About the home

'L'Etoile de Mer' is a recently-constructed, four-bedroom, three-bathroom, detached villa, with a private, heated pool and wooded gardens front and rear. Located on the edge of La Tranche-sur-mer in the charming hamlet of La Terriere, it is within easy walking or cycling distance of a superb beach and also the shops, bars and restaurants of the town. Beautiful forest walks and cycle trails are on the doorstep, leading to the beaches and beyond. Several nearby beaches to choose from suitable for families, sun worshippers and surfing dudes alike! Our pool has lovely surroundings and a shaded terrace and features a motorised and concealed security cover as well as being fully fenced and gated to keep your little ones safe, while you relax!

The house is built on two floors surrounding the rear garden and swimming pool which can be viewed from all the rooms. It features two double bedrooms each with their own en-suite. One of the double bedrooms is located on the ground floor with direct access to the exterior and as the house has level access throughout the ground floor, it is very suitable for groups including members with limited mobility. There is a family bathroom complete with full-size bath and shower on the first floor to serve the other bedrooms. Large dining room with separate kitchen area, and cosy sitting room both with direct access to the covered terrace and pool area. The interior is simple and tastefully modern and all furniture and fittings are only four or five years old.

The pool is surrounded by large sunbathing terraces and sandy areas shaded by trees. It is securely fenced off from the house area and, in addition, there is an automatic cover to keep heat in and provide extra security. Gently sloping steps lead into the water at the shallow end, and there is a diving deck at the deep end where there is also a shower and separate WC and handbasin. Another great feature is the large, covered terrace with dining table and barbecue and space for table tennis, even if it is raining! Plenty of off-road parking for four or more vehicles at the front and a large garage for storing bikes, surfboards, etc.. We supply a number of bikes and various items of beach gear for your use.

Conditions

Changeover day is generally Saturday, other days by arrangement. 25% deposit required to confirm booking, remainder 12 weeks before holiday. Refundable security deposit required. We prefer to let peak season in minimum two-week slots. Payment may also be made in Euros.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Vendee region

The Vendee is blessed with a sunny and warm microclimate resulting in similar sunshine hours to mediterranean resorts, making it a favourite place for beach and nature lovers of all nationalities, but particularly the French. The coastal towns remain relatively unspoilt and La Rochelle, in particular, is a beautiful old port, steeped in history. Inland, there is much to see, varying from the 'Venise Vert' (green Venice) with its canals and old towns to castles and amusement parks such as the 'Puy de Fou' with its famous historical enactments. Cycling in the area is a delight with many waymarked and often traffic-free cycle trails up and down the coast, and inland.

The La Tranche sur Mer area

La Tranche-sur-Mer is a very typical, unspoilt, family-friendly seaside town with a very 'French' atmosphere. In the summer months the town organises many activities, mostly free, including live performances ranging from folk and jazz to rock bands. There is an excellent twice-weekly market and a wide variety of good restaurants, bars and shops. In La Terriere itself there is a baker, bar and hotel/restaurant. Our local beach 'La Terriere Plage' is, without doubt, the best in the area. It is well-supervised, has a large car park and several snack bars and two surf schools. The beach is huge and it is easy to get away from the crowds, if you wish. There is an official 'clothing optional' area a short distance from the main beach.

La Tranche is ideally located on the west coast of France, far enough south to enjoy a dramatically different climate but close enough to be within reasonable travel distance for families. The nearest channel ferry port is St.Malo at 3.5 hours drive time with Cherbourg, Caen, Roscoff and Le Havre being up to 1.5 hours more. It is also possible to travel from Calais within a day.
Travel arrangements by a combination of train and bus are quite straightforward, although some of our guests have preferred to take a taxi for the last stage to La Tranche itself. Bringing a car is not essential as everything is within easy cycling or walking distance. If our bikes do not suit you, others can be hired locally. Cars can also be hired locally for day trips, even from the the local supermarket!
The nearest airport is at La Rochelle which is about 50 minutes drive and is well-served by budget flights from the UK including; Bristol, Southampton, Birmingham, Manchester and London Stanstead. There are also budget flights to Nantes which is about 1.5 hours drive. Cars can be hired at the airport or again, it is possible to connect with public transport.
If you are a fit and keen cyclist there is a wonderful route from Roscoff or St.Malo which follows mostly canal towpaths to the Loire followed by coastal cycle tracks to La Tranche. This takes about three days and overnight stays can be made at B&B, campsites or hotels on the way.

“Large , modern villa in a beautiful location with activities for all the family close by.” We had a wonderful holiday in La Tranche sur Mer and loved the villa in La Terriere which was absolutely ideal for two families with six teenagers between us! The weather was lovely with perfect conditions for surfing and bodyboarding at the local beach. We mainly chilled out around the pool and beach with a couple of trips to La Rochelle and La Sable D'Olonne (it was hard trying to galvanise the troops to leave the immediate area!) The house was beautifully equipped - its so rare not to feel that there's nothing else you require! The use of the bikes and beach equipment was particularly good for us as we didn't need to take bikes for everyone but we could all go out together. All in all a wonderful villa, pool and location and we definitely hope to return!

“All holiday rentals should be like this.” We had a great family holiday (6 adults & 3 children). This is a well equipped, modern property in a quiet location. Lots to do at the house:- Swimming pool, bicycles, table tennis, games, info & maps of the area, UK freeview (no idea how you get UK freeview in France) etc. Easy access to miles of beaches, forest cycle/walking routes. Nearest town 5mins drive, LaRochelle 1hrs drive, LaSables 40mins drive.

'Thank you so much for letting us use your villa, which along with its location really made a superb break. The villa itself was fantastic, perfectly laid out, especially the outdoor terrace and pool, which was a welcome sight every morning. Such a beautiful location, the beaches were wonderful. We spent most days on the beach or lazing by the pool, but we did venture into La Tranche sur Mer, and that was a very pleasant surprise. We had a lovely meal, and my sons loved the rock pools... The best days out we had were at Puy de Fou and the Zoo at Sables d'Olonne' Mr&Mrs G - W.Sussex.
