The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
Situated on the south east coast of mainland Spain, the Costa Blanca is renowned for its sandy white beaches and warm Mediterranean climate. Steeped in history and boasting beautiful mountain views, sweet fragrance orange groves and glistening waters, this picturesque Valencian province has something for everyone.
You certainly won't be short of things to explore on the Costa Blanca, whether you wish to delve into its history and culture or reveal the untold mysteries of the deep blue Mediterranean.
Alicante is a coastal university city with an impressive harbour and a tree lined promenade. One of its main attractions is its ancient mountaintop castle (Castillo de Santa Barbara), although keen shoppers will revel in its quaint boutiques and grand department stores.
The ancient town of Alicante extends itself along the curve of its busy port. The Romans called it Lucentum - The City of Light - quite appropriately for the acknowledged tourist capital of the White Coast, which has supplied generations of visitors with their first enticing impression of Spain.
Alicante, like most of the towns on the Costa Blanca, hosts an array of restaurants and bars with prices that won't break the budget, so you certainly won't go hungry here!
La Zenia / Laguna Golf, La Zenia area
The apartment is located close to La Zenia, which is in the area of Orihuela Costa and is less than a 10 minute drive south of Torrevieja and on the main bus and taxi route. It has a very multi-cultural feel as many people from other countries now live in this area. This area is a favourite for British ex-pats, consequently, the shops, bars and restaurants originate from many nationalities to provide food to suit all tastes - from the native Spanish to Italian, French, German, Chinese, Indian, Korean, Scandinavian, Argentinian, Hungarian, Mexican cuisine, etc.
Carrefour, Mercadona, Mas Y Mas and Aldi supermarkets, along with Banks and numerous restaurants are within a few minutes drive of the property, with a local supermarket and bars within 200 metres.
The EU blue flag beaches are located a few minutes drive at La Zenia, Playa Flamenca and Cabo Roig, where there is also a marina. There are jet-ski’s, a banana boat and pedalo’s in the summer months, as well as the usual “bars on the beach” plus other bars and restaurants on the coast road and La Zenia Hotel. Just around the headland is Playa Flamenca beach plus more shops, restaurants and the main Post Office.
There is also a first class facility called Orihuela Costa Resort. Built around a small hotel it welcomes visitors not staying at the hotel to use its excellent facilities. There is magnificent pool with large sunbathing terrace and loungers, extensive lawn area, tennis courts, basket ball area and gymnasium. The pool bar serves drinks, snacks and light meals. The superb air-conditioned restaurant caters for many more people than this small hotel accommodates, and is popular with locals and visitors in self-catering. This is an all day facility and if you fancy breakfast out some mornings they bake delicious croissants on the premises.
The Flamenca Beach Commercial Centre, the largest in the area with about 60 bars and restaurants, and nearby are familiar supermarkets such as Lidl, Aldi and Supercor – the “Harrods” food hall of Spain.
There is a popular market on every Saturday morning, within walking distance of the apartment, at Playa Flamenca.
5 minutes drive to golf courses of Villamartin, Campoamor and Las Ramblas.
Sports: Golf, cycling, diving, fishing, horse riding, paragliding, roller blading, sailing, surfing, swimming, tennis, walking, water skiing, wind-surfing, ten-pin bowling, jet ski, scuba diving, aqua park, sports complex, go-karting
We recommend a car to get the best out of any area but if all you want to do is relax, take in the sun and have meal and a drink in the evening, either in the property or in the nearby commercial centres, it is not essential due to the numerous facilities within walking distance.
A bus ride away is the local town of Torrevieja which has, in recent years, grown to be one of the most popular and important centres on the Mediterranean sea for residential tourism. No "package" tours come to this area. Torrevieja's seafront offers a lot of restaurants, tapas bars and street cafes on the very wide promenade which are popular for the “Spanish evening stroll”. If you simply wish to relax and soak up the rays, then head for one of Torrevieja's sandy white beaches which have been awarded the EC's "Blue Flag" status so you can ensure safe bathing and quality recreation facilities for you and your family. There are beaches at Playa de los Locos, Cala del Palangre, Playa del Cura, Paseo Marítimo Juan Aparicio and Playa de los Náufragos.
Take advantage of Torrevieja's magnificent Friday market which sells everything from fruit and vegetables to housing accessories and gifts. There is an indoor market in the town centre open daily for fish, vegetables and meat. Fresh seafood and fish can be bought daily at the port of Torrevieja. In fact, why not make a day of it and "shop until you drop" in Torrevieja's many boutiques or the new Habernas shopping centre with H&M, C&A, Zara, Puma, etc. For the kids, we have ten pin bowling, amusement centre, sports centre with Olympic sized pool, etc.
Each month Torrevieja celebrates a different Festival, or 'Fiesta' with a riot of colour, tradition, music and dance, including 'la Habanera' a special rejoicing of Torrevieja's sailing history and early salt trade days with Cuba. 'Ancient tower' is its translation and it is on the north side of the town overlooking the sea with recently restored gardens.
Local to Torrevieja are two large natural saltwater lagoons, known as "las Salinas", the largest in Europe. The concentration of salt in these picturesque lagoons helps to draw the moisture out of the air. This, combined with the very low annual rainfall, creates the unique microclimate with low humidity. With most days being sunny, and with an average temp of 18 degrees centigrade, make this area ideal for sufferers of rheumatism, arthritis and asthma. There is also a nature reserve which is an absolute haven for avian wildlife: egrets flamingos, purple herons, stilts.
