The Murcia region
The Murcia region
Murcia is a region with one of the greatest annual number of sunny days, an average temperature of 21º C, and 250 km of shoreline along two seas: the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor. It's environment full of contrasts, with high mountains, southern basins with semi-desert landscapes, and beautiful beaches such as those of Calblanque, La Manga, and Mazarrón.
Murcia´s coastline is very diverse, with both rough and serene waters. The Murcia Region coastline contains a large number of areas of great environmental interest: dunes, salt flats, wetlands... many of them are Natural Protected Areas. In many areas you can find flora and fauna species such as the Phoenician Juniper, a native tree variety, and the "Fartet", a minute and very unusual fish.
An area of great cultural and historical interest make Murcia the perfect region to visit and enjoy outdoor activities such as water sports in the Mar Menor, mountain exploring, hiking and golf.
Six National Tourism Interest festivals, and 31 Regional Tourism Interest festivals are enjoyed by both tourist and locals.
On the last Sunday in January, with the Cuadrillas de Barranda Festiva, whilst February is Carnival month, with famous dance troupe parades, and costume contests in communities such as Águilas, Cartagena, and Cabezo de Torres.
Holy Week has marvellous processions in Cartagena, Lorca, Jumilla and Murcia. It is also the time of the Tamborradas (processions with drummers) that accompany the Mula and Moratalla celebrations, and the Murcia Spring Festivals. A highlight of the latter festivals is Bando de la Huerta Day, on which many Murcians, in traditional attire, march through the city. Another Holy Week festival is the Entierro de la Sardina, which is Murcia´s other principal festival together with Bando. This is a pagan festival of mythology and fire, with dance troupes, brass bands, entertainment groups, floats and fireworks.
May features Moore and Christian parades in many of the region´s towns, such as Abanilla and Alhama, and the massively attended performances of the Santísima y Vera Cruz Festival in Caravaca.
The summer sees many Virgen del Carmen seafarer´s processions in many of the coastal towns. It is also the season of cultural festivals such as those of San Javier, La Unión, Los Alcázares, Lorca, and the Wine Harvest Festival in Jumilla.
In autumn Murcia sees the September Fair, with Moore and Christian parades, and the Mediterranean Folklore Festival. Legions of Romans and Carthaginians group on the streets of Cartagena, like in ancient historical times. During 10 days, Spain's important historical moments are performed outdoors.
During September there are also the religious pilgrimages of Romerías, featuring Virgen de la Fuensanta, the patron of Murcia, and Virgen de la Esperanza in Calasparra.
At the end of autumn, festivals are more abundant in the north of the region, with the Fiestas de la Purísima in Yecla, amid the thunder of the harquebuses. The Cuadrillas de Ánimas (troupes) and the Campanas de Auroras ("Dawn Bells" music group) announce the beginning of Christmas by carol singing along orchard roads. The Region also enjoys at this time the nativity scene contests, and the large parades on Epiphany Day.

"Great location to relax and unwind"
Accomodation was perfect for family with 3 children. We had no problems booking the apartment and the owner provided us with all relevant information. We arrived into Alicante but the resort was easily located and we had an excellant meet and greet at the apartment. The local beaches are a short drive away but the resort pools were numerous and of a high standard. We had a great roof terrace which had the sun all day and was perfect for sunset meals at night. We have already recommended it to our friends and would highly recommend it to others
