The Costa Tropical/Granada region
Although not nearly so well known as the neighbouring Costa del Sol to the west. The Costa Tropical of Granada province is particularly picturesque beachside, and easier to get away from the crowds.
The mountains run right down to the sea and the coastline is typically a series of coves and promontories. There is La Herradura which is pretty and unspoilt and located betwen the two attractive promontories of Punta de la Mona and Cerro Gordo
Nearby in a protected cove east of Punta de la Mona is the impressive Marina del Este yacht harbour. Water sports and scuba diving are popular here, thanks to the variety of sea life and clarity of the water.
The white village of Salobreña is worth a visit. Here you will be torn between visiting the moorish castle and the beach. The sugar cane plantations here confirm the name Costa Tropical.
Becoming increasingly popular among foreign residents are the numerous attractions of of the town of Almuñecar
La Herradura area
The beautiful bay of La Herradura is one of the prettiest bays along the south coast of Spain. Two huge natural promontories Punta de la Mona and Cerro Gordo protect 2km beach with a lovely selection of bars and restaurants. The village has typical and traditional whitewashed buildings climing the gentlehill from the beach. Cerro Gordo is also a natural special protected area where you can see a sort of mediterranean and rare plant species and the tropical micro climate can be noticed by the number of palms, exotic gardens and fruit trees in the area such as mangos, avocados, sugar cane, banana trees…this kind of climate is produced by a lucky combination of south orientation of the coast, the nearness of the sea and the chains of mountains "sierras" which protect this coast from any northern influence. All kind of water sports available in La Herradura. Famous scuba diving location with two diving schools. Lots of restaurants, bars and typical beachfront bar-restaurants where to enjoy the typical Spanish “tapas”. Spanish style fried fish is the most typical food but also you´ll find in a number of restaurants cooking from inner Málaga and Granada province (like Las Alpujarras or Axarquía).
