About the home
La Portette is a beautiful converted farmhouse on 3 floors, with lots of original features and warm furnishings.
The stunning top floor features an open plan living and dining area, with amazing views up and down the Tarentaise valley across to the distant peaks of Mont Blanc. Balconies open off 2 sides of the house from picture windows. The airy living room has huge, squashy sofas, a log fire and an extensive library. We are owner run, and dedicated to good service. You'll be fed yummy breakfasts and afternoon teas daily, with excellent three course meals and unlimited wine 6 days a week. Tea time might include hot chocolates and mulled wine. Dinner time drinks include our house champagne cocktail, a local kir, the grolla, and genepi; and we also offer pre-dinner nibbles of some of the local specialities.
Children are always welcome, with early evening suppers and all the accroutrements of childhood from cots and high chairs to prams, sleds and even toys. And if you want to bring all three generations we offer a discount to over 65s too.
We pre-purchase your lift passes, arrange any ski lessons, and organise your ski hire for in chalet delivery and fitting. When you arrive, you have absolutely no queuing to do and we get you straight on to the slopes.
Our private minibus takes you the 3 minutes from the chalet door to the telecabine every morning - you decide what time! Call us from the slopes or a bar for a pick up and we'll be there to meet you.
We're open year round. In winter we offer catered ski holidays; in summer, self-catered, B&B or catered.

The Rhone / French Alps / Savoie region

Situated at 1150 metres on one side of the Tarentaise Valley, we're in a great spot for winter and summer alike.
SKIING
We are right at the heart of Paradiski with over 400kms of pistes. Paradiski includes La Plagne and Les Arcs: we're on the La Plagne side, one chair lift away from the 200 person cable car the Vanoise Express which links up to Les Arcs.
There is skiing for all abilities on a great range of slopes: pretty tree-lined windy runs, wide open pistes, powder fields, snow parks, two glaciers, and slopes facing north, south east and west.
SUMMER
In summer there are miles of paths and trails to explore; the GR5 walking route goes right past the house and the entrance to the Vanoise National Park is on the doorstep. A cycle piste runs along the river, and challenging road routes lead into the mountains and over the cols. Mountain bike trails are aided in July and August by the lifts that take you and your bike up high.
The Savoie is at the heart of the Alps. Part of France, we also border Italy and until 1860 the Savoie was its own independent principality. The region is remote and beautiful, with high mountains and sparkling lakes, rivers and castles and villages.
The La Plagne / Montchavin area
MONTCHAVIN - LA PLAGNE - PARADISKI
We are in the heart of the Paradiski skiing domain: 400km of pistes, 2 equipped glaciers, and runs to suit all abilities. Our side of the valley, La Plagne, has over 224km of pistes and 10 resort villages: we are located at Montchavin.
Montchavin was originally a farming village and has charming cobbled streets, old stone buildings, and apple orchards. One chair lift takes you to the Vanoise Express cable car crossing the valley to Les Arcs: so guests can ski each side of the mountain easily. It's a wonderfully friendly place with some great restaurants and bars. Neighbouring Les Coches has an ice-skating rink
We look after beginners especially carefully: arranging lessons, with special ski pass deal, and ski hire, and we take you to your lessons, where you'll learn on green slopes amongst the trees.
Intermediates can enjoy the miles of blue and red runs, from tree lined tracks to sunny wide open spaces.
Experienced skiers can try the 2km black descent, or be guided off-piste down the Bellecote Glacier powder fields.
Plagne 1800 is home to the Olympic bobsleigh run: this is open to visitors for a memorable evening's fun.

Our first ski holiday with Mountains Inc but definitely not our last. 30 plus ski holidays and this has been one the best. Our stay at La Portette was truly enjoyable from the very start, even our ski hire came to the chalet on our first evening for fittings. No wasting time on the first morning waiting around in crowded ski rental shops and then struggling back with equipment, just relaxed friendly personal service, I was even sipping a beer while I had my boots fitted. It doesn't get any more relaxed than that. The chalet was stunning and we spent many an afternoon relaxing on the balcony taking in the breathtaking views and sipping a cool beverage before a sumptuous meal and more than a few bottles of wine. The chalet team were all quietly efficient and nothing was too much trouble for them. I can't wait to go back next year. |

We stayed with our kids aged 13, 10 and 8 and took the whole of the chalet along with another family and a couple. Liza was most helpful throughout the booking process including advise on ski schools. She organised our lift passes which were ready at the chalet on our arrival. She was also unfased by the fact that we all arrived under different modes of transport and co-ordinated all our pick-ups! The chalet itself is in a tiny village called Montorlin just outside Montchavin. Its a quiet traditional French village yet close to the slopes. The chalet has beautiful views from the top floor across the mountains including Mont Blanc. The living area on the top floor is a great place to relax after a hard day's skiing with lots of squasy sofas. The rooms come in a variety of shapes and sizes and the bathrooms could do with a bit of updating - it is worth noting that not every room has an ensuite. We were very well looked after by the delightful Peter and Vera who were great hosts. The food was fantastic and Peter shuttled us by minibus to the telecabine at Montchavin, only a 5-10 minute drive away. You then have easy access to both La Plagne and Les Arcs and we made good use of the full Paradiski lift pass, using the Vanoise express quite regularly. All in all this is a delightful chalet and with the flexible minibus service to the lifts it really is in a great location. |

Guestbook for La Portette
"We've stayed several times with Mountains Inc and every time just gets better than the last.
The chalet is stunning and lined with more books, dvds, music and boardgames than you (and your kids) could imagine. Like someone who was staying with us said, it is the best library you will ever drink in!
The location is incredible. The only thing better than the charming french village the chalet is located in is the amazing vista waiting to be enjoyed from the balcony.
The skiing is by far our favourite in the Alps and offers such a variety for skiers and boarders. And you can have your kit fitted at the chalet in one of the comfy sofas!!
Liza and Andy are the most welcoming hosts ever, eager to help in every way and just happy to see you and your friends having a good time.
We couldn't recommend Mountains Inc enough. High 5 to Liza and Andy, their amazing chalet and the oncoming winter " thomh 13 Oct 10
Ski Chalet - with charm and class!
"We've just come back from a ski holiday staying with Mountainsinc in Montorlin, just down from Montchavin/Les Coches - and had the best time!
The village is a beautiful French village, just like your imagination would conjure up.
The chalet is filled with its own charm, hundreds of books, eclectic CD Collection, very comfy sofas, plenty of wine and a tasty feast every night!
The ski-ing is brilliant for all levels - beginners to off pisters. You can get a lift to the bubble / lift and there's lockers for your kit.
Three cheers to the lovely hosts - Liza and Andy
