The Aquitaine region
Aquitaine, capital city Bordeaux, is one of the great historic regions of France; it is also one of the largest and most varied regions of France, stretching from the foothills of the Massif Central in the north, to the Spanish border in the south,
Located in the South West of France, the Aquitaine region is renowned for its pleasant climate throughout the year and especially for its warm weather during the winter months. The region benefits from 2,200 sunshine hours a year,
Aquitaine is France's gastronomic heartland, and much of the country's finest ingredients are sourced here. Gascon cuisine in particular, is raved about all over France. For something to accompany your meal, then obviously you are spoilt for choice as there are over 5000 wine-producing chateaux from 57 different appellations,
There are many interesting towns - Biarritz with its light house and aristocratic buildings, the medieval town of Bayonne famous for its ham and chocolate. Hossegor for it's trendy surf vibe and international competitions and Capbretton for it's port and seafood retaurants.
There are several world class golf courses.
Labenne is a seaside resort located between Bayonne and Hossegor. It has been developed as a holiday destination as the coastline of les Landes is a long almost unbroken stretch of sandy beach, much of it virtually empty.
All along the road to the beach from the house are restaurants and shops. There are several camp sites which provides thermal treatments as well as a water park, an activity park, tennis courts and an equestrian centre where you can choose to ride on the sandy tracks of the pine forest or on the beach.
There are 40 kms of cycle track connecting the towns and running through the forest and along the Boudigau River.
There are many markets and festivals such as the stilt festival in Labenne as the area used to be marshland before the pine forests were planted in the 19th century when Napoleon 3rd dried out the land.
