One of the Western Algarve's most beautifully located private villas, the quinta is set on 4.5 acres with park-like, mature gardens. The property affords a spectacularly attractive view across the fields towards the ocean. A beautiful pool area surrounds a salt water infinity pool. The garden is fenced and hedged and very private. Many almond trees, olive trees, flowering trees and shrubs, and some enormous cacti. Nearby village with regionally famous bakery, excellent butcher, cafes and restaurants and a small daily market, provides everything needed for daily life. This artist's residence is rustic around the edges, with a soft, lived-in feel. The overall atmosphere is artistic and romantic, with a strong sense of privacy and connection with nature.

The golden beach of Meia Praia, the old town of Lagos, and two of the Algarve's most famous golf courses 4, Meridien Penina and Onyria Palmares, are all within 10 minutes. Another dozen great courses are within 15-20 min.

Tranquil haven

Annie K., London, UK. Posted to: holiday-rentals.co.uk., 2010

This is an astonishingly beautiful villa in a wonderful location. As soon as we arrived, we felt we had made the right choice, and so did our friends that spent the two subsequent weeks. The villa is far from the madding crowd, and tourist buzz, but not remote. Good local produce is easily available, as is an excellent "Waitrose" type of supermarket. This was so important to us, as the villa was so beautiful we didn't paticuarly want to leave it, and really enjoyed cooking and eating in! The villa was very comfortable, with modern touches that were greatly appreciated by us. We are never without a lap-top, or ipods, so wi fi was extemely useful. We also liked the owners taste, simple and modern, and absolutely no chintz! The villa had the most stunning garden, which the children were free to roam and explore. It felt very safe, and fabulous for them to have the kind of freedom it's so much harder to find back home in London. The local beaches were exciting with many watersports readily available. My children really enjoyed the "big waves" at Mei prai, but also snorkelling in the calm waters of Dona Ana just beyond Lagos. Overall the villa exceeded our expectations, and the reality is better that the web pictures. The owners were extemely gracious and hospitable and made our stay very enjoyable indeed.

A haven off the beaten track

John from Surrey, UK. Posted to: holiday-rentals.co.uk., 2011

We have just returned from our week in this beautiful villa. The quinta nestles into the hillside, its tall firs giving a tantalising glimpse of what's to follow. Turn off the road and onto the yellowed unmade track leaving a cloud of dust behind the car, and travel on up to the property, passing through the iron gates with the tumbling front lawn, established borders and cacti marking you way up to the end of the track, and one of the entrances to this vast villa. It's a great start to what will be an unforgettable stay at this traditional Portuguese quinta. And it only gets better. Moving into the villa you encounter shelves generously stocked with literature, much of it betraying an interest in the arts, and the flagstone floors leading to a series of bedrooms and bathrooms, each well proportioned and stocked with storage and the comforts you'd find at home. But perhaps the most stunning part of the property is the pool and its surrounds. Looking out of the sets full height patio doors, and across the lawn, you'll see the turquoise blue of a full size swimming pool, again surrounded by established flora and fora, providing the ultimate in privacy. Here you'll also find what appears as a folly, but venture around the back of this cylindrical building that houses a table for al fresco dining, you'll climb stairs to its roof and to a vantage point where you can survey the grounds of the villa, and look across the valley to the ocean beyond. As you can probably tell, we had a fabulous time! On a more practical side, the villa's location gives easy access to main roads opening up trips to a variety of beaches and towns and to shops and other attractions, as well as the inevitable golf courses. Would we stay at this quinta again? You bet!

Beautiful villa, excellent location

Family of 8, Northamptonshire, UK. Posted to: holiday-rentals.co.uk., 2010

We have just returned from our week in this beautiful villa. The owners are very welcoming and keen to ensure everything was as it should be and that we enjoyed our holiday with plenty of helpful recommendations for places to visit, eat, shop etc. The villa is a lovely and interesting place to spend time; very spacious, unique design, high quality, clean, comfortable and well equipped. Our only niggle is that it's best not to shower when the garden is being watered! The pool is a delight all the family enjoyed and very private. The villa's position is fantastic - in its own space away from other properties with excellent views to the sea but still close to wonderful beaches and Lagos - a good place to spend enjoyable evenings.

