The Costa Calida/Murcia region
The Costa Calida (the Warm Coast) enjoys superb weather with 315 days of sunshine per year. Even in Winter there is an average temperature of 18 degrees C. The warm waters of the Mar Menor (an inland sea) offer a wealth of water sports, with sandy beaches which gently slope into the sea and there are several golf courses within a short drive. There are numerous typically Spanish villages in the surrounding areas offering quality restaurants serving the ‘catch of the day’ and traditional Spanish menus with evening entertainment in the many local bars.
The Costa Calida is an area steeped in history. Only a short drive away is Murcia, the regions capital, with it’s narrow streets, magnificent Cathedral along with the cosmopolitan shops. Inland offers conservation areas with a wide range of bird life, horse riding, cycling, walking, climbing, and the chance to savour the rural sights. The area is an historical adventure with cave dwellings and paintings, incredible architecture and museums. A perfect place for an energetic or relaxing holiday.
The city of Cartagena is only 20 minutes drive away, the old Roman Theatre and paved Roman roads can still be seen, along with the National Museum of Maritime Archaeology offers an insight into shipping in the days long since gone. Whilst driving along the lemon grove lined roads into the Murcian hills, many traditional Spanish villages can be found with their village markets and traditional restaurants, along with the friendly locals tempting you to enjoy a glass of sangria. There really is something for everyone in the Costa Calida. There are 2 airports - San Javier, only a short 20 minutes from La Manga and Alicante airport, which is approximately one hours drive away.
La Manga Del Mar Menor / La Manga Strip area
La Manga is situated in the Province of Murcia in a coastal area which boasts one of the most moderate climates in Spain, with more days of sunshine than other mainland areas and water temperatures higher than average. As a result it has become known as the “Costa Calida” - the “Warm Coast”. It is a strip of sand, approx. 22kms. long, which forms a “barrier” and encloses the “Mar Menor” (Minor Sea) and separates it from the “Mar Mayor” (the Mediterranean). There are over 44km. of beaches, narrower but with protected bays and coves on the side of the Mar Menor, and longer, wider expanses of pure golden sand fronting the Mediterranean. Considering the vast effort needed to keep them clean, it was awarded the “Blue Flag” - in accordance with the regulations laid down by the European Community. It is an area which offers many alternative types of holiday and recreation and is becoming one of the most important tourist centres on the Mediterranean coast. It offers a selection of beach-side holidays, and, restaurants, bars, plus shopping complexes and a night-life which are there to meet the demands of every holidaymaker.
The shallow waters and the absence of tides make the Mar Menor the ideal place for all types of water sports. An initial advice is that you should visit La Manga driving your own car or (if you come here flying) renting a car. You can, also, rent a bike, a scooter or a bicycle in local La Manga rental places. There is a public bus service in La Manga and Cabo de Palos. Cabo De Palos also has a fantastic market every Sunday morning.
During the summer months there is a market in Plaza Bohemia (100 Meters) every evening until late. There are plenty of local bars and restaurants to sit and have a drink. Zoco is only a 5 minute walk away where you can party the night away. The local area's are very child friendly and cater for your children's needs.
Fly to Murcia (San Javier) - Monte Blanco is just 20 Mins from the airport. Cheap flights available from Ryanair.com from Stanstead or Luton to Murcia (SJV) or Alicante airport. More cheap flights from Easyet and Monarch Airlines.
