The Costa Calida/Murcia region

A history of La Manga strip

The History Of La Manga Del Mar Menor Strip To the far Southeast of the Province of Murcia, there is a large expanse of water called the Mar Menor. An enormous lagoon, approximately 26 kilometres long and 7 kilometres wide, famous for it's warm, tranquil and salty water.
The La Manga Strip, a barrier island protecting the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean Sea, is approximately 18 kilometres long, 900 metres at it's widest point and 50 metres at it's narrowest.

The La Manga Strip reached it's present configuration in the 1600's, emerging from centuries of sand being pushed by sea currents onto an under-water volcanic range which stretches up to Cabo de Palos. This formed a long peninsula of sand dunes which connected the Mar Menor with the Mediterranean through the Golas or canals of El Estacio, El Charco and El Ventorrillo.

The history of La Manga is closely related to fishermen and pirates who, for centuries, operated in the Mediterranean.

Within the Mar Menor are five islands. To the South are three small islands. Isla del Ciervo, Isla Ronda and Isla del Sujeto. At the centre are two more. La Isla Mayor or Isla del Barón (Baron Island) privately owned with it's tall watchtower and 200 year old villa, and La Isla Perdiguera, 1 kilometre square, previously famous for it's part played during the Spanish Civil War and now famous for it's superb beachfront fish restaurants.

Just outside in the Mediterranean (The Mar Mayor), are three more islands. The military island of La Grossa, El Farallon reef and Isla Hormigas crowned by a white lighthouse.

These days, beautiful sandy beaches and promenades surround the Mar Menor, and further inland palm plantations, farmland and volcanic mountains can be seen. The surrounding towns and villages host a variety of bars, restaurants and tourist attractions, with many traditional fiestas throughout the year.

La Manga Del Mar Menor / Los Miradores del Puerto area

Plenty to do. Watersports, beach, shopping, eating out and sightseeing.

Golf

There are countless golf courses in and around La Manga. Just a few minutes drive from the end of the strip, La Manga Club has been voted Europe's top resort for golfing holidays three times in the last five years. There are three 18 hole championship courses at La Manga Club, and also a Par 47 18 hole pitch and putt course.

Tennis

Featured at the heart of La Manga Club is one of the most highly regarded tennis centres in Europe. Venue of Davis and Federation Cup matches, it offers 28 tennis courts, 20 clay, 4 hard (green set) and 4 artificial grass and most are floodlit. The Tennis Centre, now the established 'Official Winter Training Base' for the Lawn Tennis Association, has a host of top facilities available including 28 multi surface tennis courts, extensive gym and health club, swimming pool and pro shop.

Fishing

Just about anywhere on the strip can be fished from. The more serious fishermen hire boats at the Thomas Maestre harbour whilst many can be seen fishing around harbour points where there are many fish.

I personally have had 12 fish on the hook one after the other so it must be a good area to fish! Sardines are the main catch particularly in the Mar Menor and Mullet are easily caught in harbour areas.

Beaches
With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, swimmers and sun worshippers will find plenty of locations to swim or just lie by the pool! There are numerous other beaches in the local area, on both Mediterranean and Mar Menor coasts. The Mar Menor beaches are particularly popular with families with young children, because the warm, shallow water offers bathing fun for all ages. Mar Menor, or Little Sea, is a unique area running the entire left side of the strip. The huge saltwater lake is the largest in Europe, separated from the Mediterranean by glorious white beaches and the vibrant resort of La Manga. As well as its natural importance, Mar Menor's waters are known for their healing properties, and it is still a place of recreation and relaxation.

Eating Out
As you can imagine, the area caters for all style of eating out from discreet restaurants on the strip to a multitude of eateries catering for all tastes at the Thomas Maestre marina. This marina area (a 15 minute walk away) is particlulary pleasant to go to on a nice warm night where you can eat inside or outside at a leisurely pace watching the world go by and afterwards head to the cocktail bars in the area. The marina is a lovely discreet place to eat whether for a romantic meal for two or a family meal you are sure to find something to please here! There is a very good Italian restaurant and a Belgian Creperie with fantastic views of the sunset across the Mar Menor. Other restaurants include a Mexican, Asian, traditional Spanish restaurants and restaurants specialising in barbeques. The typically Mediterranean style of cooking is available in local restaurants, this includes paellas, fresh fish, freshly grilled meats and succulent salads, normally using locally grown produce. Fish and shellfish fresh from the sea are prepared on hotplates, or as ingredients in the locally famous Caidero, a typical rice dish. Fresh fruit and vegetables from the fields of Cartagena are abundant. Salted fish are still cooked following techniques from the Roman era.

Boat Trips
The foot ferry provides a regular service from the marina across the Mar Menor to the town of Santiago de la Ribera. The trip across the lake is very pleasant and takes half an hour. A market is held on Wednesdays and the Spanish equivalent of the Red Arrows practices here, so you will often see an impressive air display. There are excellent sandy beaches at Santiago and some interesting shops. It is relaxing to sit at one of the cafes on the front just watching the world go by or to have lunch in one of the fish restaurants on the beach.

The Med boat trip takes about one hour and takes you on a route past the apartment and around a small island which is popular for divers and snorkellers. The water is so clear that the boat stops to allow you to view the marine life through the boat's glass bottom. There are also longer boat trips in the Mar Menor which drop you off at an island for the day. Diving trips and boat hire can be arranged at the marina.
