La Roque Gageac

La Roque Gageac is formally designated as "one of the prettiest villages in France" by the French Government, and who are we to disagree.

Stuck to the cliffs overlooking the river Dordogne the houses are built, one above the other, at interesting, odd angles in the golden stone of the region with the stunning perigordian architecture.

The village has evolved, one house at a time, over a 1000 years to have a charm and personality of it's own.

The area around the village is steeped in history; since the Vikings raided, well before the 100 years war, through the middle ages and each era has left it's mark.

There are five chateaux in the area around the village. Sarlat, which has more listed buildings per square metre than any other town in Europe is only 5 miles away. Domme, Castlenaud and Beynac are all within 3 miles so the house is in the centre of the "golden triangle" of the most interesting part of the Dordogne.

The food is world renowned and the markets have ingredients which have often been harvested that morning to provide the mouth-watering basis for anything you wish to cook.

"Beautiful house in a lovely peaceful location"

A beautiful, well-equipped house in a lovely peaceful setting close to the gorgeous village of La Roque Gageac. Something for all 10 of our extended family from 3 to 70 - playing in the pool, relaxing… More

"Wonderful, relaxing holiday!"

We had a wonderful holiday here, enjoying the French countryside in the Autumn sun. The house is secluded yet only a 10 minute walk into the pretty village of La Rocque Gageac where there are some lovely restaurants and a ready supply of breakfast croissants from the local bakery!
The house is clean, well equipped and spacious, with both an upstairs lounge and a traditional French Kitchen/dining area to relax in. Outside we enjoyed sipping our wine under the vines - laden with grapes, and relaxing by and of course swimming in the pool.
We found it to be an ideal location to base ourselves, visiting Sarlat, Domme and Castlenaud. There were plenty of nice walks which could incorporate a stop for a leisurely lunch. The highlight for us was a cycle to St Cyprien, along the river, with again a stop for lunch!
The owners were very helpful and really the house had a nice feel to it, more like a home. We would recommend this house without hesitation.

"Great holiday in a lovely villa in a stunning part of France"

We stayed for a two glorious weeks with three generations of family who all enjoyed the house, pool and local area. There were seven of us so there was plenty of room. We enjoyed walking into the village for bread and to eat at the local restaurants - and then being able to retreat back to the calm of La Croze. ... We particularly appreciated the huge fridge in the kitchen and the additional drinks fridge in the utility room. The barbecue was also a welcome addition. It was lovely to sit out after a meal in the 2evening under the stars. We managed to pack in canoeing ..., a visit to the chateau at Castelnaud, also a walk across the fields to Castelnaud ..., a trip down the river on a Gabarrre, a visit to the Jardins de Marqueyssac (fantastic views over the river) and a trip to Domme on market day. Otherwise we were happy to laze around the house, eating, drinking, reading, swimming and using the very reliable wifi ... All in all, a great holiday in a lovely villa in a stunning part of France.
