The Algarve / West Algarve region
A new day dawns in the Western Algarve. The early morning mist clears, revealing a beautiful green and ochre land. The wild flowers open to catch the sun. A farmer guides his mule cart to market. Down at the shore, the fishermen check their nets after bringing home the night’s catch.
The new day brings new opportunities. You can simply relax on the beach. Choose from among the many sheltered sandy coves along the south coast, or venture a little further to one of the more dramatic west coast beaches, open to the full grandeur of the Atlantic swell.
Situated within the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, these beaches are among the most beautiful and least crowded in Europe. The park protects one hundred and fifty kilometres of unspoilt coastline. Explore the cliffs and ravines, roam free among sand dunes and heath lands, and discover a hidden wealth of flora and fauna.
As midday approaches, cooling Atlantic air currents provide a welcome counterpoint to the summer heat. Time to enjoy a game of tennis or a round of golf. Or take out a sport fishing boat from Lagos’ award-winning marina.
Colourful Lagos, the launching point for Portugal’s epic voyages of discovery, has been a local centre of commerce since medieval times. The markets display a wide variety of fresh produce. The pavement restaurants serve locally caught seafood at surprisingly reasonable prices. In the evening, the narrow cobbled lanes come alive with people watching the street performers and thronging the bars that stay open until late. And at night, the way home is illuminated by the stars that shine so brightly in the crystal clear air.
The Western Algarve enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers and mild wet winters. In the summer, the heat is moderated by cooling north westerly Atlantic breezes.
The Lagos / Burgau area
Long, sunny summers and mild winters make the area one of Europe’s premier golf destinations. There are more than twenty courses within an hour’s drive, including some of the top champion-ship courses in Europe.
The open, undulating countryside is ideal for rambling. The landscape is criss-crossed with old tracks through fig and olive groves. Riding centres nearby offer inexpensive packages for all ages and levels of skill. Further inland, the ecology changes, and the steeper hillsides are covered in rock rose, pine, cork oak and strawberry trees. Here the terrain provides unlimited challenges for mountain bikers.
Many bird species feed and nest at AlmaVerde, including colourful hoopoes, azure-winged magpies and bee-eaters. The Western Algarve is also a popular location for sighting migrating species. For you sailors, Lagos Marina has the best facilities of any Portuguese marina. You can also rent dinghies, wind surfers, or go water-skiing from the beaches at Praia da Luz and Meia Praia. For surfers, the rugged west coast beaches, with their long Atlantic rollers, are an irresistible target.
Are you truly adventurous? There are opportunities for parasailing, paragliding and even learning to fly microlight aircraft. Scuba divers can explore caves and wrecks in the nearby coastal waters, and discover an abundance of sea life.
The waters around the Cape St. Vincent peninsula are among the best in Europe for big-game fishing. Magnificent marlin, swordfish, tuna and shark can all be found here. Well-equipped boats are available from Lagos Marina. Or try your hand at line fishing from the cliffs or rocky outcrops. It’s a precarious but popular pastime that often assures a delicious dinner.
AlmaVerde is in a 36 hectare landscaped rural setting among mature oak, pine and carob trees in the heart of the Western Algarve. The site enjoys an elevated position with sweeping views over the surrounding countryside. To the North, the site overlooks the traditional village of Barão de São Miguel, and to the South, the Burgau valley and coastal hills. The beach at the picturesque fishing village of Burgau is just three minutes by car, while the historic port of Lagos, with its colourful markets, attractive marina and vibrant nightlife, is only ten minutes away.

The villa was exactly as described when we made the booking. Beautiful quiet location with 3 bedrooms all en-suite, modern kitchen with microwave, dishwasher etc-all modern ! Outside seating area... more

The villa has a great layout, there's lots of space, and the kitchen, dining, lounge and bedrooms/bathrooms are all good sizes. It's decorated to a modern standard, and makes it feel home from home. Due to a cool-air system it keeps cool during the day. The pool is a good size (the kids loved it) and the garden just about big enough, with a good barbecue and table and chairs.
The semi-detached villa is on a purpose-built estate (called Alma-Verde) with many other villas (and many plots not yet built on), and on a road with several other villas (not shown in the main picture as they were not built at that time). The estate was relatively quiet for the 9 days we were there. The tennis courts and kids play area are very nice and well looked after. There is also a Spa house on site where you can pay for massages etc - which was very good.
The condition of the villa was fair, although it's in need of a few repairs (skirting in the kitchen was falling off, paint peeling, cracks in the walls etc), the outside needs a lick of paint, and in the kitchen some of the utensils are damaged and need replacing.
The Alma-Verde estate is in a good location, there are some nice quiet beaches close by (e.g. Burgau with a nice Beach Bar and restaurant on the beach) and Luz, and it's not too far to Slide and Splash, and Zoo-Marine (which was much better than expected). Lagos is very close, with some nice streets, and a nice restaurant at the Marina.
We had a few issues however at the villa. Unfortunately on arrival we had lots of ants in the kitchen and hall area which we had to buy some ant powder and spray for (which eradicated them for the rest of the week). Also, the pool had not been cleaned or heated as promised before arrival and after raising to the on-site management staff they sent a pool maintenance guy around the next day to sort this out, so we lost over a day of swimming in the pool while waiting for it to be cleaned and heated, and we couldn't jump straight in on arrival.
Also, there was no internet access (as advertised) for the whole of our stay. In the villa the router was not connecting properly to the ISP (although the router allowed a wifi connection), and when we tried in the Alma-Verde Reception area the 3G dongle (plugged into a Wi-Fi sharing hub) had run out of credit. The issue in the villa was reported to both the owner and the Alma-Verde Management staff on our first day, but it wasn't resolved by the time we left. We'd arrived with 2 smartphones, a tablet and a laptop but we couldn't use them for most of our stay which was disappointing. The visitor's book also reports similar issues as far back as 2009/2010.
Overall it was a pleasant villa, site, and location and some of the niggles were sorted out quickly, but it would have been even better for us had the internet connection worked.
