The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Gironde region
Aquitaine has it all, from sandy beaches, pine forests canoeing, kyaking, fishing, horse riding, cycling , golf and of course wine, and historical interest.
Places of interest include the beautiful lagoon of the Bassin d’Arcachon, Bordeaux , Sauternes, Medoc & St-Emilion. There are many historical bastides towns such as Creon, Cadillac and Libourne. visit one of the 5000 chateaux or wine properties where grapes and grown and harvested or take wine-tasting classes in the summer at the Maison du Vin near St-Emilion.
For a family day out visit the Dune du Pilat - the largest sand dune in Europe which runs south of the Bassin d'Arcachon for almost 2 miles.
La Reole / Fontet area
Fontet is a very attractive village set beside the canal, worth exploring, from its open bell tower church to its tiny museum (Musee des allumettes) dedicated to match stick models. For the family visit the local mariner (Base de loisirs Halte nautique) where children can safely swim in the lake or play on the man made beach. There is a beach bar for light refreshments and ice creams. In the village you will find a Boulangerie and a very good restaurant (Les Fontines) both within a short stroll from Lordons. There are many horse riding stables close by who cater for all levels. There are numerous walks along the Canal du Midi/The Canal Lateral which runs through the village stretching from the Mediterranean Sea to Bordeaux, the Canal being the back drop for Rick Stein’s French Odyssey. Across the valley, is the ancient river port town of La Reole.
La Reole is a medieval fortress town (Approx 5 minutes drive) it boasts a wealth of medieval architecture along a well-signposted walk through its narrow, streets, Visit France's oldest town hall, constructed for Richard the Lion heart in the twelfth century, and the well-preserved simple Abbaye des Bénédictins – with a fantastic view over the River Garonne and the surrounding countryside. La Réole's tourist office is on place de la Libération, it conducts tours of the sights of La Reole in July and August. A good restaurant is Les Fontaines on rue du Verdum, serving classic French cuisine, albeit with a modern touch, and a wide choice of menus. A lively Saturday market on the esplanade des Quais along the Garonne provides good locally grown fresh produce. La Reole is on the pilgrims Route to St. Jacques de Compostella.
