The Costa Calida/Murcia region
The Costa Calida in Spanish means warm coast and LaManga means the sleeve, Hola! means hello and you will need to know that because the Spanish in this area are very friendly and hospitable. This part of Spain is said by the world health authority to be the healthiest place in the world because of the abundance of salt which has been recovered here since roman times.
The Mar Menor is a inland sea with a high mineral level, crystal clear shallow water and beautiful sandy beaches it is slightly more bouyant than the sea and the temperature is always 3 degrees higher than the Mediterranean. If while lazing on the beach you spot people walking by covered in mud or even on just an arm or leg or a knee these are THE MUD PEOPLE , the mud is believed to be very therapeutic, people leave it on all day, there are mud baths! at various places around the Menor we have one about 20 mimutes walk away, local Brits have been known to sneak down there and try it out.GIVE IT A GO.
La Manga although 18 K"s long is very narrow there is a point where if you stand in the middle and throw stones you can hit both the Mar Menor and the Med. La Manga although narrow is full of nooks and crannies great beaches, fabulous restaurants, marinas and some fantastic little beach bars. Sit and watch the sun go down you just have to find them.Bikes will take you to places a car won:t even think about.
Visit Cartagena, if you have children take the train from Los Nietos it takes 1/2 an hour and costs less than a euro (2 trains an hour) it travels over the calblanque hills and through all the old mine workings its a good trip. Murcia and Lorca among many others are well worth visiting BUT you are here to relax so don:t overdo it just come back next year and try again.
La Manga Del Mar Menor / Playa Paraiso, La Manga Del Mar Menor area
Next to Playa Paraiso is Playa Honda a 10 minute walk from our house there you will find 2 British bars/restaurants the Apicoco and Brambles and 4 Spanish, one, the Malvinas offers high quality food and wine expensive by Spanish standards but cheaper than London prices, the Juliet is mainly a restaurant but has a separate bar, and the Casablanca renowned for its menu del dia served from about 1 till 6 its very popular with the ex pats, after 6 its mainly a bar but serves great Tapas further along the prominade is Julians bar again very popular but he forgot to renew his licence and so got shut down (temporary watch this space).
10 minutes further along the beach is another restaurant/bar at the back of the camping caravan club again very popular.Honda also has a small but very well equipped supermarket and a chemist, very good at herbal remedies.
Going the other way along the beach just around the corner is a very classy Spanish restaurant and just beyond that a very novel cocktail beach bar check it out. *Cabo de Palos just go there,in the morning for a coffee, the afternoon for a walk, the evening for a meal, midnight for nightlife. *Los Belones avoid during the day ,night time "super" good restaurants too many to mention an indian a takeaway kebab shop open till 0300 and a village square very big drinks get a taxi home only 5 minutes. *La Manga club set in the calblanque hills above Los Belones sports 3 championship golf courses a casino evening entertainment restaurants bars including the very popular SI bar. Within an hour of our house are many more championship golf courses.
Other places to try out include Cavanna Square home to Yans bar AKA the St James best bar on the strip. Bohemia Square with a nightly flea market and the ice cream parlour is a must. Zoco Alhambra for late night life. The Tomas maestre marina for a day time look at the boats and for a night-time meal on the outer harbour wall You can take a ferry trip from here to San Pedro on the **mainland** morning trips are best you may get the Spanish air force practising overhead. Over the bridge at venicola. And not forgetting the children there are play groups parks and waterborne theme playgrounds in very shallow parts of the Menor.
I could just keep going on but I've got to stop somewhere.
How to get there
