The Midi-Pyrenees / Aveyron region

Only recently easily accessible by air links and the new A20 motorway, Aveyron has been described as one of the last secret areas of France and Occitan is still spoken by many. The Aveyron has 10 of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France" (the most beautiful villages in France), more than any other department.
The major rivers of Lot, Aveyron and Tarn each have stunning gorges and now the world's highest viaduct bridge which spans the river Tarn at Millau has really helped put the region on the map.
Our SW corner of the Aveyron is an undiscovered delight. The area is heavily forested with oak and chestnut and full of river valleys which keep the region green even in high summer. The rivers are unpolluted and great for swimming. Medieval villages and towns abound but traffic jams and crowds are scarce even in August. The pace of life is slow and traditional markets still play an important part in this rural region as does gastronomy - cheeses from Roquefort, Rocamador, and Laguiole; wines from Gaillac, Cahors and Marcillac; locally produced pate du fois gras and saucisson. Plenty of good local restaurants including Michelin starred.
The La Fouillade area
La Fouillade is a bustling village with great shops - artisan bakers and butchers, grocers, pharmacy and small supermarket. It also has 2 cafes, 2 doctors, a bank and post office.
Nearby activities include: horse riding, canoeing, sailing, climbing, accrobranche, mountain biking, and pottery. Medieval towns within an hour's drive include: Najac, Villefranche de Rouergue, Cordes-sur-Ciel, St Antonin-Noble-Val, Belcastel, Figeac, Cahors. Also, Albi and Conques - both classed as World Heritage Sites.
Summer festivals include: medieval pageant at Cordes July 14th weekend; AfriCajarc music festival end of July; Najac fete 3rd weekend in August. Najac also has an annual Jazz Festival 1st weekend in September.

Guestbook for Viaur
Rose Family – Buckinghamshire (August 2010 & 2011)
We've had a wonderful week in this lovely gite and surroundings. The boys (ages 7 & 3) loved making friends with the animals, paddling and sailing their boats on the river, swimming in the pool. The castle at Najac was fun and even Nathan managed all the steps. We loved Lagarde Viaur – both the river and the crêperie – go early in the week as you'll want to go again! Great food and live music. Thanks Lucy for everything. Hope to see you again.
Goodhall Family – Farnham (July 2009)
Lovely week – kids had a fantastic time playing around the gite and down at the river. Beautiful area to explore with short day trips and time to return to have fun in the pool. Lucy has been a wonderful host and her girls have been great playmates for our kids. Thank you.
Jeffs family – London (July 2009)
First holiday since having children that I have truly managed to relax. Had everything we could have wanted for the kids (Isabella 3 and Oscar 15 months) who loved the trampoline and the swimming pool. Enjoyed visiting the ostrichs on our one rainy day and spent many happy hours by the river in sunnier times. An adult only dinner in Najac was a real treat. All in all a wonderful holiday. Thank you Lucy.
Jackson Family - Berkshire (September 2008)
A beautiful place. Very impressed with the home comforts of the gite and the helpfulness of Lucy. The area is fantastic – loved the medieval towns and villages. We don't know how Millie will manage without the animals. It is an idyllic spot for children. As for the pool – swimming with dolphins is so old hat – we have swum with frogs! Really sad to be going.
