The Costa Tropical region
The Costa Tropical is unique because of its sub-tropical climate making it an ideal holiday destination in summer and winter. Sheltered by the local mountains the average temperatures are usually several degrees warmer than the Costa Del Sol.
Granada, Nerja, Almuñecar, Motril and Salobreña are the most popular destinations among tourists. The extensive beaches with clear blue waters have been repeatedly awarded the exclusive eco-label Blue Flag, which confirms the high quality and cleanness of the Costa Tropical shoreline.
Nerja, its famous caves and the Balcon de Europa, Frigiliana (voted the prettiest village in Andalucia), Velez Malaga and Almuñecar with their Water Parks and of course the busy town of Malaga with the famous Picasso museum are great places to visit whilst staying in the area.
Alternatively just 40 minutes of breath taking scenery will take you up through the mountains and famous Alpujarra regions to Granada and the Alhambra Palace (www.alhambradegranada.org) , and in the winter months a further 30 minutes drive will take you up to the famous ski resort of the Sierra Nevada (Nov-April). For keen golfers Motril has a superb 18 hole golf course running along the Mediterranean, and many more golf clubs can be found along the coast towards Malaga.
This is an excellent location to relax, enjoy the fabulous scenery, the excellent restaurants and bars and revel in the old Spain, often described as one of the Costa del Sol´s best kept secrets, and as such is largely untouched by the mass tourism of other areas of the Costa del Sol further west.
The winter months give you the rare opportunity of skiing up in the mountains in the mornings and returning to the coast to relax on the beach in the afternoons.
The La Herradura / Almuneca area
La Herradura is one of the few remaining unspoilt villages on the southern cost of Spain and offers a truly Spanish experience. A small friendly Andalucian seaside village, with narrow streets, tapas bars and a wide range of reasonably priced restaurants and beach front chiringitos specializing in locally caught fish. The daily indoor market sells fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish and the village bakery has a delicious selection of fresh bread and pastries. There are also grocery shops, chemist, dentist, health centre, internet cafe, bank and hair-dresser in the village. Larger supermarkets can be found in nearby Nerja and Almuñecar.
The excellent beach offers a wide range of watersports, sailing, windsurfing, snorkelling, diving, jet-skiing etc. There are various scuba diving centres and clubs located in the village, as well as Marina del Este, Almuñecar and Motril. Paragliding is another popular sport enjoyed in this area.
5 mins drive to the east is the Marina del Este, where it is possible to charter a skippered sailing boat for a day or half-day, play tennis, visit the lovely secluded beach, with a fantastic chiringuito (beach restaurant) or relax by the Marina. There is an excellent Scuba-Diving school (www.divingfinder.com/spain/marina-del-este/scubadiving.html).
A perfect location to relax and enjoy the ´real´ Spain.
Cantarrijan Beach, just to the other side of the Cerro Gordo, is one of several naturist beaches in the area and has two excellent restaurants.
The headland of Cerro Gordo Natural Park provides several fascinating local walks with fabulous panoramic views.

The previous reviews say it all. We spent 2 weeks in August in this apartment and thoroughly enjoyed it. The apartment is well layed out, clean and comfortable. The views from the balcony and roof top terrace are fantastic. The pool, although small, was very welcome in the August heat. The walk down to the beach takes about 10 minutes. The journey back takes longer as the climb is steep in places particularly if using the steps and slopes between the apartments. La Herradura is quiet and ideal if the larger, noisier resorts are not your cup of tea. There are plenty of restaurants and several small supermarkets. We particulary recommend the Hotel Almijara, which offers a lunchtime and evening buffet for 10 euros per person. There was an excellent choice of food, which was well presented and very tasty. During our stay we managed to visit Alhambra Palace (a must), Ronda, Nerja, Frigiliana, Motril and Almunecar. During the second week of August there is a fiesta which ends on the 15th with a fantastic firework display. We also enjoyed an hour long windsurfing lesson at the winsurfing school on La Herradura beach. The staff spoke excellent English, were knowledgeable, friendly and patient with complete novices. We would not hesitate to recommend this apartment. Susie and Jose were friendly and helpful, particularly when the car lift was out of action during our stay. We greatly appreciated the use of a storeroom for our cases on our departure day as our flights were very late in the evening. Thank you Susie and Jose for a very relaxing and enjoyable holiday. |

