The Andalucia region
Situated on the Costa Tropical, a part of the South Coast of Spain so called because of its own tropical micro climate and wide variety of fruits grown in the area, La Herradura ('horseshoe') and its spectacular secluded and picturesque horseshoe shaped bay lie at the foot of the Alpujarra mountain range. The weather here has been said to be the best in all continental Europe with 300 days of sunshine each year and an average winter temperature of almost 20 degrees Centigrade.
Some 70km east of Malaga (1 hour drive from the airport) and within reach of the Sierra Nevada Ski resorts and the historic city Granada, this very friendly unspoilt Spanish village offers a variety of daytime activities and plenty of bars and restaurants in which to relax, eat, and drink.
La Herradura doesn't attract the mass influx of tourists found on the Costa del Sol. There are no high rise hotels and in places the land adjoining the 2 kilometre long boulevard is not built on at all, with local market gardeners taking advantage of the warm Mediterranean climate to grow fruit and vegetables.
Modern seafront cafes, bars and restaurants back onto a traditional spanish village with its daily covered food market and bakeries. The pace of life is unhurried, epitomised by the old men of the village as they sit in the sunshine talking with their lifetime long friends, and it is easy to fall into the relaxing atmosphere, sunbathing on the beach interrupted only by drinks and tapas in the local bars and restaurants.
For those of a more active disposition there are a number of more energetic pursuits. La Herradura is famous for its clear water and underwater life and boasts a number of Scuba Diving Schools. There is excellent walking in the Alpujarra and the hills behind the town are used extensively for paragliding.
The Western end of the bay is sometimes used for surfing. On the beach exercise machines are available at no cost, Kayaks, water scooters and pedal boats are available for rental. There is also a windsurfing and dinghy sailing centre. where tuition is available.
The village is separated from the pretty but busier town of Nerja some 11 kilometres to the West by the rugged coastline and hills of the National Park of Los Acantilados de Maro which provide wonderful walking opportunities. To the East there is a small harbour at Porte del Este, the small beach hamlet of Cotobro and the ancient provincial town of Almuñecar (founded by the Phoenicians in 800 BC) with its busy Friday market just 5 minutes away by car.
There is a good bus service to both Nerja and Almuñecar
For sightseers, other excursions include the caves at Nerja, the quaint village of Cómpeta, rustic eating in Otivar, the hilltop town of Salobriña, and of course for shoppers, the very up together cities of Granada and Malaga.
