Tucked between the Dordogne River and steep, dramatic stone cliffs, the village of La Roque Gageac is the picturesque location for this completely renovated, 3000-square-foot, stone house. Dating from the Middle Ages, the Dordogne Village House is reportedly the oldest in the village. There are ancient stone steps gently ascending the hill, leading directly to the house. It offers an excellent opportunity to savor the natural beauty of this distinct area of France, as well as a truly authentic medieval village. This idyllic setting is convenient with wonderful restaurants, casual dining, and wine cellar within steps from the house.

On the mid-level of this three-story house, one enters through a rustic wooden door set into the thick, ochre-colored stonewalls onto a private courtyard. This leads to the entrance of the the home through your completely remodeled kitchen with massive stone fireplace ('cantou') that now houses a wood stove, a long dining table, a new cooking range, and refrigerator. The kitchen is completely equipped for convenient meal preparation. We can arrange for a chief and cooking classes as well.

Also on this floor, is a separate toilet room with sink.

The attractive lounge has oak beams and the original large traditional fireplace (in addition there is electric heating for winter use). The lounge is spacious with comfortable seating for gathering and sharing the days events. There are double French doors leading out to the ivy-covered river view terrace.

Also for your comfort, there is a convenient WIFI connection, a Bose Ipod port, radio, TV, DVD player with Movie library and free international calls.

A staircase leads to the top floor where there is a master bedroom with a King-size bed. A second bedroom next door has two twin beds (these can be made up as a king). Both bedrooms share a newly remodeled bathroom with a very large shower, vanity and toilet.

Below the main floor, on the lowest level, there is a double-size bedroom and spacious bathroom with tub/shower, bidet, toilet, and sink. The second bedroom on this floor has twin beds(can be made up as a king) and a sitting area.

This convenient floor plan allows for families or friends traveling together to enjoy the large open main floor for meals, conversation, and relaxing. Yet have complete privacy with the main floor separating their sleeping quarters.

The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

Perigord Noir (Black Perigord) is the most visited region of the Dordogne, and includes many of the sights that you will already have heard of. This part of the Perigord is the richest in terms of beautiful villages, magnificent castles, pre-historic cave paintings and caves rich in stalactites and stalagmites. It really is a wonderful area and well worth visiting.

The dordogne river in the Perigord Noir stretches from the lovely town of Saint Cyprien to and on to Carlux on the Lot/Dordogne border.

Close to La Roque Gageac are the "most beautiful villages" of Beynac, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle,and Domme. A little further south is the most beautiful village of Belves.

Along this same stretch of river are the magnificent castles of Beynac, Castelnaud, les Milandes, Montfort and the Chateau de Fenelon as well as the wonderful gardens of Marqueyssac, on the river near La Roque Gageac and the gardens of Eyrignac near Salignac.

There are also some caves in this part of the Perigord Noir though most are along the Vezere valley. Along the Dordogne valley are the caves at Domme, and the troglodyte dwellings under the main square of Belves.

SarlatOf course the highlight of a trip to the Perigord Noir is the beautiful town of Sarlat, packed with history and beautiful buildings.

La Roque Gageac

La Roque-Gageac is deservedly designated one of “les Plus Beax Village de France”. In medieval times, it was an important fortified village and later saw the addition of renaissance manors, including the Manoir de Tarde. It has retained its authentic character over the centuries, featuring attractive narrow stone streets and interesting homes, churches and public buildings. There is a weekly market, fabulous restaurants, a pizzeria and a bakery/pastry shop. For recreation, there are tennis courts, river beaches and canoes for rent. Completely sheltered by the cliffs, there is an area where the semi-tropical plant life survives year-round. A walking path that runs behind the buildings at the foot of the cliff provides great views. There are also pre-historic Troglodyte dwellings above. Within 15 min: The wonderful perserved towns of Beynac, Domme and Sarlat.
