About this location
The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Languedoc is a major touristic area for French people and foreigners. Domaine de Beaumont is well located if you want to explore this fascinating region. Agde, with its bustling old streets and an imposing 12th century cathedral, is only 3 kms. Nearby Marseillan was originally settled by the Phoenicians around 535BC and is the home of the vermouth Noilly Prat.
At Marseillan Plage there is a wonderful sandy beach. The modern resort of Cap D'Agde offers a wide range of leisure activities and a 14 km stretch of beach. Nearby Pezenas is a beautiful medieval market town with some wonderful 16th and 17th century buildings and was also the home for a period of the playwright Moliere. Beziers is well worth a visit and has some excellent restaurants and cafes. Slightly further away are the dynamic cities of Montpellier with an interesting mix of old and 21st century architectural styles and the historic cite of Carcassonne with its magnificent walled city.
The nearest airports are Béziers 20kms, Montpellier 55 kms, Nimes 105 kms, Perpignan 120kms, and Carcassonne 115 kms.
Here is a short summary of the regions history that should help us understand its origins...:
The Greeks, Phoenicians and then settled first in Languedoc. The region was later invaded by the Alamanni, Vandals, Visigoths and Saracens.
During the Middle Ages, Languedoc was known as the "county of Toulouse". It was indeed an independent county which was supposed to be part of the kingdom of France.
In the 12th century, the Cathar religious movement came from Languedoc. The Albigensian Crusade wiped them out since it had been declared heretics by the Church. That is why the county of Toulouse was taken by the crown of France in 1271. It has been part of France ever since.
The name given later to the area was Languedoc, meaning "language of oc" in the local Occitan language. The kings of France made Languedoc one of the provinces of the kingdom.
Later the parliament of Languedoc was established in Toulouse. The French Revolution abolished the parliament and the province.
Domaine de Beaumont is ideally situated for visitors looking for a sunny holiday in the south of France. Just a few kilometres from ancient Greek town of Agde and the famous beaches of the Mediterranean.
Agde - built on the lava flow and rocks of an ancient volcano, “le mount Saint-Loup”, the town of Agde offers panoramic views of the L' Hérault estuary.
It has an imposing cathedral dating from the 12thC, plus, the remains of the city walls originally built by the Greeks.
There is plenty for visitors to see and do, with bustling streets and many boutiques, to sampling the food served at the many fish restaurants along the quayside.
Cap d'Agde- originally Phoenician, and then an important Greek port, Cap d'Agde offers a variety of leisure activities. The Office de Tourisme talk of the 14 km of golden sandy beaches, each offering something different. Windsurfing, banana boat rides, pedalos, paragliding and all the normal seaside activities are available. The marina, with its large bars and restaurants is popular all year around.
