The Poitou-Charentes region

The department of Charente-Maritime is situated on the west coast of France between Nantes and Bordeaux. Beautiful sandy beaches line the coast and the area is famous for its oyster farms and salt flats. The historic port of La Rochelle lies at the centre of the department and is the access point for the Ile de Ré.

Foe maximum enjoyment you will need a bike – it is by far the easiest and healthiest way to travel. There are more than 60 miles of specially adapted cycle paths which link all the main villages and beaches. In addition, the island is exceptionally flat so hard work is kept to a minimum. You can hire bikes, child seats, carriages - you name it, from the multitude of rental shops throughout the island.

La Couarde

The Ile de Ré is a beautiful island just off the coast of La Rochelle which has managed to keep much of its authentic character. It is dotted with nature reserves where multitudes of wild birds and animals live, protected from the advance of technology and mankind. The island is famous for its salt, which is collected by salters towards the western end of the island, its oysters and its potatoes, all of which you can enjoy in the many restaurants scattered throughout the island’s villages.

The safe waters around the Ile de Ré are enjoyed by all watersports enthusiasts – windsurfers, yachtsmen and all sailors.

Summer market every day in the high season.

Miles of sandy beach - perfect for safe swimming or dingy sailing

Excellent sailing club in La Couarde which enjoyes a protected sailing lake - ideal for beginners.

"Beautiful house in a great central location on the island"

Fantastic for our two families of 5 (10 total). Only downside with small children is that the two kids bedrooms are at the other end of the house from the two en-suite double bedrooms.
BBQ works very well and there is plenty of outside eating space.
Great for pianists as there is a piano in the lounge.
We will definitely be back!

"Lovely holiday home"

The house is prettier than than the photos show, very well organised and very well located. It really is a 3 minute walk to a very beautiful beach, and the cycle paths. surrounded by some of the prettiest towns and villages on the island, it is a walk or 5 minute drive from a number of very good restaurants, bakeries and markets. Maire the owner was very helpful providing extra wood and advice when needed. We weren't very lucky with the weather, but we still had a lovely holiday in this delightful property and hope to return in warmer months!

"The perfect holiday home"

We couldn't recommend this holiday home highly enough!
We had a perfect week, in a beautiful house, along with 3 teenage children and grandparents. The house was clean, comfortable, stylishly decorated and extremely well-equipped. The enclosed garden made an ideal place to eat and relax.
The highlight of our holiday was cycling on the flat and scenic cycle paths that are extensive throughout the island and being able to visit the towns and villages on two wheels! As the owner recommended, we were able to have the rented bicycles delivered to the house at the start of the holiday. The close proximity to a beautiful beach also made this an ideal holiday base.

"great location"

House has loads of space and is ideal for 2 families. The BBQ and patio at the back is private and peaceful. The kitchen is really well stocked with everything you could need. The beach is about 5 mins walk and is quiet and large. The island is beautiful and we can't wait to return.

"A lovely relaxing holiday home."

We travelled to Ile de Re by car with our 2 dogs and arrived to find 13 La Passe a lovely treat at the end of a vey long drive! We stayed for 2 weeks and found the house to be clean, comfortable and really spacious which was needed as we were to be joined mid way through the holiday by my parents, my son and his girlfriend. The garden was a great sun trap and we spent afternoons lazing around in the sun. My dad has mobility problems and the downstairs double bedroom was perfect for him and my mum. My son and his girlfriend explored the Island by bike and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. My husband and I were in need of relaxation and we certainly found it on ile de Re. The local beach was dog friendly at this time of year and perfect for walking the dogs. All in all it was a lovely relaxing holiday and the facilities at 13 La Passe certainly contributed to us having one of the nicest holidays we have had in France. The Walsh & Marshall families.