Truly beautiful.

We have been lucky enough to spend ten fantastic days in this beautiful villa, the grounds and villa were truly magical! We were a family of seven which included two teenagers their was something to do for everyone - wether it was sunbathing around the beautiful pool or reading on the balcony, this villa suited all. Ineke and Peter were very helpful and accommodating. We cannot wait to visit again.

Shangri La

David G. , United Kingdom. Posted to: holiday-rentals.co.uk., 2010

If there ever was such a place then Quinta das Achadas Ruivas would surely be it! Fabulous! The location, overlooking open country to the Bay of Lagos. The Quitna, homely and spacious and the pool - saltwater (but not too salty) and no smelly chlorine to wash off skin and swim ware. A night swim with the pool light on is a must. Our three week holiday was just like being 'at home', but in a warmer climate, we felt so relaxed in the property. Ineke and Peter, the owners, were charming hosts and most helpful if questions required answering. Maria, the maid, was quiet, efficient and unobtrusive. Would I recommend a stay here? Absolutely!

Total relaxation

Carrots, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Posted to: holiday-rentals.co.uk., 2010

This is our second visit to this beautiful villa, we holiday as a family of 8 all varying ages, we find the villa wonderfully comfortable, very interesting surroundings and totally relaxing. We really enjoy the very varied bird population, the very interesting plantlife, and of course the wonderful pool, which is very well used during our stay. The villa is situated in a very convenient area, we do venture out into Lagos occasionally, but are very content to stay around the villa, as it offers many ways of relaxing, be it just sitting and reading, walking around the grounds or sunbathing, there is something to do for everyone. We would highly recommend this villa to anyone wishing to see the most beautiful part of Portugal, and we are planning a third visit in 2011.

Exceeded expectations

'We had a wonderful time at your villa, it is a truly beautiful place. It exceeded all of our expectations, you have a little piece of heaven on earth!'

Classy villa, wonderful experience.

Tom M., Twickenham, UK. Posted to: algarvilla.org., 2010

Our stay was absolutely delightful. The views towards the sea and the nearby village are very beautiful, making you feel away from it all, yet close to it.The house is spacious and has an easygoing feel, which helps relaxation. The garden is a kind of oasis, which attracts lots of birds. I have never hears such variety of birdsong. Most days we hardly got off the property, being content to lounge around the pool. We also liked the fact that this is not a pure rental property but a private house, with well chosen art and many books. Highly recommended.

The villa is set on the Southern flank of a low elongated hill, which it shares with only one other villa, not in view, and half a dozen farmhouses along its foot. Almond trees, fig trees, and flowering shrub all around. The overall atmosphere is very peaceful. The hill, a protected area, is covered in short blue iris in early spring. There are foxes, partridges, hedgehogs, toads, and many kinds of birds nestling in the many cypresses and palms. Nearest beach is Meia Praia, 3 miles of golden sand, 10 mins away by car. There are several pretty little restaurants right on the beach. The popular Praia de Batata and Porto de Mos beaches are within 15 mins. There are many other great beaches within 30 mins, some of them very quiet and spectacular, including the West coast beaches, great for surfing and surf watching.

The Algarve region

Travel magazines consistently rate the Algarve as one of the most attractive regions in Europe. It is easy to see why. Unlike other popular destinations, the coasts are not overdeveloped, so that you can still enjoy the orginal natural surroundings. This is particularly true for the Western Algarve, the area around Lagos, where this villa is located. It is less developed than the Eastern Algarve, and therefore has a more quiet, traditional feel. It is also the greenest part of the Algarve. It is renowned for its numerous top end golf courses, and also for the many attractive fishing villages - and hence, of course, for the seafood, which is delicious.

