The Normandy / Orne region
Normandy is well known as the original home of William the Conqueror and in more recent history as the location of the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944. Today, Normandy is a thriving area of Northern France with beautiful beaches and picturesque towns and villages, including Mont St Michel and Bayeux. Normandy is a haven for cyclists and walkers who enjoy the lovely countryside, especially in the area known as Suisse Normande (Swiss Normandy), so named because of its stunning rugged scenery. The area is also popular with canoeists who like to paddle on the River Orne.
Normandy produces delicious cheeses including the original Camembert (the town of Camembert is close by), meats and fresh vegetables. Apples grow in abundance and are used in Norman cooking and to make Calvados and some of the world’s best cider.
The climate is generally temperate though it can get quite warm in summer. In winter there is sometimes a little snow or frost.
La Ferriere Aux Etangs area
La Ferriere aux Etangs is a charming Normandy Village situated 1.5 hours due south of Caen ferry port midway between Flers and the medieval city of Domfront, in the Orne district of Normandy. The village has a full range of shops and amenities including welcoming bars, charcuterie and epicerie. A boulangerie-patisserie is located next door. There is a fishing lake adjacent to the village.
There are several restauarants nearby to satisfy every taste. For a quality gastronomic experience, we recommend Auberge de la Mine, which is only a couple of kilometres away. There are other delightful restaurants in nearby towns and villages.
How to get there
Travel by sea to Ouistreham (Caen), Cherbourg, St Malo or Le Havre and then drive to La Ferriere Aux Etangs. We find that the overnight ferry is best if you book a cabin, enabling you to arrive refreshed in the morning after your journey.
The fast ferry runs in the summer from some ports and can cut your journey time across the English Channel substantially.
Ryanair offer cheap flights to Dinard airport (near St Malo) from several UK airports. Check the Ryanair website for up to date information on routes and tariffs.
You can hire a car locally.
There is a rail link to Flers (10kms from the cottage) from Paris.
Taxis are always available from nearby towns. There is a taxi firm in La Ferriere Aux Etangs and buses run frequently to nearby towns, such as Domfront or Flers.
