The Murcia region
The Murcia region situated in the south-east of Spain is still a very traditional area with many Spanish people coming to this area for their holidays in July and August. There are historical towns and cities, breathtaking villages on rugged volcanic mountains, all which host a variety of bars, restaurants and tourist attractions, with many traditional fiestas throughout the year.
The Costa Calida is one of the least known and most unspoilt regions of Spain, guaranteed to give you a taste of "real Spain". Situated at the bottom of the Costa Blanca, on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, starting with the province of Murcia and running south towards Almeria – where the Costa del Sol commences. Fertile agricultural land and miles of beautiful Blue Flag sandy beaches make this a very typically unspoilt part of Spain.
The weather on the Costa Calida is the best in Spain. Winters are warmer and drier than any other part of Spain making the climate not only enjoyable but also beneficial from the health point of view. The hilly
hinterland protects this area against the wind of the flat lands, resulting in temperatures during winter of 16ºC to 22ºC and in the summer of about 30ºC and higher. The sun shines 320 days on average per year, low humidity and very low rainfall making it a near perfect climate.
With over 3000 hours of sunshine every year it is little wonder that the Costa Calida means ‘the Warm Coast’. Together with the unspoilt inland waters of the Mar Menor, which is a magnificent and the largest natural lagoon and swimming pool in Europe, offering safe and warm water bathing all year round, the Costa Calida offers You the very best of Spain – without the expensive price tag.
La Manga Strip
The golden sandy beaches of the Mediterranean along the La Manga Strip are a Haven for Water Sport enthusiasts and renowned for scuba diving. The shallow waters and the absence of tides also make the Mar Menor side the ideal place for all types of water sports and safe place for kids to swim.
The area is best known for the La Manga Club in the south, famous for its championship Golf courses, Tennis facilities and night-life including the renowned Casino.
La Manga is situated in the Province of Murcia in a coastal area which boasts of the most moderate climate in Spain, with more days of sunshine than any other mainland area and water temperatures much higher than average. La Manga Strip at the Costa Calida is totally unique Paradise, the only place of its kind in the world, where you can enjoy an unusual privilege; to share two seas, the Mediterranean and an inland sea “Mar Menor”. “If you like the Sea, we have Two”. The sandy beaches and the clear shallow waters make La Manga Strip a Paradise between two seas, ideal for kids and water sports.
La Manga is one of the top holiday favourite in Europe with the Spanish, and yet remains unknown to most of the European tourists. The area is very Spanish so you're guaranteed a flavour of 'real' Spain and is not your typical package deal holiday resort. The locals are very friendly and whilst many do speak English, a phrase book is sometimes useful.
‘La Manga’ means ‘sleeve’ in Spanish and is an appropriate name for this strip of land, 24 km long and only 80-300 m wide which forms a barrier between two seas – The Mediterranean and The Mar Menor (Minor Sea). There are over 44 km of golden sand beaches, narrower but with protected bays and coves on the side of the Mar Menor, and longer, wider expanses of pure golden sand fronting the Mediterranean. Considering the vast effort needed to keep them clean, it is proud to say that most can boast of the Blue Flag - awarded in accordance with the regulations laid down by the European Community.
In La Manga long warm summers seems to go on forever and ever, and mild sunny winters make this a perfect all year around destination for active or leisure holidays. La Manga is world famous for its very beautiful environment and amenities. Accommodation is equally superb, with views over the Mar Menor with continent lights and mountains behind and in front of the Mediterranean.
If you wish you could visit the noisier ‘night-life’ & main shops lower down the strip – just a tourist bus ride away. There is a vast choice of shops, bars, banks and restaurants along the length of the La Manga Strip where entertainment is guaranteed to continue well into the night you will never be bored here! Some of those are within walking distance of the apartment, however there is a regular bus running the length of the strip for those less energetic!
There is a range of activities to keep the whole family amused for all hours of the days.
There is a nine-hole golf course within a 5 minute drive from the apartment. There are also a number of championship 18 holes courses nearby, with 3 at the famous La Manga Club, just 20 minutes drive from the apartment.
The Mar Menor is an immense lake of crystal clear waters of about 170 square kilometres. The coastline is more than 70 km long and accommodates many nice villages. The pleasant temperature of the Mar Menor (about 4 degrees higher than the Mediterranean) is a result of the warm wind in combination with the shallow water, tranquil and rich in iodine and salt minerals, noted for its therapeutic properties.
It has an average depth of 1.7m making it an ideal location to enjoy all facilities to practice a wide range of water sports available along its beaches. The depth around the shore is only 0.5m and this, combined with the warm water temperature makes La Manga the perfect place for children to safely enjoy themselves. There are beautiful sandy beaches and promenades surround the Mar Menor. La Manga del Mar Menor provides a unique spot offering clean water with peaceful, tide-free bathing on pleasant shores all year around. The calm waters maintain a very pleasant temperature that never drops lower than around 18 degrees centigrade.
In many areas of the Mar Menor the therapeutic Black Mud clay can be found, these are a favourite with the Spanish tourists, who will cover themselves with the clay and then bake in the hot sun. The Black Mud Therapy increase body’s absorption of minerals activates the blood stream and stimulates bone problems healing. Its usage is recommended for scars, skin problems, rheumatism, arthritis, gout, throat infections, rehabilitation and many other ailments. The Black Mud from the Mar Menor, although creating a strange sight when first seen smothered over the bodies of some of the visitors, is used to relieve the pain and the symptoms of these conditions.
