiday in such peaceful surroundings.

The Algarve / West Algarve region

The Lagos / Odiaxere area

Magnified with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, Vale da Ribeira is a very beautiful and peaceful village. Completed in 2007 it has been a huge success with holidaymakers, many of whom return year on year.

While the village is conveniently located near the EN125 road, properties are set well back on elevated grounds, allowing residents and guests to enjoy peace and quiet among olive, orange and almond trees as well as other local flora. This is a year round destination – winter sun, excellent walking and bird watching, spring flowers in abundance, summer beaches and warm sunshine. The fantastically beautiful coastline and glorious hills inland are all within easy driving distance.

Traveling to Vale da Ribeira:

Faro Airport is about 45 minutes and Odiaxere, the nearest village, is 4kms (just under 5 minutes in the car). The village is at the end of a long drive which leads only to Vale da Ribeira so is perfect if you’re looking for a nice peaceful, relaxing holiday off the beaten track.

Beaches:

The beaches in the Western Algarve are among the most beautiful and least crowded in Europe. There are lots of sheltered coves along the South Coast and Vale da Ribeira is very close to the famous Meia Praia beach which is the longest in the area stretching from Lagos up to the Alvor Estuary. Most beaches are easy to park at, some (for example Luz and Burgau) tend to be a little more popular and only a short walk is involved. Nearly all have some form of beach bar or restaurant. Get the map out and explore – there is so much to see and sometimes you might come across a beach that you share with only a few people.

Shopping & Eating Out:

The nearby village of Odiaxere (pronounced ‘Odiash’) has at least 3 ‘mini Mercados’ so there’s no need to go to the big supermarket in Lagos. One shop is on the main EN125 and the other 2 shops are in the square and streets to the right (north) of the main road. There are more supermarkets in Lagos and Portimao. Lagos has a whole range of restaurants and reportedly has a good night life. You’ll find the main banks, pharmacies and touristy shops here but it is well worth a visit. There is a restaurant, which has always been known to be reasonably priced, within a few minutes drive or a slightly longer walk if you fancy it! It is called the Casseiro and is about 1km from Vale da Ribeira towards Arao. In Odiaxere itself there are at least 3 restaurants on the main road – Cacto (can be a little pricey), Bon Gusto and Pizza Café (which has a take away service). There is another pizza restaurant on the EN125 toward Portimao, about 3-4 kms from Vale da Ribeira in a large garden centre. Meia Praia, the nearest beach, has a beach side restaurant (Gaviota Branca) and quite a few people enjoy breakfast there. Finally, Palmares Golf Club (there are many signs around for the course) has a restaurant/snack bar with fantastic views along the coast and it is open to non golfers.

Golf:

Golfers are ideally placed as some of the best courses in the Algarve are within a short drive including Penina, Palmares, Boa Vista and Parque do Floresta.

Within 10 minutes is Algarve's famous Motorpark (Autodromo International Algarve) near Portimao with its racing school, driving experiences, events and activities.

The best airport to fly to is Faro which is only a 45 minute drive to Vale da Ribeira - straight down the main A22 motorway. N.B. As of 2012 there is now a toll charge applicable for those using the A22 but you don't pass through any toll booths. Instead the government ask that you pay (within 5 days of your travel) at a local pay station. Please check these details with your car hire company as they may have built this detail into your rental package - they will also be able to advise you on how to pay, etc.

Lisbon airport is about a 2.5 hour drive and nearly all motorway driving so a good alternative. It is a good idea to have some Euros with you as there are toll roads along the way and you'll be able to pass through these quickly if you have change rather than notes.

Airlines such as TAP Portugal, Monarch, EasyJet and BA all fly into both airports and it's a good idea to shop around as there is nearly always a good deal to be found. Sometimes the price you see when you first do your search doesn't include the extras for baggage, choosing your seat, speedy boarding, etc, etc which can suddenly change a cheap ticket into something a little more expensive. Also watch out for the weight restrictions on baggage which can change with some airlines all the time - their website will list what the current restrictions are. Finally there are sometimes tick boxes which ask whether you want 1 bag (plus 1 piece of hand luggage) per person and it's a good idea to check your confirmation to make sure you can take enough bags - saving any frantic repacking if you've unknowingly booked 1 main piece of luggage for the whole family!

There are a lot of car hire companies in Portugal and sometimes your airline will offer you a discount if you use their partner company - have a look on their website once you have booked your flights. I have used a local Lagos company for many years who, for me, have always been very reliable and they will offer anyone booking through me an all-inclusive, discounted, deal - they include unlimited drivers, children's seats and zero-excess in their policy with this deal. If you'd like to speak to them please let me know and I'll send you on the email. They can also offer a transfer service from the airport to the villa (and back) which is really useful for people who aren't confident about motorway driving. Given the position of Vale da Ribeira I would recommend a car for local journeys so if you've had a transfer from the airport they can also arrange to drop off a car to you at the property. They don't service any arrivals from Lisbon unfortunately and I don't know anyone to recommend other than the normal companies like Hertz - leave plenty of time to pick up your car though as it can take quite a long time to get through the queues in Lisbon.

Vale da Ribeira is located just off the EN125, about 10km East of Lagos. Directions and access details for the property are sent to you when you've paid your final balance but if you'd like to know an exact location please do let me know and I can give you some coordinates. Some searches (for example Google Earth) aren't completely up to date so the images may date back to a time when the site was under construction in 06/07.