Guestbook for Balcones del Mar
"Just returned from holidaying in this apartment and I would have no hesitation, or reservations, in recommending it, and La Herradura, to anyone considering a holiday here. Although I didn't get to meet Susi she was a pleasure to deal with prior to arrival and her husband Jose, who we met on arrival, was a gentleman. The apartment itself is very modern and very well equiped. It was spotlessley clean and tastefully furnished and the towels and bed linen were of a very high quality. The views from the balcony and the master bedroom are fantastic and at around 6.00 o'clock p.m. the sun starts to move around the bay and goes down across the bay from the apartment about 10.00 o'clock. It was lovely just to sit on the balcony with a glass of wine and follow it down. The rooftop has the sun all day so on particularly lazy days we lay around the pool, which we more or less had to ourselves, on the loungers supplied with this apratment. There was a lovely cool sea breeze which was most welcome. Other days we spent on the beach and there is some really nice food to be had in the beach front bars and restaurants. La Heradurra has everything you would need, from banks (with ATM machines) to supermarkets, pharmacies, internet cafes and shops. The apartment is 10 min walk from the beach front which we did every day as we didn't have a car. As the apartment is at the top of a hill the walk back is steep in parts but zig zagging through the old white washed cobbled streets took the edge off it. It was actually a nice exercise each day. I am 49, my wife 47 and my kids 16 and 13 and we managed it each day quite easily, sometimes more than once. There is a smaller supermarket 5 mins walk from the apartment. Overall La Herradura is a quiet, very friendly place and provided the perfect relaxing holiday we were after." Dermot, June 2011

Booking a holiday in a new location and renting an apartment that you've found via the internet has its pre-arrival concerns. We shouldn't have worried at all - the apartment was great, and the view was more than we'd hoped for across the bay of la Herradura and its surrounding hills. Eating on the terrace was always a treat and the pool on the roof terrace was a real added bonus. The apartment was very well equipped with all the necessities and much attention had been paid to the detail; it was very clean and very comfortable. Due to the thoughtfulness of the owners, nothing extra was needed and it was very much a home from home for the week. We were more than pleased on our arrival and very soon relaxed into the gentle atmosphere of la Herradura. The village has everything practical in terms of supermarkets and a very good mix of beach restaurants, perfect to watch the sun go down with good, authentic Spanish food. If you’re looking for a great holiday in an unspoiled part of the Spanish coastline, then la Herradura is the place to go. It is a gem of a place to have a relaxing holiday. We feel very pleased to have spent a week there and can only look forward to going to this specific apartment again. We would, with no hesitation, recommend the apartment and la Herradura. This apartment is a real gem! The location is wonderful, set up on the hill in la Herradura, the balcony gives you fabulous views of the bay and the mountains. It is a very quiet and peaceful part of the town. It has a very secure underground garage to leave your car. The apartment was beautifully and tastefully furnished. It was immaculately clean, and the owners had thought of everything, even down to the cool bag & Ice blocks to take on our picinics! The view from the master bedroom is breathtaking at all times of the day, but we can thoroughly recommend enjoying it whilst being propped up in bed with a morning cup of tea. Having the swimming pool on the roof was a real bonus, the patio up there is huge, but also quite secluded, we wouldn´t hesitate staying in this property again, and have recommended it to many of our faimily and friends.

Arrived home with no problems and on time, loved our holiday in your lovely well equipped apartment, the views are stunning , got some great photos, once again thank you for a great relaxing holiday.
Deborah & Colin, April/May 2010
Apart from the magnificent climate and great weather, the views are magnificent from the apartment. The facilities are as shown in the photographs, but what the photos do not show is the attention of the owners who are super friendly and incredibly attentive to all your needs. We are a group of 6 people from Granada City and Aranjuez, Madrid, and we want to congratulate the owners of the apartment. Thank you very much. Ricardo, December 2009.
We don't think we would ever get bored with the view from the apatment balcony, missing it already!
The apartment is wonderful, particularly well equipped and extremely comfortable. Although we were a party of 5 adults, we never felt cramped or that we were living on top of each other. The roof top pool was well used and most enjoyable. The balcony was brilliant. We cannot think of any improvements, which could be made, we were totally satisfied with all aspects of the apartment, in fact it is fair to say our expectation level was high and the apartment surpassed our expectations - very impressed. With thanks, James, October 2009
If you genuinely seek to stay away from British tourists and to enjoy the hospitality offered in a typical and uncontrived Spanish village, then La Herradura is the ideal place for just relaxing and enjoying the wonderful food offered in the various local markets and restaurants and for touring the surrounding stunning mountains and beautiful coastline. We were also very fortunate to enjoy a local flamenco evening over the festive season. An ideal location for a Winter/Christmas holiday – the weather was glorious.”

Spanish Family, Semana Santa 2009 (Easter 2009)
