The Costa Calida/Murcia region
The Murcia Region is a privileged land, a perfect example of quality of life in the Mediterranean. Its warm, mild temperatures (with an annual average of 21º C) and low rainfall make it an oasis of well-being in any season. The weather endows Murcia with a distinct flavour, making it a region full of life and colour, where springtime seems eternal.A land where you and your family will be able to enjoy over 300 days of sunshine a year. Murcia´s abundant clear and sunny days give the Region a highly distinctive, spectacular and warm Mediterranean light.
The Murcia Region, a rendezvous between two seas. Outstanding beaches of soft sand, clean water and dazzling sunsets.
Known as the "Warm Coast", the Murcia Region shoreline runs just over 250 km and is shared by two seas: the Minor Sea (Mar Menor) and the Mediterranean. The landscape is peppered with breathtaking cliffs, heavenly secluded beaches of endless white sand, lively seaports and natural coves of crystal-clear waters. Many of these areas are part of the Region´s network of Protected Natural Lands. A noteworthy geographical feature is La Manga, a strip of coastline that encloses and separates the 170 km2 Minor Sea lagoon from the Mediterranean, connected only by channels or gorges. The Minor Sea´s warm waters have always been renowned for their health benefits.Areas of ecological interest are also found, such as the San Pedro del Pinatar salt flats and the Calblanque Natural Park.
Reservoirs, rivers and two natural parks make the Murcia Region a clean and highly appealing area for tourism.
The inland areas of the Murcia Region offer a very rich heritage of natural landscapes and reserves. Dreamlike places that can be enjoyed by both those seeking peace and fresh air, as well as others who wish to supplement an intensive, active tourism offering with the respite of recreational areas. Those looking to enjoy nature will find an activity that best matches their tastes: hiking trails, hill-climbing, on horseback or by foot. We´d like to recommend two not-to-be-missed alternatives. They are the Sierra Espuña and El Valle Natural Parks, which all can enjoy, whether seeking activities or relaxation.
La Torre Golf Resort / Polaris World, La Torre area
La torre resort itself offers a huge amount of activities/places to go for all the family including, golf, tennis, family entertainment, swimming, children's play area;s, restaurants, bars, supermarket, free bus service to the other resorts and lots lots more.....
Local activities, beaches, days out include:
BEACHES Along the coast of the Mar Menor and Costa Calida are numerous sandy beaches, lively ports and deserted coves with impressive cliffs and crystal clear water, appealing for families, couples and sports enthusiasts alike. The water is very clean and clear, with many beaches being awarded the BLUE FLAG. There are two distinct parts to the coast. The east-facing part is dominated by the Mar Menor ("Little Sea"), a huge natural lagoon over 10 miles long by 6 miles wide. The waters of the Mar Menor are 5 degrees warmer than in the Mediterranean Sea, and also much shallower with a maximum depth of 7m. Great care and attention is paid to litter collection, and lifeguards/police patrols operate in popular spots. The long, thin strip of land between the lagoon and the Mediterranean is La Manga ("The sleeve") and the whole warm lagoon is lined with clean, gently sloping beaches and pretty, low-rise resort towns. It forms the perfect water sports environment, hence the wide choice of marinas, and is dotted with dramatic islands.
San Pedro Del Pinatar & Lo Pagán Starting from the north and south, you will see the salt marshes and man-made 'pans' where salt is harvested, now a protected Nature Park. Migrating birds use the marshes as a stop-over and bird-watching is popular. The mineral content of the mud makes it a sought-after remedy or conditioner, especially for the skin, and there are several therapy spas. Lo Pagan has 2 sandy beaches separated by a marina and fishing harbour. A long promenade stretches to the rear of both of these beaches and joins up with the next resort – Santiago de la Ribera.
Santiago de la Ribera sits on the shores of the Mar Menor directly in front of San Javier and the two are closely linked. Home to a superb marina area and some of the best restaurants in the region. Here you will find a ferry that travels across the Mar Menor to the Tomas Maestre Marina on the La Manga Strip every 2 hours.
