The Algarve region
Love it or hate it, the Algarve is Portugal's premier holiday destination, with pretty beaches, brash resorts and picturesque whitewashed towns that flood with foreigners when summer arrives. While the party atmosphere isn't for everyone, the setting is undeniably beautiful: breathtaking cliffs, wide golden sands, natural bays, scalloped beaches and long sandy islands with waves lapping at the shore. Outside the touristy enclaves, there are quiet castle towns, flower-covered hillsides and enchanting stretches of shoreline still untouched by development.
The towns themselves aren't as varied as the coastline, but still offer a wide range of personalities. Lagos, with its cobbled streets, young crowd and abundant nightlife, is the carnival queen of the Algarve. Monchique is a quaint town with fine views over the steep wooded countryside. Tavira, set along a peaceful river, remains elegant and laid-back, with a history dating back to the Romans. The capital of the region, Faro, has a more Portuguese feel than some, and a fascinating medieval quarter. Out on the rugged west coast, small, charming towns like Sagres and Carrapateira attract a surf-loving crowd, while cliffside Albufeira sees a wider mix of travellers.
Lagos is one of the most visited cities in the Algarve and Portugal, due to its variety of tourist-friendly beaches, bars, restaurants, and hotels, renowned for its vibrant summer nightlife and parties. Yet, Lagos is also a historic centre of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, frequent home of Henry the Navigator, historical shipyard and, at one time, centre of the European slave trade. In 2012, travel website TripAdvisor, classified Lagos as the number 1 travel destination, on a list of "15 destinations on the rise" worldwide.

If you turn right when leaving the entrance road of Casa Contente and straight at the roundabout, direction Bensafrim, you see left a square, after approx. 500 m., before you come into the center of the village. Here you can buy each morning (excluding Sundays) until approx. 12 o'clock fresh bread, and in the market hall fresh vegetables, daily fresh fish etc. In the center of Bensafrim you will find at the small square left a small supermarket. In the village there is also an "Alisuper", a small supermarket.

On the old road to Lagos, at the roundabout go straight. On the left side, in the middle of the village restaurant O' Tacho. Reasonable good food and value for money!
Also in Bensafrim, a new restaurant named O' Koala. Never been there yet, but “good food and reasonably priced” a recent guest wrote me!For you who crave for pancakes and sweet Hansel & Gretel, Rua Barragem da Bravura, N125-9, Bensafrim 8600-070 is really great place for sweet teeth.
Barão São João
If you pass through Bensafrim you turn right at the first junction to Barão São João. After approx. 4-5 km left, directly after the ZOO, you will see restaurant O Cangalho, on Tuesday evening during dinner with Fado "flaming" snack beforehand.