The Atlantic location means that although it is sunny throughout the summer, other than on the Mediterranean, the heat is never overpowering. The climate begins to be warm in early spring, and stays warm well into October. Even in the winter you can have really warm days, but the nights are noticably cooler.

There are many interesting excursions to be made, to the west coast for instance, a mere 30 minutes, perhaps starting with a visit the the 'land's end' of Cape St. Vincent, or to medieval Silves, an old Moorish town also within half an hour. Praia da Rocha, with its sparkling night life, is 20 minutes from the house. But the best perhaps is, that there is a wonderful, cozy and inexpensive local restaurant only half a mile from the villa, that serves some of the world's best rack of lamb, great (and large) steaks, and some the best grilled fish around - all that at crawling distance from the house.

Other interesting features of the area are the nearby Marina de Lagos, with its top shelf amenities, one of Europe's best kite-surfing areas, the Lagoon of Alvor, visible from the house, balloon flights, ultra-light and helicopter flights. There is kayaking both on the ocean and on rivers, great horse-riding in unspoilt countryside, spectacular blue water fishing and cliff angling, and lovely cycling - downhill only if you like. The nearby Monchique mountains offer a totally different feel, somewhat fresher of course, very green, and with stunning views.

Lagos

Lagos is the third largest town in the Algarve, straddling the river Bensafrim and surrounded by beautiful, unspoilt countryside. It is a lively, cozy town with a maze of winding cobbled streets full of pavement restaurants, local cafés bars, antique and art shops, and what must be one of the world's best stocked fish markets. It is also rich in culture and history, and is widely regarded as the most charming town of the Algarve.

Lagos was an important coastal settlement well before the beginning of our era. The impressive town walls, still largely intact, date back to Roman times. During the Moorish occupation which lasted until the 12th century, Lagos was the centre of trade between Portugal and Africa.

In the days of the great discoveries, Lagos was the heart of naval Portugal. Its ship yards built the caravels for the voyages of exploration, and it was here, close to Cape St. Vincent, the South-Westerly tip of continental Europe, that Henry the Navigator´s captains, Gil Eanes and Magelhães took to the sea.

Still a fishing town, and since the end of the last century the home of a major marina, Lagos has a rich nautical flavour. The gaily painted fishing boats line berths along the river, yachts sail out to Madeira, the Azores and the far ends of the earth.

This is the first time in six years that we have had anything other than a five star review, so it hurts to see this posting, written with clear intent to dent our stellar reputation - an intent not shared by the rest of the party, who wrote to us that they had a lovely time, and when contact by phone were clearly embarrassed by this contribution from one member of their group. We considered a point by point rebuttal, but realized that it is probably pretty obvious from the contrast with all the other reviews that this particular one was written from a spiteful frame of mind, not necessarily truthful, leave alone grateful. So we shall just leave it at this. Some people will not be happy with the choices they make whatever you do.

"Wonderful stay in a fantastic house!"

A really unique house in a beautiful secluded place on the hills of the Algarve with a wonderful view over Odiaxere and to the sea, as well from the rooms as the terras and the big and magic infinity pool.
The house itself is very spacious, with lots of privacy for every couple if you wish for it, due to the private bathrooms and even private terrases.
The owners were very welcoming informing us about there favourite restaurants (which we really enjoyed), and made the best effort to make our stay unforgettable!
We would really recommend it to anyone!

"Beautiful Villa and surroundings"

My family and I had a fantastic time at the Quinta.

Peter and Ineke were there to let us into the villa and show us arround, they also gave some great information on the area including a recomendation to a local restaurant called O Caseiro which was fantastic!

The villa was superb, loads of space and very comfortable. The pool area and gardens are brilliant with plenty of room to enjoy the sun or relax in the shade.

The local town of Odaxiere has a good market, butchers and a couple of nice bars and restaurants.

I would definately recomend to anyone.

Thanks again Peter & Ineke
