The Loire Valley / Indre region

The nearest town is the delightful market town of La Châtre, once a Roman camp or ‘ceastra’ from which it gets its name. There are one or two vestiges such as the Roman bridge that crosses the river Indre. There are also numerous wonderful medieval buildings in the centre, which leads to the market place where the Saturday market with dozens of stalls is a definite must to visit.
For river or lake swimming there are a number of places to choose from:
Sidialles: A tranquil lake near Culan, here you can swim from a sandy beach in safety under the watchful eyes of life-guards, hire pedaloes, sailboards, or canoes/kayaks, take long walks around the lake or have a meal or drink in the restaurant.
Eguzon: In the Creuse valley, this site offers swimming, sailing, water-skiing, sailboards, plus fishing, tennis, riding, walking. You can choose the calm lakes, lively rivers bordered by granite rocks, or cool streams in wooded landscapes. There are also plenty of places to eat and drink.
Chatelus-Malvieux: Another lovely lake for swimming from a sandy beach. Barbecue areas are laid out and you can walk around the site under the cool shade of its trees.
Herculat: This lake, near Treignat, offers swimming, fishing, restaurant and bar.
Golf - 18-hole championship golf course nearby, no handicap required and concessions for over 60's.
The La Chatre area
La Châtre has five supermarkets, several boulangeries, patisseries, charcuteries plus many traditional family-owned shops that offer a full range of goods and services. There are many restaurants, bars, a cinema with occasional English films, fabulous swimming pool facility, and the George Sand Museum.
Nohant (3km) is the home of author George Sand.
There is an international music festival during July at Chateau D'ars in the nearby village of Lourouer Saint-Laurent .

this was a retur visit to this gite. We were not disappointed. The English couple who own it cannot do enough to ensure a perfect holiday. It was extremely hot during our visit so the pool was an absolute delight. The gite stands in an acre of woodland so my bird watching was winderful with a hoopoo landing in the garden. The gite is beautifully apportined wyth many original byre features that lends a true rural feel. It is so peaceful it is tempting just to sit in the garden and let the peace heal. However the small town of Chatre is full of character and history with a wonderful market that is a must. I would highly recommend the hiring of a car if you are to make the most of the magical region of Berry,I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property and at the price it's a bargain get in there. One of our best holidays ever and that's not an over exaggeration! The accommodation was fantastic and had everything and more that you expect in self catering accommodation. Beautiful building with lots of character and charm but also with up to date appliances for us to make use of. Very comfortable and welcoming and very clean. The gite is right in the country, so quiet and peaceful. We especially enjoyed eating the freshly laid eggs from the friendly chickens! The garden is huge and has a variety activities to keep children (& adults) amused. The pool was great for cooling off on the hot days. There's also a bbq available to use - perfect for al fresco eating in the warm evenings. The nearest town, La Chatre is very charming, with lots of shops and restaurants and is only 5 minutes down the road. Huge market on Saturday (if I remember rightly) and has many stalls to wander around. There are so many places to visit, plus lovely large lakes to swim in and also lots of sign posted walks to take. The English owners are friendly and were extremely helpful and answered any questions we had. The gite is a wonderful place to holiday - good for relaxing & also good for exploring. We loved it so much, we have booked again for next summer and we cannot wait. Fantastic! |

the accommodation was adequate. Would be fine as a stopover en route to further destination. We stayed for 7 nights and found the double bed to be very uncomfortable, it should have been dumped a long time ago, our youngest son had flea bites down his back and on his head. The gas hob would not simmer so it was all or nothing! The mice running around at night was slightly annoying as well as the barking dogs outside the door. It is a rural retreat and we love the countryside but do like a comfortable bed at night. Owners friendly and helpful. Accommodation would be fine in the summer months but do not recommend when weather cooler as property does not retain heat. Response: The bedding and the mattress on the double bed were replaced spring 2011 including all pillows and duvets. The pine bedstead itself is 3 years old. As regards the gas hob, if we had have been made aware there was a problem we could have fixed it. I have now tried out the hob and it seems to work perfectly. I have no idea where the flea bites come into it as all my animals are treated for fleas once a month by spot on provided by our vet, and apart from the cat possibly straying in there when invited by the guests the animals are not allowed in the property. We were made aware that there had been a mouse, but we do live in the rural countryside and as the farmer had just mowed the field opposite, we do get mice on the property, but I must add it was actually in the barn not in the gite. As regards the dogs, yes we have dogs and yes from time to time they bark because there are strangers around, however once they realise there is no threat they are quiet. They never bark at night as they are locked away in our house. If we do get excessive barking we bring them in, we have never had any other complaints about them. As regards heating, there is a gas fire and an electric heater in the gite and guests are asked if they are warm enough, if not we do have extra heaters available. On this occasion we were informed that they didn't want extra as they didn't want to use the electricity, which I might add is included in the weekly rental. Poor standard of conversion, this confuses me because I have not had any complaints about fixtures and fittings etc. The building itself is over 100 years old and we wanted to maintain its original features by not covering over beams and stone walls with plasterboard. Just to end the people concerned actually paid at the end of their stay for an extra night So I really cannot agree with the negative review. |

Thank you for our lovely stay in this very tranquil part of France. We've loved the garden in particular, but lovely, cosy accommodation inside too.

This is the most wonderful place, life is so easy and laid back. Nobody could come here and not be totally relaxed. I have been here for 10 wonderful days and if I dared do a Shirley Valentine I would not go home, I could stay here for ever. I will be back as often as possible.
