The Limousin region
The Limousin is in central France, and benefits from warm but not extreme summers and very clear seasons. It is part of the northern edge of the Massif Central with fast flowing rivers and numerous lakes, surrounded by ancient forests and farmland. The Limousin is predominately an agricultural region and home of the famous Limousin breed of beef cattle.
The atmosphere of the Limousin is one of peace and tranquillity with a superb variety of flaura and fauna on your doorstep. Many species of indigenous and migrating birds can be seen ranging from birds of prey including buzzards, kites and eagles to more exotic species such as the legendary Hoopoe and Cranes. Mammal species include wild boar, pine martins , red squirrels and coypu.
Historic Limoges is the capital of the region and is a cultural centre for lace and the famous Limoges pottery as well as providing great shopping in modern retail parks
There are many places of interest to visit during your stay at Gites de Campagne, here are just a few:
St Etienne de Fursac - five minutes drive, our local village which has a small supermarket, an excellent bakery for your fresh baguettes, a butcher, hairdresser, pharmacy, two bars, one of which is also an Italian restaurant.
La Souterraine - approximately 15 minutes drive, an ancient town founded by the monks of the Abbey of St Martial de Limoges with a Romanesque Gothic church. You can also find large supermarkets and a market with fresh produce every Saturday.
Lake St Pardoux - approximately 40 minutes drive, with three different sandy beaches, Santrop Beach a is big and can be busy with a large playground. Chabannes Beach is quieter, ideal for children and picnics and the third one is Freaudour Beach which is suitable for water sports.
Oradour sur Glane - approximately a one hour drive, on 10th June 1944 642 people were massacred, the village has remained untouched since that day as a memorial and museum.
Lake Vassiviere - approximately a one hour drive, the lake covers an area of 1000 hectares and is one of the largest lakes in France. Ideal for water sports, swimming and boat trips.
Labyrinthe Geant - approximately a 40 minute drive, 6 acres of parkland with many different activities including a giant maze.
