A bright, clean and comfortable house set in a small, friendly, peaceful village. A lovely welcoming feeling is immediately apparent as you enter our home.

The living space is comfortable and cosy, with original oak beams and a woodburning stove at its heart. There are two very comfortable double sofas, one of which opens out to make a double bed, and one single soft arm chair. The living room is equipped with large tv for use with video/DVD/CD player and MP3. There are limited english speaking news channels and some children's viewing on satellite but no BBC. This space opens onto the East facing front garden, where BBQ's can be enjoyed.

The kitchen is fully equipped, with cooker with gas and electric hobs, electric oven, fridge, washing machine, dishwasher, slow cooker, kettle and toaster. There is ample cutlery and crockery and a freezer in front garden shed.

The dining room is situated between the kitchen and the living room. There is a large round table and comfortable dining chairs with a second smaller table available for larger groups.

Climb the original stairway to reach the first floor, where you find the master bedroom, a twin room and the bathroom. The master bedroom looks onto the front garden and the village. It is light, spacious and has a comfortable king sized bed. The bathroom is white, bright and clean, with a large bath/shower, a sink and a toilet. The large hot water tank allows for numerous showers and more than two baths.

Continue up to the top floor and find another bright bedroom with comfortable double bed, and chest of drawers.

Each room has individual heaters and there is a large, lawned, private, south facing garden with wooden deck and table, chairs and umbrella, which can be reached by continuing along the path to the side of the house.

The property is maintained by a local English speaking housekeeper who is available to change linen and clean the property after 7 days, if requested, at an additional charge. Linen is charged at 10 Euros per person.

Please note that the Fete de Village takes place 22-25 August 2014. This is not a peaceful time to be in the village, although there is plenty of atmosphere, as music will be late into the night on at least one of the nights.

The Midi-Pyrenees region

Wild and beautiful the Ariège is often referred to as France's best kept secret. Situated in South-Western France it is the most untouched and magnificent part of the French Pyrenees and is home to a vast population of plant, insect, bird and animal life. The possibilities to dive into the natural environment are endless, from river and lake swimming, to walks for all levels of fitness, (including the Chemin de la Liberté, the pilgrims route to Santiago Di Compostela and the well know GR routes) to horseback riding, canoeing, painting ....

With the wealth of historic, archaeological and cultural interest found in the Ariège it's so easy to feel transported to another age long ago. Prehistoric man left his mark in various grottos and caves, including Niaux and Le Maz D'Azil. Fantastic medieval settlements include Carcassonne, St Lizier and Mirepoix. There is a legacy of religious history seen in the cathedrals and churches throughout the area, not to forget the story left by the Cathar people, with castles including Monsegur open for viewing.

Various picturesque ski resorts can be reached within 70 minutes, including Ax Bonascre (55km) and Guzet Neige and the higher resorts found in Andorra are easily accessible (90mins). For winter holidays it is not unknown to be able to play golf in the morning in beautiful sunshine and ski in the afternoon. Fabulous!

Stages 8 and 9 of the Tour de France will be passing close by this year on the 6 and 7 July, 2013.

Barcelona is only 3 hrs away by car and the Mediteranean coast can be reached in 2.5 hours. Toulouse International is the most convenient airport and is 1.5 hours away. Carcassone airport is 1.5 hours away. Perpignan airport is 2.5 hours drive. The drive from Calais is 12 hours approx.

La Bastide de Serou

The trout river, which runs through the village, is just 150m from the house. Situated in the midst of the Séronais National Park, our house lies between Foix and St Girons, conveniently placed close to some of the most spectacular views of the Pyrenees and to many of the attractions mentioned above. The house is situated in the centre of Durban-sur-Arize which has a population of 105. The nearest shops are in the larger village of La Bastide de Serou, 7 minutes drive away.

Within a radius of 30 minutes there is:

Foix, with its magnificent castle and various museums; St Lizier, a UNESCO site and host to a multitude of fabulous classical concerts which take place in its cathedral, St Girons with one of France's most colourful, vibrant markets; a challenging and beautiful golf course; Le Maz D'Azil with its impressive grotto and buzzing market; Labouiche, Europe's longest underground river trip; Le Merens Equestrian centre; the cycle path that runs between Foix and St Girons, which can be accessed 3 km from the front door; rivers and lakes to swim, many walks to explore .......... the list is endless.

Le Golf de l'Ariège, only 20 minutes away, is a championship 18 hole golf course with magnificent views of the Pyrenees. It also has a fabulous compact 9 hole course for a more leisurely round, a driving range, putting green, club house and restaurant.

Castelnau Durban, is as far as you need to go to enjoy the traditional French ambiance, sitting under the plane trees watching the petanque matches being fought out by all ages. Here you will also find two bars, an excellent traditional restaurant, Chez Victor, busy with local people, a small Tuesday market, a tiny post office, an antique tennis court and a rather comic local shop.

Just 3 km from the old railway line cycle path, which runs between Foix and St Girons, with horses nearby, and so much on its doorstep, nestled in beautiful walking countryside, this is the perfect location from which to explore by foot, horseback, bike or car.

"A totally relaxing stay in a fantastic setting"

We stayed here during December for a break over the New Year period. What a great choice we made! This is a great house; old and traditional, yet with all modern amenities. We loved the roaring log fire and the whole ambience of the lounge during the wintry evenings. The setting in the village is simply perfect and the entire break provided the relaxation that we sought.
Location was excellent - just an hours drive to the most beautiful mountain scenery and some good skiing. An hour in the other direction to the coast for total variety. We ventured into Toulouse for the day which was an easy drive from this house and provided some excellent shopping and a wonderful farmer's market.
I would highly recommend this property and will definitely be returning for future trips.

"The perfect Getaway"

We enjoyed a fantastic week. The property is so light and the Rooms were much larger than we expected.
We were surrounded by beautiful scenery and found the location ideal for exploring the local villages and other places of interest.
We enjoyed buying the home grown produce direct from the farmers.
Will definitely be going back!