Los Alcázares & Los Narejos These two neighbours sit right at the centre point of the Mar Menor coast and have an excellent range of modern facilities, including a sizeable marina. They also have a long history, both as fishing ports and as spa towns. Los Alcazares has a promenade that is over 4km long stretching from the airport right through to the marina at the southern end. There are many beach bars and restaurants that line the beach. The beaches at Playa Los Narejos and Playa del Espejo have won the famous Q Awards for their high standards.
Los Urrutias A relatively new resort, Los Urrutias has almost a mile of golden beach with good facilities, enhanced by an unusual offshore marina in a hexagonal shape. Behind the beach is a modern, spaciously laid out town with an attractive promenade and public spaces. The coast either side is protected land, preserving the quality of the environment.
Los Nietos Divided into an 'old town' just off the coast and a newer resort area with a very good beach, Los Nietos is another Mar Menor town with a popular marina.
Mar de Cristal Separated from Los Nietos by a small river, Mar de Cristal is a compact and friendly little resort with three good beach areas and a new, pretty promenade with bars and restaurants. A good sized marina adds to the charm.
Playa Honda & Playa Paraiso At the very southern end of the Mar Menor, these two beach areas have seen quite a bit of expansion in the last few years and have evolved into fully fledged resorts. With the hills of the Calablanque Nature Park behind, the protected Marchamalo salt flats to the side and the whole length of the Mar Menor in front though, the area is set to mature nicely.
Cabo de Palos Across from the Marchamalo salt flats, Cabo de Palos is a small point of land jutting out into the Mediterranean. Naturally equipped with many small bays and inlets, it has always been a centre for fishing and the main port area is one of the prettiest on the entire coast. Using fresh local fish and vegetables, some of the best restaurants in the area line the traditional quayside and charge amazingly reasonable prices.
La Manga Strip Mostly only 200 to 400 yards wide, the La Manga strip separates the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean. With beaches on both sides, countless bars and restaurants, several marinas (Tomás Maestre being the largest), clubs, casinos and even a 9 golf course.
Calblanque Calblanque is an area of exceptional beauty and tranquility with fine golden, sandy beaches and clear, sparkling waters. It stretches along 13 km of the coast and consists of beaches, peaceful coves, ancient sand dunes, stunning rock formations, beautiful walking trails and pine forests. The peaceful beaches are one of the main attractions - the most popular being Playa Calblanque, Playa Larga and Playa de las Cañas. There are many peaceful coves to explore and due to the remoteness of the area you may even find yourself alone in one of these coves.
Mazarrón & Puerto de Mazarrón West of Cartagena, a wild and craggy coast has kept development to a minimum and it's not until the huge bay of Mazarrón that there is much sign of activity. Within the bay itself and immediately around are 30 beaches and a number of small but growing resorts, some of which will be linked by a new 6-mile seafront promenade.
Águilas West of Mazarrón is almost 15 miles of undeveloped coast. Just before the border with Almería though is a beautiful series of 4 bays and over 30 coves, with a crescent of mountains behind, between which sits the town of Águilas. Established as a port in Roman times and protected by a fine 1597 castle that survives to this day, it is a classically friendly and relaxed southern Spanish town where strangers become friends in record time. Home to great natural beauty, a spectacular carnival and a perfect lifestyle, Águilas is not to be missed.
Playa cala Cortina - Cartagena This is one of my favourite beaches/coves. You will find mostly Spanish on this beach and it is particularly packed on a Saturday so would advise going on a weekday as a lot quieter. It has an amazing fish restaurant ‘Mare Bravas’ serving the most amazing dishes with fish caught that day. Follow signs to Cartagena then take the turning to the ‘peurto’. Continue to follow signs to ‘peurto’ until you arrive at a roundabout where you can see the entrance to port. At the roundabout take the exit after the port and follow the road up until you go through a tunnel. Parking for the beach is on the right hand side after the tunnel. A real gem!
EXCURSIONS Cartagena A This historic Roman town and natural port is full of stunning architecture, with many old buildings, galleries and museums to explore. The old town is enclosed by a wall with 8 gates called 'Muralla del Mar'. Take a guided tour on a bus around Cartagena's historic sites, including a stop at the Concepcion Castle and enjoy the views at the top of the panoramic lift. The remains of a Roman ampitheatre were discovered in 1987, which is open to the public. Opened in 1982, the Naval Museum is a must for sea lovers, exhibiting remains of ship wrecks and a section of a Roman merchant ship. The wide promenade at the port is lined with bars and restaurants for you to relax in, or take a boat trip and sail though the city port to view the lighthouses of Navidad and Curra and the Isle of Escombreras. You may wish to purchase ceramic, glass and textile wares at the Crafts centre or visit the many shops in Cartagena, including El Corte Ingles and Zara.
