The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Hautes-Alpes region
The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur region stretches from the hot Mediterranean coast to the cool Alpine mountains to the North. The climate changes appreciably, the further North you go, changing from the very hot sultry Provencal climate to the cooler, fresher conditions as you begin to climb into the Alps, leading to a beautiful and sunny landscape, but without the overpowering heat that you get further South.
The La Croix Haute / Les Lussettes area
The community of Lus la Croix Haute, sits at an altitude of 1040m above sea level and comprises 22 hamlets whose origins are firmly planted in agriculture. Historically the region is also known for its forestry and ice manufacturing, the only signs today are places with names such as “Les Glacières”. There are around 500 permanent residents but this number swells dramatically during high season when tourists flock from the south seeking relief from the heat of the Mediterranean sun.
The distinct and dramatic seasons can be attributed to Lus’ unique weather system; spring brings fresh green foliage after the harsh winter months, summer can be hot with frequent spectacular storms that rumble their way round the mountains, autumn is a picture of colour as the leaves turn to shades of red, yellow and orange. In all, a glorious palette of colours and textures that make each season well worth seeing. Winter months have been known to bring temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius at night, sometimes not rising above minus 8 during the day, but the air is crisp and dry and the sunshine and blue skies reflect in the snow to make the scene truly breathtaking.
If you fancy a change of weather and scenery you can always take a 30 minute “migration” south to the borders of Provencal territory, where the landscape becomes more undulating and temperatures rise by several degrees. There is also the Die valley to the west, Isère to the north and the Hautes Alpes to the southeast, all of which have their own unique identity.
If you have a penchant for wine then why not take an excursion into the Die valley and sample the local Clairette de Die sparkling wine. Southwest you can follow the wine route towards Orange passing vineyards every few miles where you can try the popular Côtes du Rhône and Vinsobres wines and also stock up on delicious olive oils.
Since 2008 Lus has become part of the Parc Naturel du Vercors and the valley of La Jarjatte is a Natura 2000 site, both of which recognise the regions importance as an area of outstanding natural beauty. The flora and fauna found in this region are thanks to the unique fusion of Alpine and Provencal weather systems.
If the great outdoors is your passion you couldn’t pick a more perfect holiday destination, with activities such as rambling, climbing and skiing in abundance. Whether you prefer to go it alone or take advantage of knowledgeable local guides, there is something for everyone. Lus provides an excellent base from which to explore this relatively undiscovered and breathtakingly beautiful corner of France.
