BookThe Murcia region
The Costa Calida has a hot Mediterranean climate with high average temperatures and low rainfall, giving it its name ‘Warm Coast’.
The Costa Calida comprises approximately 250 kilometres of Mediterranean coastline located in the province of Murcia. It extends roughly from El Mojon in the north to the resort of Aguilas in the south, the region to the north is called the Costa Blanca (White Coast) and the region to the south is known as the Costa Almeria.
The waters of the Mar Menor are renowned for being some 5 degrees warmer than the surrounding Mediterranean Sea, this makes the beaches around the Mar Menor very popular with holidaymakers.
The most notable feature of its northern coastline is the huge saltwater lagoon known as the Mar Menor (Little Sea) which has an area of approximately 170 km2 and is the largest of its kind in Europe. The Mar Menor is separated from the rest of the Mediterranean by a narrow strip of land known as La Manga (The Sleeve). La Manga is one of the best known sports resorts along the coastline of Spain and is some 22 km long and in places no more than 100 metres wide.
One of the towns located on the Mar Menor, Lo Pagan, is famous for its healing mud baths and people visit from all over the world to try out its beneficial effects. The mud baths at Lo Pagan are a protected area and are free for everyone to use and enjoy. Also nearby is the protected Natural Park of the Salinas of San Pedro del Pinatar.
Two of the important coastal towns of the Costa Calida are Cartagena and Mazarron, Cartagena in particular has a long and rich history going back some 3,000 years, Hannibal (of elephant fame) used the city as his Iberian capital. It was also an important city during Roman times and the remains of many Roman buildings have been found throughout the city, including a fantastic Roman theatre. Cartagena is also one of the most important ports and naval bases in Spain.
Puerto de Mazarron and Mazarron itself are popular summer time destinations, Puerto de Mazarron has some excellent hotel facilities and some great nightlife, it also has a fine fishing port with regular fish auctions. In Mazarron town you will find the ruins of Velez Castle.
At the southern end of the Costa Calida lies the town of Aguilas, formerly an ancient Roman fishing village. In the 19th Century Aguilas was an important mining town and Hornillo Wharf, which can still be seen today, was where iron was loaded up for shipping. To the north of Aguilas is the Baroque town of Lorca a very interesting place to visit.
All in all the Costa Calida has much to offer, ancient towns and cities, fine sandy beaches, a great climate with around 315 days of sunshine every year and some fantastic sports facilities, including water sports and golf, which is very well catered for with many new courses recently opened.

Great apartment on a lovely resort. Quite quiet but very relaxing. Great for golfers. We had a lovely 14 night stay here. It was lik home from home except with a large swimming pool and hot weather. You definately need a car and would recommend Roldan down the road to go and eat of an evening. There is also a lovely Italian on the resort and the golf club if good for breakfast. Response: Sooo pleased you had a great time Shelley, and thanks for a brill review to go with the others. Cheers |
