The Tenerife region

Tenerife is one of the Canary Islands. It offers all year round sunshine with good temperatures. There is an average temperature of 25º in the summer and 20º in the winter so is ideal at any time of the year.

Tourism is synonymous with bright sunshine and swimming in the sea. With over 350 kilometres of coastline,a wide variety of beaches with golden or volcanic sand, family-friendly beaches, hidden beaches, nudist beaches ……that's without including the unique natural seawater pools of Tenerife.

The stunning scenary lets you be in contact with nature. There are many mountain paths ready for exploration.

La Guancha

For those who seek peace and quiet without isolation and a moderate sunny climate in an area where serious crime is virtually unknown, La Guancha in the North of Tenerife is the place to go!

La Ruta del Agua and Barranco Ruiz are two footpaths through the mountains, ideal for ramblers. Forest tracks around the village offer some different views of Mount Teide and a recently created recreation area at El Lagar includes barbecue facilities and a children's playground.

In the nearby town of Icod de los Vinos you can experience a visit to one of the largest lava caves in the European Union. The Cueva del Viento (Cave of the Wind) underground complex is now open to the public Tuesday to Saturday. www.cuevadelviento.net for more information.

However, if rambling isn't your thing and you prefer the sea then Charco del Viento is the local beach. As Tenerife is a volcanic island, the beaches in the north are rocky; however these small rock pools are ideal for swimming and fishing. The beach at San Marcos isn't far either.

It's full of tradition with local shops and typical restaurants offering traditional canarian food and wine only a few minutes walk away.

The village is known for the quality of its white wine, which is produced under the Ycoden-Daute-Isora 'Denominacíon de Origen' and is noted for its golden colour and unusual taste. A good place to have a taste of this wine is the Bodega de Viñatico, a local vinyard only 50m away!

La Guancha Craft Workshop -A crafts centre and workshop where visitors can admire outstanding examples of traditional Canary Island pottery, while watching local potters at work. Access to the building is gained through a beautifully carved door that depicts traditional scenes of life in the town. The address is 4, Avenida Hipólito Sinforiano. It is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 to 6 p.m. and contains an assortment of rooms where local people produce and exhibit pottery, raffia, basketry, openwork, textiles, embroidery, traditional costumes, street clothes and carnival costumes.

If you're looking for local customs and fiestas then "Virgen de la Esperanza" on 15th August and "Virgin de Coromoto" at the end of May are worth experiencing. The world famous Tenerife Carnival is the second biggest in the world after Rio de Janeiro, a fantastic colourful sight with elaborate costumes & music and takes place at the beginning of Lent (usually February).

"Loro Parque" is the biggest tourist attraction in the north of the island and close to Puerto de la Cruz. Here you will find the world's largest parrot collection and many other animals including a spectacular dolphin show. www.loroparque.com

For the golfers, the Buenavista Golf course (designed by Seve Ballesteros) is a drive away along the north coastline and situated next to Buenavista beach.

There is a small horse riding stable in Cruz del Camino near Icod - Finca Estrella. Prices start from 50 euros for 3 hours.

Paragliding is available to try. Offices are in Santa Ursula, La Victoria and Puerto de la Cruz

"Charming, authentic with great view"

Casa Carmela is a lovely place to stay, off the tourist beaten track. An authentic house renovated to retain its charm. George and Lala do everthing they can to ensure you have what you needl when you get there and Karen is most helpful in booking. Plenty of patio space and rewarding views of the dominating, volcanic mountain, Teide, and of the Atlantic coast. We needed to be more aware that the North of Tenerife can be more cloudy and cooler than the South, depending on the wind direction..
Our high points were 1- the simple appeal of freshly cooked sardines and Papas Bravas (potatoes with tasty sauce) at the seaside restaurant in nearby San Juan de la Rambla (end of the road through the village).
2- An evening stroll and meal in the Heritage Quarter of La Laguna, following a tram trip down to Santa Cruz and back.
3- Enjoying the drama of the sea on the rocky coast when the wind is up.
You will need a hire car (very reasonable cost) and be prepared for steep hills.

We're so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and found some interesting places to visit.

"Very nice traditional house with good location."

We had a wonderful stay in Casa Carmela. The location is great - close to main attractions of the North of Tenerife - Puerto de la Cruz with Loro parque and Lago Martianez, La Orotava, Ikod de Vinos, Garachico etc. but it will be observed - car is needed.
The various terraces of the house were lovely and the views of Teide and the coast were spectacular. The house realy feels like a home, is interestingly decorated and equipped with everything you might want. The home owners, Jorge and Lala, were both extremely friendly, met us very cordially and showed us the house facilities. Thanks them and Karen for the our beautiful holidays, we very hope to return to this nice place.

We're so glad you enjoyed your stay. Hope to see you again!
