About the home

Carefully renovated to retain its character with original exposed beams. La Porcherie is part of a 200 year old farm "Le Grand Pré" (the great meadow) which is set in a tranquil rural location with unspoilt views of the gently rolling countryside. A perfect setting for relaxing and a safe environment for the children to play. The site is set 200m off a quiet country lane with open fields all around and very private, yet only 8km (5 miles) from shops and amenities, including the local market and many excellent restaurants.
An area which still retains it's traditional french lifestyle with many chateaux, forests, lakes and rivers to explore,
there is an equestrian centre, fishing and 18 hole international golf course only 5 minutes away at Pouligny Notre Dame, if you prefer you can just relax or swim in the 11m x 4m heated swimming pool (28°C) no matter what the weather. You have exclusive use of the pool but the garden is shared with the owners.
An excellent base for walking, cycling or exploring.
The night sky in France is full of stars and a sight not to be missed.
See the Indre river just a short walk down the field.

The heated swimming pool (28°C) which is for your exclusive use is available April to October.
Welcome pack provided on arrival which consists of :-
French stick, croissants, semi-skimmed milk, butter, cheese, coffee, teabags, sugar and a bottle of wine.
All bed linen, towels, Pool towels, cleaning materials, gas, electricity, water and wood for the fire are included in the price.
Resident English owners live in the farmhouse across the garden and offer help and advice whenever needed.
Swimming pool only available from April to October, Heater only works if outside temperature exceeds 8°C.
Long term winter lets available November to March.

The Loire Valley / Indre region

Situated in the southern most area of the Loire valley bordering the Limousin (dept. 23) and Cher (dept. 18),
the Indre region is mainly a farming area unspoilt by tourism where the locals still retain their very french traditional values and lifestyle.

The La Chatre area

Les Dryads has an 18 hole International golf course at Pouligny Notre Dame,which is only a 5 minute drive, fishing, tennis courts, equestrian centre, rambling routes, many local markets, chateaux, historic churches and chapels.
The quiet country lanes make it an ideal area for cycling.
For wine lovers visit the vineyards of Chateaumeillant and sample the locally produced wines.
Watersports, swimming and inland beach at Sidiailles approximately 32km.
Many French explore this area made famous by the novelist Georges Sand, who was actually a woman writing under a mans name, her house and museum are open to the public and are situated at Vic which is only 14km away.

“Lovely, relaxing holiday” The gite is beautifully presented with an outdoor heated pool. The tranquility of the surroundings adds to the overall realaxing atmosphere. The owners are friendly and helpful, with everything you need provided.

“Relaxing and peaceful” On arrival we received a warm welcome from the Owners and the handover was very simple which included instructions on how to operate the swimming pool cover. La Porcherie has been beautifully converted into a very clean, cosy and comfortable holiday home which is fully equipped with everything you can think of, including a welcome pack (french stick, croissants, butter, jam, milk, cheese and wine) and sky television. The weather during our stay wasn't wonderful but we still managed to swim in the heated pool - 28`c! It was reassuring to know the English Owners were nearby but completely unobtrusive. The house is set in lovely countryside, perfect for walking and is only a short drive away from the local town La Chatre. We will definitely revisit. The Rosas, Hertfordshire.

