The Costa Calida/Murcia region
REGION The Murcia region is an unspoilt area in the south east of Spain. The cities of Murcia and Cartegena are both steeped in history. Take a leisurely stroll around the city of Cartagena and you can feel the history seeping from every wall. Cartagena was founded in ancient times around 227BC by the Carthaginians. In 209BC the city was conquered by the Romans and given the name Carthago Nova (“new carthage”). It was re-conquered in later years by the Byzantines and by the Arabs who all left their mark on the city. Amongst the places to visit from these ancient times are the Roman theatre from the 1st century BC, the Punic ramparts (227BC), the Litema (the ancient lighthouse) from the Arab presence and the Augusteum one of the best archaeological sites in the city, again Roman and from the 1st century BC - thought to have been the meeting place for the priesthood of the cult of Emperor Augustus. Taking a stroll through some of Murcia's green and tranquil squares is a delight. The Plaza del Cardinal Belluga is at the heart of the old city and lies directly in front of the great cathedral. One can sit in the shade of the orange trees or sip coffee at one of the convenient bars and simply admire the beauty and splendour of your surroundings. It is pleasant just to wander down the narrow streets of this quarter in peaceful solitude. Murcia Cathedral has many Renaissance and Baroque elements, although its interior is basically Gothic. It was created in 1394, in the place where an Arab mosque once stood. It has a tower 95 metres high which took over two hundred years to be built and in which main architects were involved.
BEACHES Come to Murcia, in south east Spain, and enjoy a few unforgettable days on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Countryside, entertainment, sports, culture and excellent year-round weather come together on the Costa Cálida, an ideal holiday destination for all the family. From the fishing village of Águilas to the broad beaches of San Pedro del Pinatar, there is a wide variety of options on this part of the Spanish coast. You will notice the variety and beauty of the local landscapes. In the space of a few kilometres you will find cliffs, tiny coves, long sandy beaches of internationally recognised quality, protected, unspoilt inlets... clean, blue seawater dominates the whole area, and is the perfect setting for swimming and for water sports such as kayaking, sailing, snorkelling, jet skiing, fishing, windsurfing, scuba diving, water skiing, kite surfing and rowing. Just 15 minutes drive from the resort is the Mar Menor [small sea] a huge 135 sq km salt-water lagoon separated from the Mediterranean by the 24 km long La Manga strip. The mineral rich waters are said to have therapeutic effects coupled with calm waters makes this an ideal haven for all to enjoy. This is, without a doubt, an excellent way to get the most out of all the options on offer with seaside tourism. Don't think twice: Murcia's beaches await you with open arms. Why don't you come and see for yourself ?
RESTAURANTS Murcia has sophisticated fine dining through to "Fish and Chips", Indian and Chinese restaurants and of course many different Spanish restaurants. International cuisine of all types. Paella in abundance with other delicious Spanish favourites widely available. Seafood is excellent most of which is caught locally. Where-ever you go a culinary feast with warm and friendly service awaits you.
SHOPPING The cities of Murcia and Cartegena both have excellent shopping facilities. At San Javier, just 20 mins drive away is Dos Mares shopping mall, it includes ten pin bowling, cinema and an extensive food hall. In Murcia is Nueva Condomina, a shopping mall with over 200 shops, it also provides ten pin bowling, cinema and a wide variety of restaurants. Check out the Costa Calida weekly market guide if it's bargains you are looking for, most villages hold a market at least once a week. The markets of the Murcia region have everything. Bright, colourful and full of local produce. Visit any of the markets and you can buy everything from art to strawberries. On Sunday buy your rotiserrie chicken and all the vegetables you could wish for. The fields of the Murcia region supplies major supermarkets throughout Spain and also the UK. Enjoy the local produce straight from the field. Where else can you buy a kilo of strawberries for a Euro!
GOLF Golf connoisseurs will appreciate that Murcia is becoming the best region to play Golf as over 15 golf courses are now available with a further 30 golf courses under construction.
La Torre Golf Resort / Polaris World, La Torre area
The resort provides all the amenities you will require - bars and restaurants, a beautiful clubhouse, supermarket, bank, beauty centre and more.
There are regular shuttle buses running to other Polaris resorts.
THEME PARKS 20 minutes drive away is Terra Natura Murcia, a new-generation wildlife park where you can discover the “Zooimmersion” experience – a new concept in habitat design which will enable you to come into contact with the animals as if there were no barriers between you – at least, no visible ones! The 165,445 m² of the Murcia park are divided into two themed areas: the African Savannah and the Iberian Peninsula. You can see more than 300 animals from 50 different species, three of which are in serious danger of extinction. The nearest water park is Terra Aqua Murcia, again just 20 mins away, it's bigger brother Terra Aqua Benidorm is one hours drive away but well worth the journey as the park is generally larger and offers the chance to go swimming with sharks!
FIESTAS Fiestas are serious business in Murcia. Preparations start weeks in advance (depending upon the scale of the celebrations intended) with roles assigned for many of the villagers. Usually the festivities are spread over a week or even more, with a programme of activities planned. In many bars you’ll find a guide to these activities along with lots of adverts from local traders. For larger fiestas, the lights will go up in the streets a few weeks ahead, and often a marquee will be erected in the town square. Sometimes there will be competitions – football, sport, fruit and vegetable growing and, of course, the paella cooking. Never expect evening festivities to begin much before 10pm or finish much earlier than 6am.
