The Lombardy / Bergamo Alps/Sondrio region

Bergamo- one of the most beautiful fortified cities in Italy, where the Venetian East blends with the meditative severity of the Lombard landscape. The province offers the tourist parks, enchanting holiday villages (Lovere), nature oases, spa centres, ski resorts, picturesque lakeshores and riverbanks, solemn Alpine scenery.

Nature is entwined with culture, offering a multiplicity of attractions, accompanied by the rediscovery of old flavours and the search for local food and DOC wines.

The Lago Iseo / Lovere area

Lovere is on the west shore of Lake Iseo or Sebino, formed by the River Oglio in the terminal section of Valcamonica. It is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy (see: I Borghi più belli d'Italia).

History - The ruins of a Celtic fort (4th-3rd centuries B.C.) bear witness of the antiquity of the settlement. The Romans colonised the area leaving their mark above all in a large necropolis. The fortified aspect of the town centre dates back to the Middle Ages. Lovere was part of the Serenissima Republic of Venice from 1442 to 1797.

Places of interest - Palazzo Tadini was built between 1821 and 1826 to house Conte Tadini's art collection. It is the seat of the Academy of Fine Arts; it also hosts a modern painting section and important temporary exhibitions.

Basilica di Santa Maria in Valvendra -(246X82 ft) built in the second half of the 15th century ; it is in Renaissance style with Venetian influences.

The Sanctuary - built in honour of the loverese B.Capitanio and V.Gerosa, the founders of the Congregation 'Sisters of Holy Child Mary'.

Chiesa di San Giorgio - built at the end of the 14th century, it houses a magnificent painting by the Flemish painter Jean de Herdt (1657) and the altar- piece attributed to Palma il Giovane.

Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II - Its trademarks are the Palace of the Podestà and the civic tower, on which a fresco of a lion, symbol of the Venetian rule, bears the date 1442.

Museum of Natural Sciences - founded in 1996 by the local council.

Porto Turistico - It is the largest marina on European lakes. It houses a multifunctional amphitheatre, where shows, exhibitions and events take place, besides the public library, sports clubs, bars and restaurants.

Swimming pools - Two indoor heated pools (one for children) and an outdoor one equipped with 2 aqua trails and 3 water slides. People can sunbathe on the green outdoor lawn. Bar service.

Cinema-teatro Crystal - The community-room Crystal is the second multifunctional theatre in the Province of Bergamo with 664-seat capacity and high quality of the shows.

“Lovely in Lovere” Antonella is a wonderful hostess. Her communication is top notch and quick. The house itself is wonderful; it is fully equipped for a stay of any length. There are more than enough dishes, flatware and cookware for anyone's needs. The shower in the lower floor has better water pressure but the main floor works well enough. The furniture is all comfortable (and I am very picky about beds!) and you can feel at home very quickly. We had our dogs with us and the space is great if you have pets. Everything is fenced in so your pets can have the run of the grounds. There are grape vines and plenty of trees and flowers so you can really feel close to nature. The only problem we had was with mosquitoes but insect repellant took care of that (they were not excessive, just a minor irritation). The views are outstanding and Lovere itself is a cute village with enough gelaterias and restaurants to suit anyone's tastes. “Great location with lake views, access to lakeshore and charming town” Casa Viola has a lovely terrace over looking lake Iseo which gets morning sunshine. House is comfortable and well equipped. Access to the marina and town is very easy on foot. Nice for evening promenades into the town for restaurants. Lovere is a bustling town with many shops and restaurants. Recommend the Restaurant La Campagnolo just at the bottom of the hill. A trip on the ferry to Pisonge on the opposite shore is a nice morning out (market on Friday). Overall a great base for exploring the lakes and mountains. Very friendly and helpful owners. Response: Thank you very much for your feedback

“Fabulous view, quaint accomodations” One of the allures of visiting Lovere is the beautiful Lake Iseo nestled in the mountains. The view of this gem from the Casa Viola is breathtaking and a sheer pleasure to wake up to and absorb while sipping a cup of coffe on the spacious deck overlooking the marina. The location is also just a 15 minute walk to the town center. The accomodations are delightful and spacious enough that one can enjoy some privacy generally not accorded in hotel situations. The kitchen was stocked with all the amenities necessary for us to prepare meals and relax at the dinner table. We found both bedrooms to be spacious and include a great deal of storage to unload the suitcase and feel at home. The two bathrooms are are a real plus (especially when traveling with a teenager). Overall, we found the Casa Viola to be delightful, quaint yet spacious, clean and well kept, and quite reasonable with a view to die for. We shall return. “Relax and unwind at Casa Viola” We visited "Casa Viola" on three separate occasions, and we loved it!! The accommodation is spacious with a well-appointed kitchen with all the equipment that could be needed on a self catering holiday. The living area is comfortable as are the 2 spacious bedrooms and the "cottage" would be suitable for a family stay. Outside, the patio provides stunning views over Lago Iseo, and provides a wonderful area to enjoy your barbecue! The garden, below the patio is large enough for children to play in. We were both teaching when we visited and therefore always had to visit during the Summer holidays which did mean that traffic could be heavy on the road into Lovere during the Italian holiday fortnight and particular care had to be taken when driving into or out of the drive.However, this small criticism should not detract from the accomodation's other fine qualities. Lovere, 10 minutes walk away (the climb back will keep you fit!) is a lovely, atmospheric Italian small town with plenty to see and do. Older teenagers might find it a bit "boring" with a rather limited night-life, with not much to do after 2.00a.m.!!!!!! (or after 11.30 p.m.for that matter!) There are several restaurants in Lovere although not all were to our taste, especially the one which served Angela donkey - a local speciality apparently. The Restaurant / Pizzeria at the bottom of the hill behind Casa Viola was our favourite and provided good value, although dining "al fresco" under the bamboo cover in a particularly sharp rainstorm was an interesting experience! Dining out in Italy is not cheap, and we frequently ate in (as I said, the kitchen facilities made this easy). We bought fresh food from the local market. The fish was fantastic, and we had some great barbecues. On our last visit to Casa Viola, we discovered Pisogne, the town you are looking at when sipping your evening glass of "Red" on the balcony. I immediately took to Pisogne. A little bit more down-market than Lovere perhaps, but with more bustle and plenty to see and explore. Pisogne also provides a station on the narrow gauge railway to the very underrated City of Brescia. But there are so many places to visit around the lake and beyond. The lake ferries provide a cheap way to visit the towns & villages on the shore of the lake. We twice cycled around the island of Monte Isola although a puncture on the second occasion made life a little harder in the 30degree sunshine. Personally, I think you need a car to get the most from a stay in Lovere, especially if you want to go to Milan, Brescia or Bergamo, although having said that there is a good transport network. One word of warning if you are driving- look out for "no Parking " signs. My Italian was not quite good enough & the fine was steep! If you intend to keep fit, there are some great walks locally. Try the one up to San Giovanni, behind the cottage, for example! In conclusion we had three great holidays at Casa Viola. The owner could not have done more to make us feel at home, and we can't wait to go again. Graham & Angela Douglas Response: Thank you very much for your feedback.