“Relaxing, Tranquil, ideal base to either relax with family or visit local attractions” Andrew and Caroline, George (7) and Charlie (4) Davis - Oxfordshire We thoroughly recommend La Porcherie as a relaxing base to spend time unwinding. The Gite is kitted out with everything you would need to keep you in comfort during your stay (all home comforts and more). Phil and Tracy were great hosts and went that extra mile to make us feel comfortable, what with the welcome pack, fixing our bike and making my life more comfortable with my broken ankle. They kept a welcome but unobtrusive presence and added value to our stay. The pool is excellent - large, warm, clean and safe, the children (and adults) played in it every day with the inflatables. The location of the gite and orientation of the buildings gives it a beautiful sunny aspect with pool-side views over the gently rolling hills of the French countryside. The wildlife in the area is faily abundant with lizards, differing birds of prey, phesant and deer hiding in the field margins, not to mention the occassional toad we heard croaking to one another. There are plently of pleasant cycling and walking routes in the area too. The accommodation has been renovated with care and has a nice finish, retaining the exposed beams and classic french features that give it a contemporary appeal but is also fully modernised with plenty of space for a family of 4 or 5. There is plenty to do in the area, with La Chatre a short 5-10 minute drive away with a good choice of restaurants, supermarket and pleasant walks by the Indre River. There was a local event whilst we were in the town one evening with some traditional french music and dancing which was entertaining. We were lucky with the weather for the week with only one rainy day and decided to try out the local pool in La Chatre which was also excellent with a few water slides that the younger children and adults could go on, jacuzzi and sauna - remember not to take swiming shorts though. All in all, we can recommend La Porcherie and thanks Phil and Tracy for making our stay both relaxing and special.

“I would not hesitate to recommend this gite to anyone.” The experience was first class from start to finish. Booking was easy and the description of the property and surrounding area was very accurate and in no way misleading. I also received, by e mail, additional information regarding the best route to take without having to ask for it. The owners, who live on site, are friendly and very helpful without being in any way obtrusive. The property is excellent, thoughtfully designed and superbly appointed. The kitchen lacks nothing in the way of equipment and the "welcome pack" was just that. The lounge area is very comfortable, with "proper" furniture which, as I am well over six feet tall, is very important. We had mixed fortune with the weather, so, being able to sit in comfort in the lounge was essential. The heated pool, where we spent most of our time either in or beside, is scrupulously kept by the owner. Our ideal summer holiday is spent lazing around doing as little as possible and this was easily achieved at this location. I was aware however, that there were lots of suggested trips and visits in the literature in the gite if one wished to be a bit more adventurous. The gite sits in open country with a very pleasant vista and is very peaceful. As the nearest shops are 8k from the gite, transport is essential. This is made very clear in the on-line description however and the town, La Chatre, has everything needed in the form of supermarkets and local artisan-type outlets. We liked best the peace and quiet giving us the opportunity to relax, the view over the meadow, the swimming pool and, not least, the friendly, unobtrusive input from the owners. There was nothing that comes into the category of "Like least"

“A real gem of a place.” When we arrived we found the owners to be very welcoming and friendly. Fell in love with the place straight away and the surrounding area. Ideal for adventuring or just chilling out by the heated pool, which our teenage children loved. There was plenty of charming areas to visit and cycle round. Within easy reach of La Chatre where there are some beautiful restaurants with very friendly staff. We also enjoyed just strolling around the town. Thank you to The Andrews for letting us visit their idillic cottage and would love to holiday again soon.

“quiet beautiful area superb property with fantastic hosts” quite simply one of the finest places we have ever stayed brilliant value for money and very attentive owners who are willing to help whenever they can but you never feel they are intrusive the property is perfect with lovely bedrooms and a very well appointed kitchen great swimming pool and the view is to die for we felt relaxed straight away and 2 weeks was not enough

“A super place to go with children” We really enjoyed La Porcherie, a small but perfectly formed gite. The heated pool was brilliant for the children - even swimming in a thunderstorm! The location is very rural, so all around is farmland and wildlife - wonderful.

“A wonderful place to relax - even in winter” We have been here several times and each time we have enjoyed the warm welcome, the comfortable and well-equipped house, the lovely surroundings and La Chatre itself with excellent shopping and restaurants. We always go in winter so the swimming pool is unused but I suspect we would be in there all the time in summer! In winter the house is very warm indeed - a fire (stove) and central heating. This time we watched the snow fall. The kitchen is massive and everything is there to prepare all that good french food - when you aren't dining out at L'Estaminet (amongst others).

“Fabulous relaxing break with a great heated pool.” Lovely little house in a beautiful setting. Spotlessly clean with all needs catered for. Our hosts were welcoming and very friendly and always willing to help. The heated pool makes up for any grey days and being right next to the house means that watching the kids is much easier. Great views of the countryside and very relaxing.
