Maison sur la Colline is a beautiful converted barn located in a stunning vine growing village in sunny South West France.

The spacious house runs over three floors. The first floor has an open plan newly fitted, well furnished kitchen, dining area and comfortable living room with UK television. Upstairs there are two good sized, well furnished bedrooms and both have newly fitted en-suite bathrooms. Downstairs the games room has a full size pool table and bed settee, for unexpected visitors,and a third bathroom with a bath. This property ideal for couples sharing or families.

Outside there are spectacular views of the local area from the very private pool and the terrace provides an ideal place for alfresco dining. There is also a large, secure driveway.

The spring water swimming pools at Alet les Bains, the beaches of the numerous swimming lakes, kayaking on the Aude, cycle hire and the Abbey at St.Hilaire are all a short distance from the house.

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

The house is located within easy reach of the town of Carcassonne with its famous medieval castle, as well as the Mediterranean beaches, the Spanish border (Barcelona 3hrs drive) and the Pyrenees.

The nearest town of Limoux sits on the river Aude and centres around a large town square which is bordered by bars, cafes & restaurants and hosts the town’s lively market every Friday.

Getting there is cheap and quick either with EasyJet or BA from Gatwick to Toulouse or Stanstead to Carcassonne with

La Digne d'Aval

La Digne d'Aval is typical of a sleepy circulate village of the region where the pace of life is very slow but you may find yourself here when there is a local fete and then there will be dancing in the streets literally.

Limoux just 7kms away is renowned for its sparkling wine Blanquette de Limoux said to pre-date champagne. It has to be tried and where better that at the summer night market held every week in July and August. Market day is every Friday in Limoux and Monday in the medieval and historic square of Mirepoix.

"Small Village Retreat"

This converted barn was an easy drive from Carcassonne airport (about 25 mins) just outside Limoux where there are several supermarkets. It's a very quiet circular village with no shops or bar, although if you're lucky the baker calls at 1pm most days. Views from the property across the valley are lovely, although the cemetery is just below and opposite! Parking at the property takes a bit of practice, but once lined up correctly it's fairly easy to back in.
The kitchen is well equipped and a small amount of essentials were in the cupboards. The fridge did leak and the coffee maker was broken but I'm sure those small bits have been sorted. The lounge is a little dark but has 2 comfy sofas and British TV. There are 2 flights of stairs leading from here. One down to the basement where there is a pool table, wine rack, a small (dark) bedroom and another bathroom. The other set of stairs (steep) lead up to the 2 double bedrooms; both with nicely finished ensuites. The mattress was a little lumpy and some of the bed slats needed repairing. Both bedrooms have velux windows.
Outside there was several good sitting areas – under a wooden canopy for breakfast, around the pool during the day and by the kitchen door for evening dinner.
The owners had left a photo album of how they transformed this village barn into a lovely cottage; very interesting. There was a welcome folder which was useful (when we found it – would have been better placed on the kitchen table).
It's a great place to explore the Cathar castles and beyond. The roads were quiet and the country side unspoilt.

So glad you enjoyed your holiday and thank you for your review on the property it is much appreciated. The village is a typically sleepy circulade village exactly as you have described. The leaking fridge seems to be intermittent but we are fairly sure it is repaired and the broken coffee pot has been replaced. We will check the mattresses and ensure bed slats are in the right place - this has never been mentioned before but is a good point. The room downstairs is not used as a bedroom just for storage by the owners and is usually kept lock - we will ensure this is locked for the next summer season. The welcome book is normally kept on the small table in the kitchen but if it was hard to find we can certainly move it onto the kitchen table. Thank you again for your input.