Enjoy the benefit for the health, a full environment of nature and its wonderful climate, which has been recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as one of the healthiest environments to live in Europe. The lagoon has been designated by the United Nations as a specially protected area for the Mediterranean.
La Manga offers unbeatable conditions for all types of water sports during all four seasons of the year. Given the temperature of the sea and the shallow waters of the Mar Menor, there could not be a better or safer place to learn or brush up the water sport of your choice, but for those of you have mastered their craft, you have access to the Mediterranean via the channel which joins the two seas, the "Canal del Estacio". Anyone who feels confident enough to sail on the "high seas" can leave the Mar Menor and spend the day visiting the various small islands which are to be found off the coast - "Isla Grossa", "el Farallón" or "las Islas Hormigas".
Swimming enthusiasts can always count on the waters of the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean when it comes to practising their favourite sport. The gentle climate keeps the waters at a reasonable temperature all year round, and even with the prevailing winds which the sailing fraternity like so much, one or other of the beaches of La Manga will assure reasonably calm waters. Even with the changing winds – the ‘Levante’ which comes from the Mediterranean and the ‘Lebeche’ from the Mar Menor – it is always possible to find a sheltered spot to swim and sunbathe.
The two distinct seas, soft breezes, sunny days and significant sporting infrastructure make La Manga a Water Sports Paradise. No one needs travel far to practice the water sport of their choosing; sailing, canoeing, scuba and deep-sea diving, windsurfing, jet-skiing, water-skiing, kite surfing, and most other nautical sports.
La Manga over the years has become home for a large cosmopolitan society made up of all nationalities and this mix means that the services, goods and products on offer is more varied than would normally be found in Mediterranean resorts. There is a complete mix of nationalities, including many English, German, Swedish and Belgian business owners, to name but a few, which means that everyone has the opportunity to try different cuisine and sample different atmospheres created by these intrepid settlers in Spain.
La Manga offers a wealth of different styles of cuisine although it is fair to say that the typically Mediterranean style of cooking is available in all good restaurants. This includes famous paellas, fresh fish, freshly grilled meats and succulent salads, normally using locally grown produce. One of the local delicacies is a whole fish (usually locally caught mujol or dorada) cooked in a jacket of salt, which, although when served is quite often considered to lack a little in terms of presentation, is a very delicate and filling dish. Lobster is also available, as are oysters when in season, and a great variety of shellfish brought in each day by the fishermen from Cabo de Palos.
It would take to long to explain here each of the various dishes available and we recommend that the visitor tries them all - the cold "gazpacho" soup, the garlic stews, the magnificent whole legs of goat and lamb - the list is as endless as it is mouth-watering. But the good thing is that everyone is catered for - with the many "foreign" restaurants, including the inevitable pizzas, burgers and Chinese you cannot fail to find somewhere to your liking.
At nearby Cabo de Palos the Sunday Market offers a great variety of goods for sale, from fresh fruit and vegetables to clothes, shoes, hand-crafted goods and gifts being among the most popular. The market receives visitors from many of the surrounding areas, who then drift down to the harbour to take tapas (Drink/Snack), stay for lunch or just stroll along the quayside.
Thomas Maestre Marina just within a walking distance has a lovely ‘Café’ lifestyle with shops, many French, Greek, Mexican and Spanish bars and restaurants. Children’s’ dishes are readily available.
From the Marina all year round and from the beaches in the summer months, you can organize a great variety of water sports, days out, fishing, boat trips, hire boats, scuba-diving trips. A Ferry runs from the Marina to the mainland at San Javier.
The sailing of catamarans, canoeing, water skiing and most other nautical sports including deep-sea diving are located on the shores of the Mar Menor in ideal conditions.
This is an ideal place to spend a Family Holiday or party till dawn with your Friends in the many bars in the Marina after trying your skills within an easy drive of the region championship golf courses.
Apart from the water sports, La Manga offers a great variety of other activities. There are various golf courses, tennis clubs with courts open to the public all year round, plus paddle tennis and squash in addition to a roller-skating rink and full size go-kart track. The road which runs through La Manga has been built to offer the cyclist the safety of a cycle-lane and the absence of hills throughout the strip.
If you're a lover of golf there are countless golf courses in and around La Manga Strip. Just a 20 minutes drive from the apartment at south end of the strip, the famous La Manga Club has been voted Europe’s top resort for golfing several times - you are really in for a treat.
Each of the championship courses represents a different challenge, with the south course having hosted the Spanish Open on several occasions. Open to the public all year round the club boasts three 18-hole championship courses, football pitches used for training by teams from all European leagues, tennis courts, a pitch & putt course, cricket, squash, swimming pools and a gymnasium. There are also restaurants, a 5-star hotel with nightly entertainment and a casino.
Other courses in this haven for golf enthusiasts within easy driving distance are Villamartin, Las Ramblas, Campoamor, Altorreal, La Finca, etc. In fact, you could try a different course each day of the week.
Diving is a popular sport and there are a number of different diving schools offering anything from the beginners’ course to night dives for the more experienced diver. The dive around Isla Grosa, for example, takes around 1 hour and takes you through the magnificent quartz caves.
The historic towns of Cartagena (30 mins away) and Murcia (60 mins drive) are well worth visiting for the shopping, Roman monuments, ruins of Roman theatre and sightseeing. Cartagena is full of interesting architecture, many museums and an ancient port plus a number of interesting examples of military and modernist exhibits and architecture. The shopping in the historic centre is great, and Cartagena also has an upmarket Corte Ingles department store.
Spend a day during summer months with your children at a water park in nearby Torrevieja.
