The Costa Calida region
The region of Murcia boasts over 300 days of sunshine every year, a safe bet to get the weather and suntan we so crave here in the UK.
The local area around Mar de Cristal is very fertile and ideal for crop growing. You can freely watch the farmers in the fields tending their crops the produce of which can be bought at the many local markets in the area. It is also not unusual to see the local shepherd pass by tending his flock of sheep and goats in the fields close to the resort.
The Spanish village of Los Belones is only 5 minutes away by car or 20 minutes by foot. Los Belones is an all-year-round village with many authentic bars and restaurants serving the best in typical local cuisine. The local market in the village takes place on Tuesdays from 8.00am to 2.00pm. Here you can purchase locally produced fruit and vegetables at rediculously low prices.
On Sundays, everyone converges on the main market at Cabo de Palos just at the start of La Manga strip. Cabo is a fabulous, unspoilt Spanish fishing village with a beautiful marina and seafront hosting many amazing seafood restaurants overlooking the Medtiteranean. Ideal for people watching having Sunday lunch or for just whileing away the hours over a well earned refreshing drink.
Whilst in the area, a visit to La Manga Strip is a must. La Manga strip is a unique sleeve of land which extends for a distance of some 24 kilometers and seperates the Mediteranean sea from the salt water lagoon of the Mar Menor. The strip boasts a multitude of shops, bars, restaurants and has miles and miles of the most fabulous beaches on both sides. Take the bus from Los Belones getting off as and when you choose as you work your way up the strip to the famous port of Thomas Maestre at the northern end of the strip where you can stop and have lunch in the magnificent marina.
For city lovers, the historic city of Cartegena is a 20 minute bus ride away ( regular departures from the village of Los Belones ), or you can take the mini train over the mountains from the nearby village of Los Nietos ( cost approx 1 euro ). Cartagena is a city worth visiting. It is a major stop for Mediteranean cruise ships, has a fabulous marina area where you can board local tourists boats for a tour of the historic harbour. Conquered by the Romans in the 1st century, Cartagena is the city where Hannibal set out to walk his elephants over the Alps and into battle in defence of the homeland. The city has a recently restored Roman amphitheatre and a museum in which you can view the original city walls as built by the Romans all those years ago.
The Calle Major, adjacent to the port promenade, is the cities main shopping area with shops catering for all tastes and budgets. Restaurants and bars abound in this area serving various tapas, menus of the day, drinks and snacks.
La Manga Del Mar Menor
Mar de Cristal is a typical Spanish beach resort in S.E. Spain and sits on the shores of the famous Mar Menor salt water lagoon. Both the resort of Mar de Cristal and the complex at Albatross 3 are ideal for both families and for those seeking a quieter more relaxed break.
The villa is a 5 minute walk from the beach front at Mar de Cristal. The beach itself is ideal for young children as the waters of the Mar Menor are always warm due to the shallow depth and the protection offered by La Manga, the unique strip of land which seperates the Mediteranean from the much calmer lagoon.
The beach front promenade offers a variety of bars and restaurants providing both traditional Spanish and English menus.
Why chose Mar de Cristal?
Mar de Cristal is perfect for both couples seeking a quiet, relaxing break and for families with young children who want the security of a gated complex in a peaceful resort.
Albatros 3 is a small development with villas and apartments located around a very private shared swimming pool in beautiful secure landscaped gardens. A kiddies pool is attached to the main pool and the pool is in view of the rear patio area of the villa.

The beach is quiet and ideal for young children as the waters of the sheltered Mar Menor are calm and 2 to 3 degrees warmer than the nearby Med. The lagoon is is a mecca for water sports with sailing, kayaking, wind surfing, jet skiing, snorkelling, fishing and scuba diving all popular activities available a Mar de Cristal.
Tennis is another popular activity with the Spanish, and Mar de Cristal boasts a fabulous tennis club which is freely open to visitors to the area. The club includes a kiddies play area, outdoor swimming pool, gymnasium plus a number of padel tennis and full sized tennis courts. The club is set in a virtual oasis with a restaurant and bar available throughout the day. A must see on any visit.
Venturing inland from the beach, hill walking around Lion Mountain and cycling along the many off-road cycle tracks are popular activities. Bicycles and quad bikes are available for hire in the resort. The nature reserve of Calblanque is only 10 minutes away by car and offers secluded, unspoilt beaches and a rugged coastline ideal for walking and hiking.
For the golfer, the area has several top golf courses all within 30 minutes drive from the resort. These include Las Sirenas, La Roda, Hacienda del Alamo and Polaris World's Mar Menor golf.
