Quinta de Oxalá is a stunning restoration of an old farm cottage and is filled with interesting details and furnishings. The big sitting room with wooden floors is a special place to relax. The house is uniquely designed and perfect for a family holiday, or romantic getaway. There are plenty of spaces for everyone to find a favourite spot both indoors and outdoors. Three separate verandas, two sitting rooms and many outdoor areas to choose from. You can decide to dine indoors, on the spacious veranda or under an old carob tree shading the barbecue area overlooking the swimming pool. There is plenty of seating. Below the pool is a vine shaded terrace, the vegetable garden and a water fonte. A shaded bench beneath olive trees overlooks the water-lily pond. The farmhouse sits in countryside on the fringes of a small, unspoilt village.

The Algarve region

Algarve was known as the garden of Portugal, the range of hills and Monchique mountain protect it from the north and keep the temperature a few degrees warmer than the rest of Portugal. The main crop was olives, figs and almonds. This farm is a remnant of that time. Estombar was settled in Roman times and then later by the Moors, this is evident in names of the narrow, white streets. Its castle is one of the dozen on the Portguese 'Escudo', but is now just four stone walls at the end of my mother's garden, The fishing fleets are gone and the factories are now closed, but not long ago most of the villagers of Estombar used to work in the sardine factories that surrounded the estuary of the River Arade close by.

Lagoa / Estombar area

This is a country cottage only ten minutes from many of the Algarve's beautiful sandy beaches. Only five minutes drive away are two golf courses. The little village of Estômbar is only walking distance, where there is a market every weekday morning for fresh bread, meat, fish and vegetables, and there are plenty of small grocery stores, busy cafes and great local restaurants. Estômbar is one of the few villages in the Algarve as yet untouched by tourism. No hotels, resorts or caravan parks; it is still quiet and authentic with its twin-steepled heritage church which celebrates holy days with a canopied procession. The historical ancient Moorish capital city of Silves is just nine kilometres away. Within less than five kilometres are many different Atlantic beaches and resorts, golf courses, the towns of Portimão and Lagoa, a waterslide-park, and the freshwater natural spring pools and amphitheater at the nearby Fontes which holds a summer jazz festival. A kilometre from the cottage is Boca do Rio Club. Restaurant, indoor athletics pool, gymnasium and boat, waterski and board hire are abvailable.

How to get there

Quinta de Oxalá is in the Algarve in the south of Portugal close to the little village of Estômbar. On leaving Faro Airport roundabout, after 3 km take EXIT Portimão - Espanha. Follow the dual carriageway and after 3 km move to the left lane (do NOT follow Almancil) take the second EXIT - PORTIMÃO (not Espanha). Follow new highway IP1/A22 that traverses across the region from East to West, after 55 km take the exit 'Silves-Lagoa'.
Follow Lagoa taking the 'Lagoa Sul' exit (not Portimao-Estombar). At the roundabout turn right toward Estômbar, 2 km later on passing the level crossing at Estômbar, immediately turn right toward the village, follow the road to the right signposted 'Fontes' and at the top of the hill is a signpost to the left for 'Qta de Oxalá. The entrance is well marked, 100 metres along this road next to the Café Primavera on the right. The gravelled drive will bring you down to the carpark among the olive trees.

•In the main house is one double bedroom and one twin bedded room and two bathrooms, there is space for the cot in either room.
•Beside the pool is the Carob Tree Suite consisting of a double bedroom, a twin bedroom, a bathroom and a sunny veranda.
•The dining room, kitchen and smaller sitting room give out onto the long, wide shaded veranda.
•Next to the hall and big living room is the entrance veranda that looks out toward the lily-pond.
•The farmhouse is ideal for two families or three generations who wish to holiday together.
•A spacious secluded courtyard for private sunbathing.

Further details outdoors:
The rooms and verandas have ramps or gentle slopes to make pram and wheelchair access easy, there is even a ramp into the pool.
Depending on the season you will be able to pick fresh figs, plums, peaches, olives, passion fruit, medlars or grapes, crack your own almonds or collect herbal teas, and the lemons are ready to pick at any time of year. There is also a vegetable garden, sweet-peas, broad beans, garlic, tomatoes, onions, butternuts, melons all grown in season. The baker stops at the top of the lane by the cafe every morning, the ice-cream van and the market gardener come on a Saturday. The farmer grazes his sheep in his fields next door. The pond is full of water lilies, goldfish, and of course, frogs.

Further details

The cottage is available for long winter lets from October to February. The sitting room has underfloor heating and a log fireplace and the airconditioning also heats the house. It is a very comfortable and secure place to stay, and children and wheelchairs users are welcome. Should you wish to bring a nurse or a nanny there is a small separate, self contained apartment. Conditions

Properly trained dogs are welcome if they like cats, the farm has a cat called Diesel, she lives outdoors.
Wireless Internet access for those who bring a laptop. Email checking and browsing only. Sorry, no downlaoding of games and films.
Please smoke out of doors. The house has wooden ceilings and rafters which will hold the smell of cigarette smoke. A/C control handsets on request.
