The Algarve region
The region is an extensive and pleasant one, with a Mediterranean-style microclimate with temperatures that vary from 15º C in winter through to 30º C in summer.
Some of the best and most beautiful beaches in the entire world are to be found in the Algarve. 200-kilometre coastline, the Algarve features all types of coves, cliffs and caves, its rocky beaches contrasting with broad expanses of sand. Visit the beaches of Carvoeiro, Benagil, Marinha and Caneiros.
A stroll through the tangled web of narrow streets, alleys and steps to be found away from the coast is the best way of getting to know this part of the region. Silves, the Moorish town is rich in history with the biggest castle in the Algarve and the most beautiful military monument to the Islamic period in Portugal.
After the enchantment of the landscape, you can discover the aromas and flavours of the traditional Algarve cuisine. The menu may consist of fish and shellfish, with such dishes as caldeirada de peixe (fish-stew) or cataplana de amêijoas (clams steamed in a copper pan), or you can enjoy the traditional mountain food of stewed chickpeas and cabbage.
The region's built heritage is something you cannot afford to miss. The architecture of the whitewashed houses, with their brightly-coloured mouldings and remarkably beautiful chimneys, the church belfries and the museums.
Also to be recommended is the range of outdoor sports that are available, whether you're playing golf on lush green courses or enjoying some physical exercise at some of the region's excellent facilities, whether you're on the coast or perhaps up in the hills, where, after the rigours of winter and even before the first signs of spring, the land is covered in a pinkish white blanket, produced by the blossom of the almond-trees scattered across the horizon.
The Algarve has something for every one.
Four Seasons is located in the exclusive 50 hectare Quinta dos Vales Wine and Art estate. Surrounded by vineyards and art sculptures. Only ten minutes from many of the beautiful sandy beaches of Carvoeiro and Ferragudo. Only five minutes drive away from two golf courses. The little village of Estômbar is only walking distance, where there is a market every weekday morning for fresh bread, meat, fish and vegetables, and there are plenty of small grocery stores, busy cafes and great local restaurants. Estômbar is one of the few villages in the Algarve as yet untouched by tourism. No hotels, resorts or caravan parks; it is still quiet and authentic with its twin-steepled heritage church. For a fabulous family day out, visit the historic town of Silves with its ancient Moorish castle, or visit the fantastic water park (Slide and Splash) and theme park (Zoo Marine) all are a short drive away.
