TRES MARES (Three Seas)
House | 6 bedrooms | sleeps 14
Exquisite Portuguese Villa, for 4 to 12 adults plus youngsters on Funchal Ridge, Lagos.
Walled pool complex with kitchen/BBQ and badmington court. One acre gardens. Ocean and Farmland Vistas...Lawns...Orchard...Exceptional Library... Luxuriously comfortable...Private...
The house is at a high point of the Funchal ridge, between Lagos and Praia da Luz, in Western Algarve, with all-round views of countryside and 150 degree views of the Atlantic. The old towns and superb beaches of Lagos and Luz are to east and west. To the north - directly outside Tres Mares front gate - are orchards and vineyards and the peaks of the Monchique range 10 kms away.
Within the property a calçada (cobbled) driveway leads through established oleanders, olives, almonds, and figs, to a large farmhouse-style once-family home, without close neighbours. There are shaded lawns, many flower beds, a small orchard, and terraces cascading down the hillside. One part of the garden near the house has been relaid during 2012 with many specimen plants and bushes. An enclosed gazebo now looks south over the valley and catches the Algarve sunsets (and is great for bird-watching).
Separate from the house and reached by steps is an impressive pool and badminton complex, high-walled for safety and entered by a single gate. Here there is a well-equipped kitchen, with BBQ and stove and plenty of chairs and tables under cover. Also showers and changing rooms, and a bar and of course there are sufficient sun-beds and umbrellas for everyone.
The pool is large (12 metres by 6 by 2) with diving board, three sets of access steps, and a ledge all around at a depth of about one metre to help poor swimmers. Alongside the pool, which is tiled and can be heated, is a hard badminton court, nearly full-size, and usable for any ball games. (Old racquets supplied but not guaranteed).
The villa was built on a large-scale, with wooden ceiling beams everywhere, upstairs and down, and with red-tiled floors. On two sides are deep verandas for relaxing and outside dining - great places for snacks, drinks, reading or candlelit dinners !
There is a large sunken Sitting-room with ceiling fans and an open fire, comfortable sofas for everyone, and a music centre. The Dining-room seats twelve, partly in salon chairs copied from an Austrian Palace, under a chandelier. In the Library are sofas and a TV with SKY satellite reception and CD and VCR players, and a piano. (A second independent TV with SKY is in a ground floor double bedroom). In the Library are thousands of non-fiction books on many subjects and elsewhere in the house are other non-fiction collections. Also in the house are thousands of fiction titles. Wifi broadband is free and easily accessed.
Throughout the house are paintings collected over many years, and in most rooms also are pieces of antique and Victorian furniture.
The house kitchen and the domestic facilities are fully equipped, and the kitchen itself has a “breakfast” table for ten. There are two laundry and maids' rooms with laundry machines, fridge/freezers, hot water tanks, and a shower room and WC for the domestic staff.
Sleeping accommodation consists of fourteen 'units' in six separate suites, all generously furnished as comfortable bed-sitting rooms, ensuite with their bathrooms, and with generous cupboard space. Two double beds, eight single beds, two bunkbeds (and a double put-u-up). On the first floor the two bedrooms have large private terraces (with fantastic views), and air-con. On the ground floor four bedrooms and suites are well separated from the 'public' rooms of the house and arranged along a corridor …. they have air-con or ceiling fans, and open onto flower beds and one of the lawns. Bathrooms are tiled and have baths, separate shower cabinets, toilets, bidets, and hand-basins.
In total, the house and grounds occupy about one hectare. The layout of the house can suit four people as comfortably as fourteen, teenage children as well as adults, different groups, and grandparents wanting peace and quiet. It is an excellent venue for special occasions - in 2012 these included a wedding with 40 guests.
(In summary …...... the house equipment includes hob/stoves,ovens; fridges/freezers; three microwave ovens; dishwasher; washing machine; tumble dryer; iron/ironing board; two TVs with SKY satellite, DVD and VCR; house telephone; broadband; air-con to three bedrooms and ceiling fans elsewhere; free-standing radiators. Double linen and blankets for beds; cutlery, plates, and glasses, serving dishes; cooking utensils; etc, etc, etc. )
All electricity, gas, water, laundry, maintenance and maid service are included.

The Algarve region
Lagos is located on the edge of a superb bay and has five different beaches all within walking distance of the town centre. A modern marina dominates the sea front and the town is a centre for tourists from all over the world. There are some lovely churches to be explored, as well as a regional museum and the old Governors' Palace. Strolling around day or evening you will find good sea food restaurants, bars, great shops and many other diversions to choose from, day and night all year round.
Here are some of the best family beaches in the Algarve, clean, golden, sheltered and gently shelving.
In the Lagos area there are other excellent beaches and resorts like Praia da Luz, Burgau and Salema, all small fishing villages not long ago, now firmly established as family villa and apartment resorts. Development has been largely sensitively controlled and the laid-back spirit of the locals has survived the changes.
The Costa Vicentina national park borders these resorts and extends north up to Odeceixe on the west coast, so the inland is rugged and sparse but also a haven for wildlife and flora. A paradise for bird watchers and surfers all year round !
Many beaches, big and small, sandy or with rocks and coves, just down the road from us, at TRES MARES
