Trompe l'oeil 2 person
Studio | No Bedrooms | sleeps 2
If you want to enjoy skiing in one of the largest ski areas in Europe but not spend an absolute fortune then Les Coches could be just what you are looking for and our apartments put you right in the centre of the resort.
Les Coches is part of the La Plagne ski area which itself is linked to Les Arcs as the Paradiski area.
Les Coches was developed in the 1980s but not as an impersonal concrete resort. Instead it uses traditional materials of wood and slate. It is within the tree line so looks attractive. All the main facilities are within a small radius of the centre and the resort has a really friendly feel, which is why we having been coming here for 17 years. Having stayed many times in the residences out of the centre, and got fed up with the trudge from the shops back to the apartment, we chose to buy in a central location.
The apartment is a simple studio which sleeps 2 people but is right opposite our 4 person flat so the 2 can be booked together to provide accommodation for 6 people.
The central location is the big draw. We acquired the flats at the start of 2011 and are in the process of updating them. This apartment was rewired in May 2011 and the bathroom and kitchen refreshed later that year. We hope that we will be able to build up a loyal clientele who will appreciate the improvements we make and benefit from a loyalty discount in future years.

The Rhone/French Alps region
Who can fail to be moved when viewing the majesty of the Alps? Summer or winter the scenery inspires you and takes your breath away. From Les Coches you can see Mont Blanc. At 4810m it is the highest mountain in Western Europe.
In winter the area is renown for skiing and snowboarding. In the summer the mountains are covered with grass and flowers. The blueberries (myrtilles) grow wild beneath the trees on the mountain side and you can find groups of French families collecting them.
In the summer the cultural activities also come to the fore with concerts and art exhibitions. The baroque churches of the area and castles built in improbable places, plus the mountain passes are worth a visit.
Les Coches is in the Paradiski area, boasting 425km of ski runs, 175 ski lifts and skiing up to 3250m. The ski area combines runs in Les Arcs and La Plagne linked by the Vanoise Express, a stunning cable car spanning 1800m, 380m above the valley. Les Coches is the closest resort to the Vanoise Express and so is ideal for skiers who want to make the most of the area. The ski area is open from mid December to the end of April and caters for snow boarders, alpine skiers, cross country skiers, snow shoe walkers - you name it, they provide it!
Montchavin-Les Coches is a family-friendly resort. Montchavin at 1250m is the original farming village and retains its traditional charm. Les Coches, at 1450m, was developed in the 1980s as a purpose-built holiday village. It too has a friendly village feel, with a traffic-free centre and low rise apartment buildings clad in wood and stone. If you think purpose-built resorts are cold and impersonal, with no trees and no character then come to Les Coches to enjoy the difference. Les Coches has a skating rink at the top of the resort, easily accessible using the free bubble lift.
So what can you do apart from snow sports in the winter? The tourist office and ski schools offer guided walks and trips to places of local interest such as cheese makers or the baroque churches of the area. The walk from Les Coches to Montchavin only takes 15 minutes and you can get the free shuttle bus back or walk back in 45 minutes - quicker if you are young and fit! Montchavin has a cinema and the shuttle bus does its last run back to Les Coches after the cinema turns out.
In the summer mountain bikes can be hired, walking trails are well marked, tennis, golf, white water rafting and other activities can all be found. The mountain villages and churches are well worth a look, or take a drive through one of the mountain passes that are closed in the winter.
The village of Aime is worth a visit summer or winter. The village of Montchavin is building a new outdoor swimming pool which is due to open in 2011. During the summer season you can hire mountain bikes and some of the lifts are open to enable walkers and bikers to reach the higher altitude trails. The resort is open from the beginning of July to the beginning of September for the summer season. In the valley, at Landry, you can find a water sports centre offering activies for a range of abilities, from canoeing to white water rafting. There is also a cycle path that runs beside the river from Bourg-St-Maurice to Bellentre and Aime.

"Well located appartment with good access to Les Coches' facilities and the Paradiski area."
The appartment is small but ideal for couple on either a summer or winter holiday. we stayed in August and used the appartment as a base from which to explore the area for rock climbing, via ferrata and walking. We also spent a few days visiting local towns (Beaufort, Val d'isere amoungst others) and spent a couple of days at the Base de Loisirs near Bellentre which is great for a day chilling out by the lake. There are plenty of climbing spots arounf to suit all abilites all with in an hours drive (Wherever you stay you will have a bit of a drive to get to places due to the nature of the alpine roads). There are several via ferrats within an hours drive also, however this area does not compare to the dolomites in terms of number of via ferrata but the ones that are there are just as good.
We would also definatly consider returning for a skiing holiday. I have skiied the Paradiske area twice before and it is fantastic and Les Coches gives excellent acces to this ski area. Therer are two lifts within 100 metres of the appartment.
Les Coches is a nice village and has several good resturaunts. The best one we thought was La Poze, in which we had two excellent meals and if you are on a budget they have a three courses for €22 menu.
Everything about the stay was well coordinated by Madeleine and as long as you follow her instructions on how to get there all goes smoothly (we didn't read them properly and found oursleves trying to unlock the wrong appartment, completely our fault).
