About this location
The Loire Valley region
The Loire Valley is best known for two things : its wine and its Chateaux. Here in the Chinon appellation there are over 200 winemakers, and Chinon borders Bourgueil, St Nicolas de Bourgueil, Saumur, Saumur Champigny, and Touraine. The Valley itself stretches from Muscadet on the Atlantic Coast to Sancerre in the centre of France, and at Loire Valley Retreat we have a house selection of about 40 wines red, white, rosé and sparkling that span the Loire in great affordable exmaples of the producing areas. We can arrange in depth wine tours and tastings for those who are interested in sharing this passion! As far as the Chateaux are concerned, the Kings of France dotted the landscape of the region with feudal manors, glamourous stone turrets and hardy fortresses over several hundred years. Henri, King of the Plantagenets (and indeed of England and France in the 1100's) chose Chinon for his seat of power (and quite right he was!) His son Richard the Lionheart is buried 20 kms away at Fontevraud Abbey, and the opulent hunting lodges of the nobility up to the French revolution are all open for tourists to visit. Stunning gardens at Villandry, Leonardo da Vinci's last home at Amboise (Clos Lucé), pretty princess towers at Ussé, the home of Sleeping Beauty, fabulous François 1 interiors at Azay le Rideau ... it's all here to discover, along with our favourite selection of child-friendly chateaux and other tourist attractions, sporting pursuits, eateries and mouthwatering markets there is something for everyone here.
Most locally, our nearest town is Chinon. This is where Joan of Arc famously picked the fuure King of France out of a room of strangers and commenced her tragic journey. Chinon is a medieval town with immaculately preserved architecture and cobbled pedestrian streets. It is also home to some fantastic restaurants, and some very accessible bars and cafés - for a great lunch on a pavement terrasse you cannot go wrong here! Chinon has a local food market every Thursday morning, a fortress to visit, a horse and carriage tour, a walking tour, some charming shops and the buzz of a typical French town going about its daily life. All the amenities you could need (supermarket, hypermarket, shopping, wine tasting) are available in Chinon.
