Gite | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
Our gites are situated in the small village of St.Pierre d'Amilly, in the Charente Maritime region - right on the boarder of the beautiful Marais region, and just 40 km inland from La Rochelle (25 mins) and The Ile de Re (35 mins). The building is a traditional converted stone barn, which is over 300 years old, and was once used for the wine pressing for the village. Stone walls and oak beams, our accommodation provides comfort and character with modern convenience.
Our gites offer a taste of the real French countryside, with beautiful walks and bike rides on our doorstep. Close to all the region's towns and sites of interest, and of course its wonderful islands and beaches.
There is an excellent restaurant / creperie / bar right on the edge of our village, just a 15 minute walk away. Run by very friendly Belgians, La Ferme Flamande is open every lunchtime and Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Great plat du jours, galettes and perfect open-fire grilled steaks. Go for just a drink - they serve a wide selection of lovely beers too! Other good local restaurants at Surgeres, including Le Diwan - excellent Moroccan with stunning decor.

The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region
Discover the Marais by boat from numerous embarcation points (Arcais, Coulon, La Garette, Damvix), or hire a bicycle (Arcais, St Hilaire la Palud) and follow the specially designated routes. Fantastic area for bird watching with a bird sanctuary at St Hilaire la Palud. Numerous golf courses within easy reach, and fishing for inland and off shore enthusiasts. Seaside sports and activies within very easy reach including sailing, kite surfing and surfing (Ile d'Oleron and Ile de Re). Plenty of nearby indoor / outdoor swimming pools with slides and chutes to keep the kids amused. Chatelaillon is a very family focused resort, and is our nearest beach - only 25 mins away. Here you will find a lovely beach with a kids' club - a great place to leave them in safe hands while you look around the markets and enjoy the cafes.
History is ever present in Poitou Charentes. From prehistoric times to the present day, each period has left its mark. Experience Romanesque architecture at its best (eglise Saint-Pierre at Aulnay-de-Saintonge, eglise Saint-Hilaire at Melle). Enjoy sightseeing in towns of art and architecture, and towns of historical interest (Parthenay, Saintes, Poitiers, Talmont, Cognac, Brouage).
La Rochelle is full of great places to eat, and seafood is obviously a speciality. The shopping here is also fantastic, from small independent boutiques to larger department stores, all catering to a very style conscious crowd. The small beach at La Rochelle is a lovely spot to relax and unwind. The park is a beautiful area with great play areas for the kids, and a little menagerie with deer, goats, peacocks and donkeys.
The Ile de Re is a beautiful, unspoilt and fiercely protected island, connected to the mainland and La Rochelle by a magnificent 3 km bridge. 'A flat, fragrant, family friendly holiday spot. Just 30km long and 5km wide, it's criss-crossed by an extensive network (100km) of cycle paths which wind through fields full of poppies, pine forests, pretty French villages, past fishing harbours, salt pans and oyster farms. It's also celebrated for its endless sandy beaches backed by powdery dunes. The island feels like the France, or rather the 'seaside' of yesteryear. Strict building regulations have meant that even new properties have to stick to the low-slung whitewashed-with-green-shutters look. However, the chic shops and waterfront restaurants of the fishing villages give it a very French maritime sophistication.
