The Algarve region
The Algarve is Portugal's playground; with more than 30 top class golf courses, numerous tennis and riding centres and facilities for just about every watersport under the sun, the Algarve is a popular choice for active holiday-makers. More indolent Travellers are drawn by the marvellous beaches which, as well as the weather, are among the best in Europe. Washed by Atlantic water and sheltered by honey-coloured sandstone cliffs west of Faro, they extend along almost the entire southern coast.
The Western Algarve is one of the most varied and rewarding parts of the region, an area of great natural beauty unspoilt by overdevelopment. With over 300 days of sunshine every year the climate is one of the most pleasant in the world. Summers are hot (28ºC) and dry, and winters are mild (15ºC) with hardly any rain. July and August are the hottest and busiest months of the year, but are often cooled by a pleasant sea breeze.
This sunny climate makes the Algarve an all-year-round golfing destination. For Golfers the main season is from late autumn to late spring, with warm sunny days, allowing keen golfers the opportunity to play in perfect conditions when courses in the UK are unplayable or partly closed. With the many top class golf courses it’s easy to see why the Algarve is also considered Europe’s ultimate all-year-round golfing destination.
Boavista is ideally situated to explore the Western Algarve. The beaches up the western coast are quite magnificent and still in their natural state; the whole area is now protected by law, so any future development will be small scale. The west coast is a haven for those in search of tranquillity and the chance to experience real Portuguese life in quaint towns and picturesque fishing villages.
Turn inland to the spectacular Monchique mountains and you'll find lush woods and shady streams; here too is the highest peak in the Algarve at Foia, rising to 900m, drive up and enjoy the panoramic views. A day trip into these beautiful shady hills makes for a refreshing change of scenery, particularly on a blistering hot summer's day
The Algarve is a place where you can take it easy. There are no hidden hassles or pitfalls for the unwary Traveller. Just relax and enjoy the sunshine, try the delightful and inexpensive local wines, dine out on what is arguably the best seafood in Europe and enjoy the good-natured hospitality of your Portuguese hosts.
Lagos / Boavista area
Lagos is, to many, the most interesting town to visit; it combines fun with facination. It has all the ingredients for a successful holiday; plenty of sights, a friendly atmosphere, good restaurants, trendy bars and excellent beaches. It has a superb natural harbour and a long history, The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Moors all settled here, and it was the capital of the Algarve from 1576 to 1765. It was the site for Europe's first slave market where hundreds of thousands of captives were bought and sold for a few Reals; it now enjoys a happier reincarnation as an art gallery. Lagos is a unique little jewel in the Algarve. The town is a maze of cobbled streets, whitewashed buildings, museums, historic buildings and open squares with a seemingly endless variety of restaurants for every budget.
Further east along the coast is Portimao, famous for sardine lunches and shopping; the town itself is sedate but its southern suberb, Praia da Roche is a busy holiday resort.
The beaches around Lagos are some of the most beautiful of the Algarve, like Praia de Dona Ana, which can be reached after a 25 minutes walk from the centre of the town, Praia do Camilo, a bit further on, and Meia Praia, whose sands stretch for 4 km (2.5 miles) east of Lagos. However, it is the promontory named Ponta da Piedade and sheltering the bay of Lagos which is most admired by visitors, with its caves, rocks and wonderfully transparent waters. A few kilometres west of Lagos is Luz with a good sized sandy beach with sailing, windsurfing, and other water sports all on tap. Further along the coast are Burgau and Salema both extremely pretty fishing villages with red roofed cottages and cobbled streets. Venture further still along this coastline and you'll find many secluded beaches Zaival, Ingrina, Barranco and Joao Vaz - the latter a favourite spot for those in search of an all-over tan.
The Boavista Resort boasts a wide range of sporting and leisure activities, a championship golf course and golf academy, clubhouse, restaurant, large outdoor heated swimming pool, children's pool, tennis academy with two floodlit courts, five-a-side football pitch and a safe children’s play area.
Activities
There is a host of sporting activities nearby including: mountain biking, walking, horse riding, diving, fishing, paragliding, sailing, surfing, water skiing, windsurfing, kite-surfing and tennis.
Fishing trips can be made from Lagos to the surrounding Atlantic waters or take a boat trip to visit the many grottos and explore the spectacular rock formations, caves and coves. There is a market on the 1st Saturday of the month in Lagos, a farmers market (every Saturday) and a daily fresh fish market. Other attractions within 30 minutes drive from the apartment include water parks, theme parks and the Algarve shopping complex near Guia, which has a variety of shops a bowling alley and a cinema.
Theme Parks include:
Zoomarine - Entertainment park with seal and dolphin shows, parrots, aquariums, merry-go-rounds, pool and restaurant Krazyworld - A combination of small zoo with crazy golf. Aqualand - Aquapark with water-chutes, swimming pools for adults and children. Slide & Splash - It is considered to be the biggest of its kind in the country, and claims to be one of the biggest and the best in Europe.
Should you wish to arrange discounted excursions or ask advice about local attractions, our onsite management company Careways are on hand to help you with arrangements.
