The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Deux Sevres region

On the Atlantic coast between the châteaux of the Loire Valley and the Bordeaux vineyards, lies Poitou-Charentes and the Vendee. This is one of the sunniest corners of the western coastline of France.

There is an astonishing average of 2250 hours of sunshine a year, making Poitou-Charentes one of the most consistently desirable places to visit in France. The warm air might give you the impression you're in the Mediterranean, the coast however with its dunes, pine forests and long beaches, are unmistakably Atlantic.

Further inland you find the River Charente and valley that epitomises rural France. The Charentes was once a busy industrial shipping inland waterway, today it's a peaceful lush land with plenty of vineyards and chateau.

There are plenty of cities and lively resorts that hold great charm and interest in the Poitou-Charentes region of France. Noirmoutier, Re, Oleron, Cognac, Poitiers and La Rochelle are all have their own appeal.

The principle town of Poitou-Charentes is La Rochelle, which is one of the prettiest and most distinctive towns in France. It is worth noting that the coast around La Rochelle is great for family holidays with shallow waters and miles of safe beaches. This historic and pretty town now has a modern marina that compliments the old port, and the waterfront restaurants are always busy and are of a high quality. And perched on a hilltop overlooking two rivers, Poitiers for its ecclesiastical architecture and history is worth a day trip at least.

Just northwest of Poitou-Charentes lies the rural department of the Vendee. The Vendee is dramatically crossed by four rivers, the Sèvre Nantaise, the Vendée, the Lay and the Sèvre Niortaise (which is over 150km long). The coast of the Vendée stretches to over 160km of mostly sandy beaches, many of them surprisingly unpopulated.

The Vendee has an exceptionally mild climate, that has long attracted large numbers tourists from France and abroad. Some of the more popular resorts include Les Sables d'Ollone, La Tranche-sur-Mer and St Jean de Monts. Several of the Vendee’s beaches are "blue flagged" for cleanliness.

Inland, the chief attractions include the Marais Poitevin (an area of marshlands famed for wildlife), the forested area around the village of Mervent, the rolling countryside of the Bocage and the historical theme park at the Puy du Fou. However, the main attraction and focus of the Vendee is the 90 kilometre stretch of coast between scenic Ile de Noirmoutier, and the stylish and chic Les Sables-d'Olonne. Les Sables-d'Olonne is popular with the Parisians and has an excellent art collection. And Ile de Noirmoutier was a monastic settlement in the 7th century and now is one of France's premier tourist resorts.

Cognac is made in the Charente so a trip to the medieval town is always interesting! This locally produced spirit is world famous. And the great food speciality of the Vendee and Poitou-Charentes is oysters.

With the climate, history and cuisine, Vendee and Poitou-Charentes is among the most popular holiday chateau destinations in France.

La Roche Posay area

The Château Delony sits in beautiful, tranquil countryside only an hour’s drive from the magnificent châteaux of the Loire Valley.

Many attractions are to be found within striking distance of the chateau. The healing waters of La Roche Posay, a 5 km bike ride from us, have drawn visitors since Roman times. Furthermore to specific therapies, guests can indulge themselves with a variety of massage and other spa treatments. The old town has narrow, winding streets. The ancient donjon has recently been restored and will soon become a museum. La Roche Posay also possesses a famous casino, a golf course, an equestrian centre and a racetrack, in addition to all regular shops and facilities.

Walkers, cyclists, horse-back riders and naturalists enjoy the network of ancient trails and footpaths that weave through the surrounding woods and fields, while the local rivers provide delight to swimmers, kayakers and canoeists. Near Lathus-St-Remy on the Gartempe is the Porte d’Enfer olympic-class white-water canoe course. Rock climbing is popular on the limestone cliffs along the Gartempe near Mérigny. For naturalists, the huge Brenne Regional Park, with its profusion of wildlife, is a special attraction, as is the famous Marais Poitevin or “Green Venice”. Located near the attractive Atlantic seaport of La Rochelle, one can rent a boat to explore this network of ancient canals that permeate the marshes.

For the gourmet and sybarite, the Chateau Delony provides an idyllic base from which to explore. A focus of gastronomic excellence, there are several restaurants of exceptional quality (and modest price) within easy distance. In addition, there are several outstanding village inns in the neighborhood that serve excellent 'family style' meals. Local wines abound. The nearby Château de Ris, for example, produce wines of outstanding quality and exceptional value.

Weekly markets in nearby towns offer an endless profusion of tempting delicacies, including local wines, cheeses and pâtés, together with a wealth of fresh fruits, vegetables and seafood. The region is particularly renowned for its manufacture of goat cheeses.

Chateau
Nigh on a 1000 years of colourful history lie locked in our massive stone walls. Its tumultuous history but a distant memory, The Chateau Delony is today a peaceful family holiday home. The drawbridge & moat survived until the French revolution, & today a flight of steps leads up from the gardens to the Grande Salle.

Interior
The spacious Grande Salle has a stone floor; it is dominated by a fine XIVth Century fireplace that burns continually when it gets cold. Great and splendid oak beams support the ceiling. Leading from the Grande Salle is the chateau's tower, with its spiral stone staircase linking the building’s 4 levels. Opening from the Grande Salle is the large family salon. This contains the TV, together with a VCR and DVD library and a computer. There is chess and plenty of other games and toys for children of all ages. Table tennis is available under cover on the lower (west) terrace.

The modern kitchen is fully equipped with dishwasher, microwave oven, everything you will need. The kitchen opens up into the Grande Salle, but it does not intrude. The furnishings throughout are tasteful but not fussy, & include a library of books on a wide range of subjects.

Ground floor
The 2 ground floor bedrooms open onto the west terrace, with its secluded grape arbor. Both rooms connect to a shared bathroom, & both have large double beds. On a par with all the rooms in the chateau they have stone or tile floors and beamed ceilings.

First floor
The master bedroom is found on the first floor, with its splendid renaissance fireplace. Opening off an anteroom – the solarium – is the main bathroom and separate loo. The bathroom contains twin sinks, a Jacuzzi tub and large shower. The bathroom also has a private entrance onto the moat.

Opening off the tower is the salon bedroom, which has twin beds. This is an elegant, beamed room with a fine XIVth Century fireplace, together with its own entranceway onto the circular north terrace. Opening off the salon is the old chapel, now sadly converted by the ancien propriataires into a shower and laundry room. The salon also has its own separate toilet and sink.

Second floor
The main floor has the Grande Salle, kitchen and family room. There is a shower and toilet in the family room. There is a double bed, and additional beds (and cribs) for children can be provided if required.

Third floor
At the top of the stone spiral staircase is a stunning, lofty room with interesting pegged beams. There is a double bed and a small single bed. The view from this room across the valley of the Creuse is amazing.

Further details outdoors:
The attractive gardens inspire considerable comment. In particular are the many secluded arbors & nooks, where people can relax, read or converse. The principle attraction of the garden is the large pool, which is a focal point for much summer activity. A solar heating system ensures the pool a long season each year. The pool area is fenced. There is also an infra-red security system that meets the new French safety standards.

For the children and adults there is badminton, croquet and table tennis on offer. The barbeque on the circular north terrace get a lot of use each summer. The green lanes and trails through the adjoining woods provide an endless variety of walks and hikes.
