The Algarve / West Algarve region
The Western Algarve is Portugal's southernmost region. It is an area of stunning natural beauty with rugged mountain landscapes and coastlines frilled with rocky coves and fantastic sandy beaches, providing a treasure trove of secluded bathing spots and scenic walks, often unsignposted and hidden from the road by high sand dunes making every one an amazing discovery for the intrepid explorer. Needless to say this sun-drenched coastline is perfect for outdoor pursuits such as tennis, horse riding and bird-watching. It is a haven for watersports enthusiasts who enjoy yachting and windsurfing and a true golfers paradise with its many championship golf courses on offer. But for those of you who simply want to relax and unwind, the Algarve's almost tropical climate boasts over 3,000 hours of sunshine each year making it ideal for sun worshippers.
For those of you who are interested in the regions rich culture and history you won't be disappointed. Discover quaint villages set on the seafront or tucked away in the hills, the charming walled port of Lagos with its handsome marina and 17th century Fort, the lovely spa town of Caldes de Monchique is well worth a visit and ancient Silves with its Moorish castle. Further west lies the historic town of Sagres and clifftop Cape St Vincent, Europe's most southerly point amongst many, many more.
Lagos / Meia Praia area
Lagos is the third largest town in the Algarve, straddling the river Bensafrim and surrounded by beautiful, unspoilt countryside. It is a lively, cozy town with a maze of winding cobbled streets full of pavement restaurants, local cafés, bars, antique and art shops, and what must be one of the world's best stocked fish markets. It is also rich in culture and history, and is widely regarded as the most charming town of the Algarve. Lagos has an excellent nightlife centred around the old town, but merely wandering through the maze of winding streets soaking up the atmosphere is entertainment enough. There is a fine sandy beach in town beneath the imposing wall of the ancient Fortress which still stands guard over the harbour entrance. Perhaps the most impressive beach in the area is Meia Praia, a 5 kilometer stretch of golden sand. It begins on the eastern side of the railway station and has watersport facilities, sun-beds and sun shades for hire. The string of small beaches on the western side of Lagos including the picturesque Praia D´Ana and Porto de Mós appeal to those who prefer smaller more intimate coves, although some can only be reached by boat or by the famous cliff walk which is only recommended for the sure-footed. A short boat trip from Lagos takes you round the rock formations and grottoes of Ponta da Piedade, between Luz and Lagos. The boats depart from Praia D`Ana. Boat (day) trips to Sagres give you the possibility of seeing the beautiful coast line from Lagos to Sagres. These trips start from the pontoon in the harbour.

There is a wide selection of low-cost charter and schedule flights operating daily into FARO airport. Your onward car journey to Lagos is well sign posted and is approx 1hours drive from the airport. Just wanted you to know what a brilliant time we had in Portugal. Villa Kay was absolutely perfect. It had everything we needed and more and it was a great location.
