Gascony: France's New Foodie Destination

by Condé Nast Traveler Jul 11, 2013 5:28 PM EDT

Not since the Three Musketeers unsheathed their swords centuries ago has Gascony seen this much excitement. To savor le dernier cri in French cooking, Michael Ruhlman heads to southwest France, where the rich, earthy gastronomy is newly alive and very well. En garde!

The gardens and surrounding area of The Farmhouse are very private and natural, the home sits alone and the only neighbors are over the hill or down the road. The front lawn is sprinkled with ancient oak trees, including a small pond to the side - a great place to relax and look over the vineyards. Each side of the property has woods for the shade in the summer, and the back lawn provides a nice place for soccer games or badmitten. Just past the two apple trees is a view of the sunflower fields...ahhh Gascony! There are forests beyond which are great for mushroom hunting or wildflower picking, and a nice bike ride could take you through Betbezer, on to Labastide d'Armagnac, a beautiful "place royale". Further along you will find beautiful villages Like Fources-the round bastide village known for its flower festivals. Nerac- where you could dine along the rivers edge and take a canal boat ride. Marciac- the famous jazz festival village, only 45 minutes drive! Further on still...The Pyrenees Mountains, and Basque villages such as Saint-Jean-de-Luz, famous Biarritz beach or Mimizan beach! We have a little of everything, and rest assured after a fun day of exploring, it is always nice to come back to peaceful Bouillin! Some of our previous guests have been artists, writers, but mostly families that want to let the children run and play, so the parents can lounge and relax! Welcome to our Gascony!

"For the ultimate rest and quiet"

“For the ultimate rest and quiet”

We have stayed at Le Bouillin for 4 very sunny weeks and really loved it. It is off road in the middle of corn, sunflower and wine fields.
Croaking of frogs in the night, the owls, the birds, and wild deers walking in the garden through the big oak trees. Plenty of shade, a cool house.
Indoors it is comfortable with good beds. The kitchen is a bit small but adequat. A bit bohemien shabby would describe the atmosphere of the house.
The only thing we missed was a swimming pool on the really hot days.
The supermarket in Cazaubon is not too big to get lost in and provides everything. But the best croissants you buy in Créon d'Armagnac at l'Alimentation shop.

Thanks so much for the review, Im glad you enjoyed your vacation at the Farmhouse. I like how you described the house, and hope to see you again!
best wishes,
