Home description

This villa is a fantastic place to stay if you are looking for a mix of the peace and quiet of the Western Algarve with it's beautiful beaches and open countryside, as well as the vibrant markets, social atmosphere and outdoor activities of Lagos.

Newly finished in 2008, the villa is traditional in look but has all the mod cons you need to fully relax and feel very much at home. Built over 2 floors this villa has a superb outlook across the surrounding countryside and a large heated swimming pool to the rear. The village itself has a Wellness Centre which offers a range therapies and beauty treatments available to book throughout the year and also has a sandwich and juice bar for those who simply want to relax by the pool at lunchtime. Also on site are floodlit tennis courts and a children's play area making this villa fantastic for family holidays.

Ideal for golfers this villa is within close proximity to some of the best golf courses in the area, the nearest being Parc da Floresta and Boa Vista both within 5 minutes - in some cases the on site management team at AlmaVerde will be able to arrange discounts on green fees. Other courses within a 30 min drive are Palmares Golf, Penina and Alto Golf.

The on site management team is able to organise nannies or babysitters as well as a chef should you require.

The Algarve region

The Western Algarve enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers and mild wet winters. In the summer, the heat is moderated by cooling north westerly Atlantic breezes.

The region enjoys an average of over 8 hours of sunshine per day, or 3,000 hours of sunshine annually. The period from the end of May until mid-September is dry, with only 6% of the annual rainfall occurring during that period. Most of the rainfall occurs between November and February.

The temperature of the Atlantic water is fairly constant, typically varying between 14 to 18 degrees Celsius. In the summer, the higher inland temperatures over the Iberian land mass create an area of low pressure that sets up wind currents bringing in the cooler Atlantic air. Weather conditions near the Atlantic coast are thus more moderate than further inland.

The prevailing north westerly breezes tend to be stronger in the afternoons and also stronger in the summer months, when inland temperatures are at their highest.

Springtime is notable for the many varieties of wild flowers that bloom so profusely in the area. The salt-tolerant species that carpet the rocky peninsula between Sagres and Cape St. Vincent are part of a unique ecology that has been designated by the EU as a bio-genetic reserve.

The ecosystem on which AlmaVerde is situated forms a strip from Sagres to Loulé known as the barrocal. At its maximum, this strip is no more than 5 to 6 km wide. The barrocal is characterised by undulating limestone hills with a thin soil cover and rocky outcrops.

The area around AlmaVerde is rich in flora, with large areas of rock rose (cistus), oak (quercus) and mastic (pistacia lentiscus) shrubland. The area has long been used for subsistence farming and there are old stands of fig, olive (olea europaea), almond (prunus dulcis) trees and small vineyards.

Lagos / Burgau area

AlmaVerde is the perfect base from which to enjoy the abundant range of sports and leisure activities that the Western Algarve has to offer.

Long, sunny summers and mild winters make the area one of Europe’s premier golf destinations. There are more than twenty courses within an hour’s drive, including some of the top champion-ship courses in Europe.

The open countryside is ideal for Rambling, Bird Watching and Horse Riding and, further inland, the ecology changes and the steeper hillsides provides unlimited challenges for mountain bikers.

Lagos Marina has the best facilities of any Portuguese marina. You can also rent dinghies, wind surfers, or go water-skiing from the beaches at Praia da Luz and Meia Praia. For surfers, the rugged west coast beaches, with their long Atlantic rollers, are an irresistible target.

For the truly adventurous, there are opportunities for parasailing, paragliding and even learning to fly microlight aircraft. Scuba divers can explore caves and wrecks in the nearby coastal waters, and discover an abundance of sea life.

The waters around the Cape St. Vincent peninsula are among the best in Europe for big-game fishing. Well-equipped boats are available from Lagos Marina. The beaches in the Western Algarve are among the most beautiful and least crowded in Europe. Choose from among the many sheltered sandy coves along the South coast, or venture a little further a field to one of the more dramatic West coast beaches, open to the full force of the Atlantic swell.

With well over 100 restaurants in Lagos and the surrounding area, plus a myriad of cafés, there are options to tempt even the most the discerning palate. The cuisine is mostly Portuguese, but there are also some English, French, Italian, Indian and Chinese restaurants, and one Middle Eastern restaurant. For families, there are two water parks and a marine park within a 45 minute drive of AlmaVerde.

Golfers have access to some of the best golf courses in the Algarve, and if golf really isn't your thing Vale da Ribeira is very close to some of the most beautiful beaches - some secluded with just a small beach bar and some more popular. Lagos is within 10 minutes drive which offers a supermarket, bars, restaurants, good night life and one of the longest beaches in the Algarve.

Those interested in birding can enjoy one of Europe's principal migration spots for both land and seabirds. Bathed in a Mediterranean climate, with a year round marine influence, the area is excellent for bird watching in all seasons. With the Parque Natural de Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina on its doorstep and other interesting sites nearby, a great variety of species can be seen, including a wealth of rare and highly sought for birds. The Costa Vicentina has recently been designated an IBA (Important Bird Area), a world-wide network implemented by Birdlife International. In addition, two important European conservation statutes have been applied: the entire area is designated an SPA (Special Protection Area) for avifauna, and the area north and west of the villa is part of Rede Natura 2000.

Faro airport is approximately 50 minutes drive from the property and airlines such as Monarch, EasyJet, BA and TAP Portugal provide flights.

We have a organised an all inclusive discounted price with our recommended car hire company LagoRent who are based in Lagos. LagoRent have a small kiosk at the airport where you will sign all the necessary documents, etc, on your first visit - for any future visit you will be told the plate of your car and where it is found, meaning you have the privilege of walking off the plane and into the car.....as a frequent flyer I cannot recommend this more!

Directions from the airport to the villa are simple - follow the A22 toward Lagos and take the exit at Junction1 (signposted Vila do Bispo & Lagos). From here take the EN125 toward Vila do Bispo and drive into AlmaVerde Village at the Burgau traffic lights.