Los Alcazares A typical Spanish seaside town is situated along the Mar Menor and boasts miles of sandy beaches. Take a wander or bike ride along the 2 mile promenade and stop and relax at one of the many bars and restaurants overlooking the sea. The town has all the necessary amenities you require and new restaurants and bars are continually opening. A really friendly town with Las Velas Commercial centre with a cinema showing original version films with Spanish subtitles.
Murcia The capital lies next to the Segura River, with its impressive architecture and Spanish appeal. Take a wander through the charming, winding cobbled walkways lined with shops that surround the Cathedral. Stop at one of the many cafes, bars and restaurants located in the charming plazas and squares to watch the world go by or be entertained by local artists. Explore the many cultural attractions including the ‘Cathedral de Santa Maria' with its 96m tower and 25 bells. Artistic and historic wealth is on display at the city’s museums, such as the Archaeological Museum, the Fine Arts Museum or the Salzillo Museum. The Casino is certainly worth a special visit for the fantastic stained glass and Arabic tiles, combined with colonial feel and good coffee. The Jardin Florida Blanca is a great place to escape the heat of summer under the shade of its well-established rubber trees.
Lorca A picturesque city described as 'the baroque city' is dominated by the hilltop castle where you can travel back in time and encounter the roman world. This is both a fun and educational day that both kids and adults will enjoy. There are many things to discover, learn and interact with. Don’t forget to take your camera with you as there are lots of photo opportunities in the castle and the magnificent view looking over Lorca. It has a wealth of tourist attractions for you to explore including museums, churches, roman villas, monuments and works of art. Wander through the winding streets and visit the squares and plazas where fiestas take place throughout the year.
Sierra Espuna Sierra Espuna is a Parque Regional, which is right in the centre of the Murcia region, between the rivers Pliego and Guadalentin and a must for walkers and nature lovers. It is actually an artificially planted forestry project which was started in 1891 to combat the deforestation which resulted in erosion and flash floods. There are a variety of cycle routes and walks to discover the different varieties of wildlife including wild goats and lynxes. In the winter the peaks of Espuna, Pedro Lopez and Morron Chico are covered in snow. The wilderness area of dramatic peaks and pine forests offers scenic drives, serious climbing, superb walking and great cycle routes.
San Pedro Del Pinatar A quiet tranquil village and has a beautiful long beach. Salinas y Arenales is an important wetland area, famous for its bird wildlife and in particular flamingos that gather before migrating to warmer climates. Wander along the walkways around the salt lakes which lead to beautiful dunes and sandy beaches with crystal clear waters. Adjoining San Pedro, is Lo Pagan with its therapeutic mud baths, known for its minerals known to be effective against arthritis and rheumatism
Cabo De Palos A small pretty fishing village jutting out into the Mediterranean, South of La Manga. It is a popular tourist destination, with its traditional style marina. Test the local produce at on of the many excellent fish restaurants that line the marina. Take a lovely walk up to the 19th century lighthouse with views over the Mediterranean and the spectacular mountains. In the summer, the night-life is buzzing until the early hours of the morning, with many disco bars in the Las Dunas area
Guardamar National Park The smallest national park in Spain is located just a short drive away. The 800 hectares of pine wood forest just behind the beach of Guardamar del Segura, is widely known as the ‘dunes of Guardamar’. A really lovely Spanish town with shopping, restaurants etc. If you can make it to Guardamar, get up the hill behind the city and visit the ruins of the former castle. The ruins are not much to see, but the view is breathtaking. You should be able to see as far as Alicante to the north and Torrevieja to the south.
Mud Baths The water and the mud in the Mar Menor have a high concentration of salt which has been found to carry healing powers for people suffering arthritis, rheumatism, tendonitis, joint ailments, and skin ailments as well as enhancing blood flow around the body.
