Vigneron Cottage is one of four beautiful cottages set in a 15th century chateau in the French Loire Valley near Chinon. Run by a family for families, our beautiful cottages offer all the comforts of home with king sized memory foam beds and luxury bathrooms, breakfast served every day and dinner available three times per week, heated pool and indoor/outdoor childrens' play areas, and plenty to do and see nearby. The cottage is located at one end of the main chateau, with entrance hall, spacious sitting/dining room (TV, DVD, UK channels), eat-in fully fitted kitchen (hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge/freezer) upstairs a king size double bedroom (TV, UK Channels) with original fireplace and original wooden beams, very large boutique-style bathroom (free standing bathtub, separate rain shower, wc, double vanity unit) second bedroom next door in the hexagonal tower with twin beds, perfect for accompanying children. Surrounded by acres of agricultural cropland, this is a haven of countryside peace. Animals on site provide extra entertainment for the children (sheep, donkey, goat, chickens that children can visit and feed). Walking and cycling direct from the door on quiet country lanes. Within half hour drive, canoeing, ropes courses, horseriding, mouthwatering traditional markets, royal chateaux (Ussé, Chinon, Azay le Rideau, Abbey of Fontevraud, Gizeux, Rivau, Saumur), historic medieval towns, steam train, amazing zoo... just about everything you want from a family holiday, should you decide to leave the gates!

The Loire Valley region

The Loire Valley is best known for two things : its wine and its Chateaux. Here in the Chinon appellation there are over 200 winemakers, and Chinon borders Bourgueil, St Nicolas de Bourgueil, Saumur, Saumur Champigny, and Touraine. The Valley itself stretches from Muscadet on the Atlantic Coast to Sancerre in the centre of France, and at Loire Valley Retreat we have a house selection of about 40 wines red, white, rosé and sparkling that span the Loire in great affordable exmaples of the producing areas. We can arrange in depth wine tours and tastings for those who are interested in sharing this passion! As far as the Chateaux are concerned, the Kings of France dotted the landscape of the region with feudal manors, glamourous stone turrets and hardy fortresses over several hundred years. Henri, King of the Plantagenets (and indeed of England and France in the 1100's) chose Chinon for his seat of power (and quite right he was!) His son Richard the Lionheart is buried 20 kms away at Fontevraud Abbey, and the opulent hunting lodges of the nobility up to the French revolution are all open for tourists to visit. Stunning gardens at Villandry, Leonardo da Vinci's last home at Amboise (Clos Lucé), pretty princess towers at Ussé, the home of Sleeping Beauty, fabulous François 1 interiors at Azay le Rideau ... it's all here to discover, along with our favourite selection of child-friendly chateaux and other tourist attractions, sporting pursuits, eateries and mouthwatering markets there is something for everyone here.

La Roche-Clermault

Most locally, our nearest town is Chinon. This is where Joan of Arc famously picked the fuure King of France out of a room of strangers and commenced her tragic journey. Chinon is a medieval town with immaculately preserved architecture and cobbled pedestrian streets. It is also home to some fantastic restaurants, and some very accessible bars and cafés - for a great lunch on a pavement terrasse you cannot go wrong here! Chinon has a local food market every Thursday morning, a fortress to visit, a horse and carriage tour, a walking tour, some charming shops and the buzz of a typical French town going about its daily life. All the amenities you could need (supermarket, hypermarket, shopping, wine tasting) are available in Chinon.
