The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The Dordogne is the most northerly of the Departments making up Aquitaine. It is diverse and essentially rural. The east of the Dept. is known for its "villages perches" often fortified as this region was fought over by the French and the English for 100 years. There are dozens of chateaux varying from the grand to the humble, the famous pre history sites of Lascaux and many lovely riverside towns. Here in the west of the dept., the countryside is a mix of wood and pastureland, a comfortable landscape with lovely rivers (The Dronne, The Lisle) and a myriad of small lakes or Etangs as the French call them. Small local towns abound and their market days are a favourite with locals and visitors alike.

Further afield in Aquitaine are the world renowned vineyards of Bordeaux and many of the chateaux welcome visitors and sell their wines direct to the public.

The Atlantic coast is about 1 hour 40 minutes away. It has miles of sandy beaches at good surf. The Dune de Pilat, close to the bay of Arcachon, is reckoned to be the largest sand dune in Europe.

La Roche-Chalais

La Roche Chalais has the advantage of being a working town. It has two small but successful local industries providing employment for 600 people which means the town is alive all the year round, unlike some of the more picturesque towns and villages of the east of the dept., where massive influx of outsiders buying properties but not being resident means that many towns and villages become "ghost towns" outside the summer holiday season and have lost their essentially French character. Like the "native" locals, we live here all the year round and are part of a vital community. In, or very close to La Roche Chalais are a cinema, tennis courts, swimming pool, canoeing and horse riding. The town has two good supermarkets as well as a butchers, 3 bakers and two restaurants. Several other restaurants are within 10KM.

There are waymarked walks and bike trails allowing access to the forests and lakes.

"A perfect place for a family holiday."

This is our fifth time at Le Vignaud...we have not looked anywhere else since we first came here! The Handley family are natural hosts, while the area is beautiful and the houses are well maintained. Porcherat was renovated last winter and now provides even better facilities including a lovely open plan kitchen/living area. The lake can provide a lively centre for families to meet; with a diving board, boats, canoes and a pedalo - or just space to quietly sit and read a book. Sometimes we have taken a couple of houses and had a fabulous holiday with extended family or friends - other times we have just enjoyed each others company and those who happen to be down at the lake at the same time as us.

"It`s France,Jim, as we love it......."

Every picture tells a story but couldn't do justice to Le Vignaud.Tranquil countryside, good, traditional but individualistic accommodation ....and lakes to offer safe activity for all.Relax down on the farm or explore the wider area, things of interest abound within easy range...including the big-city fix of Bordeaux if you need it.
Roger , Sally and family offer a warm welcome, in their inimitable way...another plus!
Beware, though.Stay here and you may need to return, often. We have.

"Wonderful, relaxing and funfilled French holiday with load for kids and adults alike."

We were lucky enough to travel to Le Vignaud with friends who were staying in one of the other houses,as they do most years.

We stayed at the Doll's House which was perfect for our family of 4.
All beautifully kept with everything we could need and a very relaxed feel.

The lake is a huge attraction as it provides a beautiful area for swimming, boating, canooing and fishing.
The property and surrounding area is perfect for cycling and we also managed to do some very reasonable horse riding very close by which was a new experience for our children.

The farm itself was also great for the kids as they were able to feed the sheep and go on a tractor ride and the owners were incredibly friendly, helpful and relaxed.

The propery is well situated in a quiet area but is close to the local vilage making shopping easy and also to many beautiful villages which were interesting to visit.

We thouroughly enjoyed our stay and feel is offered everything we could have asked for!

"This is a wonderful, peaceful, beautiful place for a family holiday"

This was our third visit and as usual we had a great time. There is something for every age group and if the 'outdoors' is your thing then you will love it. There is good fishing, lovely walks through the woods, cycling in the nearby lanes and swimming in the lake. Roger and Sally are great hosts with lots of good ideas for days when you cant decide what to do. Further afield there are plenty of towns and villages to visit and a market everyday within 20 miles if that is what you want. The Gites are comfortable and well modernised, and if you are adventurous enough then you can camp a night out on the island.
We would recommend this holiday whole heartedly.

"La France Profonde at its best!"

We have returned to Le Vignaud many times over the years, and have stayed in all the holiday properties on the farm which we have always found to be clean, comfortable and well-equipped. It is a delightfully peaceful spot with easy access to a wide range of attractions in the area for days out, with the tempting prospect of a swim in the lake on your return. Roger and Sally are the perfect hosts - always on hand when needed but respectful of guests' privacy.