FOOTBALL Football fans ....... check out Real Murcia, they play in the Spanish league, the new purpose built stadium is located right next to Neuva Condominia.
FERRIES, BOAT TRIPS/HIRE Many boat trips are available from the port of Thomas Meastro, which is located approx. 14 km along the La Manga strip. Yacht and Power boat charters are available including tuition to gain RYA qualifications. Hire boats (with or without skipper) and explore the many islands surrounding the Mar Menor and also within it. Every concievable water pleasure is available, Waterskiing, Banana boat rides, Jet-Ski, Wake-Boarding, Kneeboarding, kite surfing and many more.
HORSE RIDING Located near to La Manga golf, you can venture on a 13km journey across terraced fields and through the natural beaches of Calblanque. On your journey you may want to stop of and visit the coves of Cabo Negrete. The riding stables have been established for many years and are run by an experienced team. A variety of horses, trecks and routes are available. Take a horse and explore the beautiful La Manga countryside.
NATURE A wide range of natural parks can be visited in the Region of Murcia: from salty sea side flats to high mountains. Sierra Espuña has more than 178 million square metres among the municipalities of Totana, Alhama de Murcia and Mula. More than two hundred protected forms of life, from eagles or owls to different types of endemic flora, live in this lush park with breath-taking mountains. The Carrascoy y El Valle Regional Natural Park covers an area of more than 167 million square metres. Protected species living in the area include the Spanish royal owl (Bubo Bubo). The Sierra de la Pila mountains conform a 78 million square metres Regional Natural Park, distributed among the towns of Abarán, Blanca, Molina de Segura and Fortuna. Different birds of prey, like eagles, falcons or owls among many others have their home in this mountains. The Sierra del Carche mountains comprise more than six million square metres of protected land. Here eagles, owls and other birds of prey can be observed. The Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro park is in San Pedro del Pinatar, covering more than eight million square metres. Dunes and salty flats conform this area of great interest for bird watchers and nature lovers in general. Migrating birds like flamingos create also wonderful views when stopping by each semester. The Calblanque, Monte de las Cenizas y Peña del Águila is one of the most impressive parks in the region, mainly for its completely unspoilt coast, a treasure to be enjoyed by all who visit. And last but not least, the Cabo Cope-Puntas de Calnegre park area is shared by Águilas and Lorca, comprising part of the Lorca coastal area. Both flora and fauna (including the Spanish Moorish Turtle, Testudo graeca) are very interesting in this coast-side Natural Park.
SCUBA DIVING Cabo de Palos is just 30 kilometres from the town of Cartagena. It is a peninsula, 400 metres wide, dotted with quiet coves and lapped by the crystal-clear sea. The main attraction here, however, is in the sea itself. 2.5 miles away from the coast is Hormiga Island. The sea bed has been designated Integral Marine Reserve for its exceptional beauty and good state of conservation, considered one of the best scuba diving sites in Spain. Here you will find reefs and coral deep underwater, as well as the remains of shipwrecks and sunken boats: a real adventure for scuba fans.
KARTING Located near to the entrance of the La Manga strip and Cabo de Palos, this not one of those small cheap courses you see on many Spanish seaside resorts but a large professional complex called Go Kart La Manga. There are three different circuits - Adult, Junior and Infant. There is lots of terraced seating. You can enjoy the wonderful views of the Mar Menor and a panoramic view of the circuits.
SKI-ING / SNOWBOARDING Many people only associate Spain with sand and sun and are surprised to find that Spain also offers a wide range of winter sports. Spain's number one location for winter sports, the Sierra Nevada is located approximately 2 hours drive away. Located above Granada, it has the best snow and the longest season in the country. The ski resort Pradollano in the Sierra Nevada which hosted the 1996 World Alpine Ski Championships holds the distinction of being Europe’s most southerly ski resort (you can see Morocco on a clear day!) It’s an ideal resort for those seeking a taste of Spain combined with all the services and facilities you’d expect to find in popular Alpine ski villages. Sierra Nevada has 61km of ski slopes with 45 pistes and 6 off-piste routes. There are 2 cable cars, 12 chair lifts and 5 ski lifts. You can even ski at night at weekends and bank holidays. Night skiing was introduced in 1994 with lighting along the El Rio slope (3km/545 vertical drop). If you have never been to Sierra Nevada because you haven't got the essential gear, then that's no longer a valid excuse for everything you need can be hired on a daily basis. If your excuse is that you can't ski then forget that too for there is no shortage of schools that will assist everyone from beginners to experts. With the resort being just 30 minutes away from the city of Granada, nowhere else in the world can you be playing golf in the sun then within such a short time, be skiing or snow-boarding at a top resort. As well as snowboarding Sierra Nevada offers many other winter spotrs including cross-country skiing, artistic skiing (ballet, jumps, moguls), telemark skiing, trekking and adventure skiing.
